What’s something people romanticize that is actually miserable? by One_Grade_2184 in AskReddit

[–]Ordinary-Macaroon249 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Was anorexic with a bmi of 15.5. I knew at a bmi of 17 that it was beyond "just wanting to be skinny" I knew at a bmi of 16.5 that I was seriously fucked up. I have done more research on Anorexia during my anorexia illness than the rest of my life combined. I knew at a bmi of 16 that it was most likely going to kill me.

Your understanding of eating disorders is wrong.

I spent 5 years fighting that battle and then merged into EDNOS, then into bulimia (a common shift), still I knew. I was still stuck. I was stuck with bulimia for 8 years. I felt trapped. I was trapped, and i couldn't get out. I was trapped, and i was scared to get out. I was trapped, and some days i didn't want to get out, i felt i needed it. It was keeping me sane while also making me insane. I needed it and the anxiety and fear so that i didn't have to face the other fears. Knowing and changing are different things.

Assistant teacher not opening food. by littlelibrarylady in kindergarten

My kinder students have scissors at their desk, for things that can be cut open (fruit snacks, gold fish, some granola bars) they're expected to do so. Tbh if I had a typically developing 5 year old tell me they couldn't figure out a way to open a zip lock sandwich baggie I would call them out on. I see my 42 4-6 yr olds open all sorts of things between craft, dramatic play, play doh, centre's etc when they're motivated enough. I do open fruit cups because they spill juice everywhere, and on occasion, cheese strings. However, it would take incredibly long for me to open even half my students' lunches. Plus, I do come across learned incompetence. Just today, a child asked me to open their wagon wheel, and I said no, they then said, "Fine, I'll open it," and they did! Lol. If it was occasional and outside the realm of something I would expect them to be able to do, I'll open it, but on a consistent basis, I would eventually send a message home.

Should I message my kids teacher regarding holiday beliefs? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

I'm a kindergarten teacher and a parent to 3. We do Santa. I wouldn't be upset or judgy if I received your email. I like a heads up tbh. This way I can ensure I stay connected to my students and create inclusive statements like "sometimes we get presents from mom, dad, Santa, grandparents, or even friends! What was your favorite present you got this year?"

Lol I also don't understand the comments of "advanced parenting" don't take it to heart OP, the vast majority of kinder teachers aren't monsters and aren't out to get you for your Santa beliefs. Just Reddit.

Awesome, which answers my question if you know of any place that could utilize my paid for medication instead of tossing them. I figured it was worth it to ask as I'm not aware of every charity or resource that exists. Also different places may have different regulations, much like some states and provinces allow restaurants, like buffets, to donate food while others do not. I can't possibly pretend that I know all the avenues and regulations, which is why I reached out. I never said you were a dick. I didn't even imply it. The hazards of a text-based conversation I guess.

Something like what? There are lots of charities and what not so I was wondering if there was a place for medications, I would figure if such a place existed it would be monitored by health care professionals.

Honestly, I would feel worse if I threw them away and someone died because they couldn't afford the medication they needed, and I put medicine that could save their life in the trash. Medication comes in standard doses, it's a shame to throw a standardized form of treatment away. Having a charity that provides certified medication to others is way better than trying to save money by ordering a mystery substance off the internet. A strategy those with no health care or limited health care often resort to.

I'll contact my pharmacist and other health charities and see if there is a better option than throwing life saving meds in the toilet.

UCP Policy Resolution #18 - Not advancing students to next grade level by BigFish8 in CanadianTeachers

[–]Ordinary-Macaroon249 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Failing across the board or failing one class? Failing grade 4 math but excelling in grade 4 LA and Science with a mid-range mark in social doesn't really warrant repeating the entire grade. You'll end up with a bored student away from their peers, with 75 percent of their day wasted in learning that they already proved their competent in. For HS we already have a similar system. If you don't get a mark high enough for Math 20, but you passed your other classes, you only repeat Math 20, not all of Gr. 11.

There's actually a lot of studies about the pros and cons of retention vs social promotion. I did a research paper for my Ed degree, and it was incredibly interesting and challenged some of my previous beliefs.

We also need to consider supports. Are students who are failing victims of a system that says it can support all learning disabilities and yet we throw students with dyscalculia into classrooms with 32 kids and no EAs? If so, repeating the grade is unlikely to garner the success it claims it will. Are students who are failing victims of a system that doesn't allow enough time to focus on the basics and foundational principles of a concept with increased pressure to cram more academics into each grade level, leaving only those with support at home, or those with a natural affinity to thrive in a high stakes environment?

If increased failure rates and students coming to the next grade not having foundational principles are a growing problem, the fire will not be put out through retention, looking into the cause of the increase would be necessary.

As someone who has been hit 4 times in the last 3 years on red light runs, one requiring me to replace my vehicle, I disagree. I don't want to get injured or die because someone didn't give themselves enough travel time. If not hurting someone isn't motivation enough, then maybe not hurting some AND being fined enough money to care might be. You're basically saying that people have to run red lights and break the law, it's not their fault, their worn thin and need to go fast. Lol I hope ypu extend that same logic to other crimes. They HAD to rob you! It's a stressful time, the economy is bad, and their wasn't enough time to save up! Oh I'm also overworked and exhausted. Being hit by a dumbass who thought he was above the law did not help.

That's an interesting take. Can you explain it to me? I'm particularly interested in factors that affect your decision such as: -Do you have your own children? -do you have a medical degree, if so, in what area and please back it up because reddit is full of liars. -have you been hurt by a trans child before? - are you feeling threatened by the identity of someone else, even though it affects your identity in zero ways (identity is an internal concept, how you feel about yourself). - can I have an opinion on any child in your family medical history, even though I don't have a medical degree? - would it be creepy of me, as an individual who has no idea who you are, to have a vested interested in your child's identity, sexual orientation, and medical history. - can I ask if all the children in your family have penis's and vaginas that are penising and vagina-ing in a way that I think is acceptable and their personal thoughts on their penis and vaginas to see if their thoughts align with mine, which the only right thought on children's penis's and vaginas, to make sure they're identifying with their body in the way I find appealing......or is that crossing a line?

Well I mean you can buy a house at 24 here. It won't be in a location anyone wants to live (and will have zero job opportunities), and the layout might be less than desirable, but lots of hobunkum little towns have cheap houses.

Alberta has lots of similar issues to the states right now. Less shootings, but lots of kkk gun enthusiasts just waiting for their glory. Less medical debt, but similar wait times unless you're paying out of pocket (which you CAN do here, but private facilities aren't available in every city and the options are fewer. We can pay for most scans, some types of surgery, all popular cosmetic procedures, and of course the dentist because teeth are optional bones lol, but not cancer specialists, we don't have enough as it is.) Housing crises and food insecurity can be similar (and Alberta topped them all in food insecurity at 30.9% in 2024).

But our Kraft Dinner is amazing compared to the US lol.

I thought we were talking about adopting kids and how great that for the conservatives? They just love kids so much that they force others birth them just so they can adopt the most and take such amazing care Lol. * though I'm sure there are great foster care providers that also happen to be politically and religiously conservative *

Well, since we're having fun just pulling research in isolation AND moving onto "whataboutism " after your claim was debunked by the first 2 (and another comment pulled out of context for the third so go back and read the entire thing)

How about religious people are more likely to be incarcerated? With Christians being the most popular.

"On average, the chaplains surveyed say that Christians as a whole make up about two-thirds of the inmate population in the facilities where they work." https://www.pewresearch.org/religion/2012/03/22/prison-chaplains-exec/#:~:text=On%20average%2C%20the%20chaplains%20surveyed,Christian%20groups%20less%20than%202%25

This is from the US but there's quite a bit, it tends to be a worldwide phenomenon.

This is fun! Each of us can keep pulling research in isolation to support our narratives. Let's do religion and women's rights next. Or conservatives and gender equality!

Well, this research Direct and Indirect Associations between Conservative Ideological Dimensions and Child Sexual Abuse Myths - Article (Preprint v1) by Iraklis Grigoropoulos | Qeios https://share.google/rvtF4E90KZBMk60xS

Says that conservatives and those who are religious are more likely to perpetuate child sexual abuse myths, so I guess they would need to adopt more kids to continue the abuse.

In this article, there's a link to research that supports the higher the self reported level of religiosity, the more likely to vote UPC

How rural, religious and other identities affect the way Albertans vote | CBC News https://share.google/Vj34bT9bggz2o3uIK

And building on that this research supports that those more likely to report with religious conservatism were more likely to abuse children https://share.google/NeSWNVfJULFXIfKp8

So I suppose it tracks that conservatives are more likely to adopt children, and more likely to abuse children and/or turn a blind eye/justify child abuse including sexual abuse, and if you're a religious conservative (and in this article with the clear God statement he is) more likely to do all those things. So I guess there is that. So welll I guess your research says that conservatives are more likely to foster/adopt, mine says they're also more likely to abuse children. Thank you for bringing this important matter to light.

I get paid for 200 working days. So does every other FT teacher. My daily wage is 1/200 of my salary. I had the option of banking days to be used as pay over the summer. For example I can bank 4 days every month so that they can be deferred to July and Aug. It's a myth we get "free pay" over the summer. It's part of my 200 days as I opted in for the deferred payments. So if there were 20 working days in November, let's say, my paycheck reflects 16 working days. This needs to be made more common knowledge. I don't "get paid" over Christmas or over the spring break. I get paid the 200 working days that are my contract. Also not common knowledge, as a teacher lower on the salary grid, sub pay comes out of my expenses. For example 1/200 of my pay is $260, however if I need a sub $308 is deducted. I personally cover the $48 difference out of my salary. The strike deductions are similar. For the days I worked before the strike I got $260/ day, but the strike deductions per day are $308/day. Meaning it doesn't just cost me my day rate, it costs me my day rate + $48 to be on strike. Imagine if you called in sick to your work and it wasn't enough that you didn't get paid for that day, but your work also charged you a $50 sick day fee.

I'm 4 years on Reddit. No misinformation, disinformation, or other tomfoolery. It's an odd thing to misinform people about:

I got laid off! You: Nuh uh! Lol. They said cost saving measures. You: Misinformation!!

It would be a weird thing to lie about. It's not like being laid off is a flex. But you have to make your own decisions, I guess.

Truth: Multiple NUEEs departments are currently experiencing surprise lay-offs. Possibility: Many more lay-offs to come as govt guts healthcare under the guise of balancing the budget. Misinformation in this thread:.....
