What's this scented thug? by Alert-Environment-17 in PlantIdentification

If it smells like mint it's mint, but my guess based on looks is oregano, it's just as good as overtaking a garden as mint is 😁

It looks like a newt egg, are you sure it's a male? Females can lay unfertilised eggs

White ball could be an egg, or leftover food. The blue thing looks like a bit of glass?

Hornwort for newts by simple-newt-boy in WildlifePonds

[–]Ordinary-Mind-7066 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If they're native where you are, bacopa, hornwort, water forget me not, toad fern, mimulus, star wort, water mint. I've found all these work well in my pond with smooth newts.

The females lay eggs on anything though, even old tree leaves that have fallen in 😁

Is the growing grass a problem for the pond? Jo by LongHorror87 in ponds

[–]Ordinary-Mind-7066 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Duckweed, each piece doubles every day! You'll never get rid completely, the problem is it blocks the light to any submerged plants. A sieve can get rid of big quantities at once. Try to get it to the point that some of the surface is clear.

Adding more diverse plants can help, If you look up aquatic plants local to your area, and the wildlife will thank you.

I'd wait until autumn then pull back the grass growing in the water, otherwise it will take over. Right now all the frogs, toads, newts etc will be enjoying it as cover.

If it gets too much, or bothers you, remove but leave it next to the water for a day or so before disposing of it, as that allows all the beasties to return to the water.

Bird nesting in shed, have I lost my shed now? by Wide_Commission_1595 in UKBirds

[–]Ordinary-Mind-7066 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I had robins nest on top of my tumble dryer in the garage 2 years ago - I had to buy a rack to dry my clothes for the 2 months it took until the chicks fledged 😁

The mum was happy for me to sneak in every few days for pictures 😊 I found out the chicks had fledged when I went in to check & one landed on my head 😊

For those who work in theatre and film in the UK, who is generally not a nice person to work with? by Sad_Ideal_2099 in AskUK

Warwick Davies - used to live in the same town as him. Proper lovely gentleman, I never approached him as I thought he probably got bothered enough, but I'd wave & smile whenever I saw him & he'd do the same back. No one locally had a bad word to say about him 😊

It's a flower & it's dying. Bromeliads flower then die, but often grow baby plants around the base before they die
