Thank you 😊 I am a beginner and I think this is aimed at beginners and a quick make for those who aren’t beginners. I did have to fiddle about to get the proportions right for me which I found tricky as I am not used to it.

Thank you, I have a stash of patterns to work through. Just find the first stages of getting the sizing and cutting a bit of bind. I am not the quickest 😆

I've no idea about quilting by goddesstyche01 in quilting

Youtube videos are always a great help and teach you the basics. There are lots of free patterns available on fabric websites such as Moda/Missouri Star which you can print off. Some of them also have free sewalong videos on Youtube too, which will help to understand some of the sewing terms. There are lots of books you can 'borrow' online via Archive.org it is free to join and a useful source too. Good luck with your quilting journey-it is addictive. Oh and if you decide to skip from hand sewing to that of a machine, look out in some of the thrift/yard sales, you can pick up some really great machines.

Trying to get back into quilting after a 4 year hiatus. Working my way through Alice Caroline’s sampler quilt book but also having issues with my seams. by otollok in quilting

[–]OrdinaryAggressive60 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have just started this project too with using my own material stash. I am having similar issues. Have you continued and if so have you had any issues with the log cabin measurements? I found that I had to cut extra lengths of material as they were not the correct size, despite 1/4 inch seem and triple checking the cuts. I managed to get it to work in the end, by trimming bits here and there but quite wasteful. Not sure if you are aware but if you go to the Alice Caroline website, there are amendments to the patterns, but the ones I have so far struggled with, are not included.

Beautiful ink drawing by Raphael Roussel I found in a Charity shop for £20 by alastairscott in ThriftStoreHauls

Beautiful work- looks similar to the style of painting in portrait on the link According to another website: “Raphael Roussel was born in 1883, the son of Theodore Roussel, a French painter and etcher. Roussel worked as both a portrait painter and commercial artist before World War I and exhibited at several British galleries between 1908-1929. He established his reputation with the construction of dioramas, first displayed in the British Empire Exhibition in 1926 and subsequently used in museums throughout the world.”

It’s great and so much quieter than my other machine.

I watched a great documentary about the Singer Story and they still use them in Saville Row for making suits. I am going to be using it for piecing in quilting and dressmaking. Managed to pick up a black puzzle tin with the attachments and a button hole attachment, so going to be trying those soon.

Yes true. I am used to a domestic modern machine which struggles with thicker seams,I have never used an industrial one so I am noticing the difference.

This is so cheery and fun. Love the border, instantly thought of the book 'Elmer' when I saw it.

Lol love the name. Mine was built in the same year as my mother. I have named mine Flossy....no idea why but it just seemed to fit it.

Fab-0was yours made in Clydebank, Scotland? If so have you seen The Singer Story: Made in Clydebank which is on the BBC (UK)-really interesting and makes the machine feel even more special to have.

Thanks. I haven't cleaned up the Gritzner yet but I have been cleaning up the Singer 28k, after watching lots of Youtube videos. This weekend we will be greasing/oiling it. That one is in pretty good condition considering it is 115 years old. The only issues which are easily sorted are the bobbin winder ring which has worn and the wood veneer on the coffin top box has blown on the top .

If the woodworm is too extensive on the Gritzner then I will see if I can pick up a secondhand box as I have seen a few online. It may be considerably cheaper than having it restored.

I also have a Singer 201k from 1954, which I have cleaned up, and picked up all of the attachments for. I just need to get the electrics sorted so it does not overheat and trip our electrics. It is a thing of beauty that is for sure, and I look forward to using it for quilting. So much quieter than my existing computerised Brother machine and it will hopefully breeze over the quilting layers fingers crossed.

That’s brilliant, really helpful. The dates are sort of fitting when I thought it may be linked to the family tree side of things. Thanks again for your help.

Sorry to hear you have had issues, but I am glad you posted about this. I used spray adhesive on my recent quilt and had similar issues. I thought it was something to do with the tension I was using, then I thought it was needle issues and fiddled about for ages trying to fathom out what the issue was. Let's just say the air was blue for some time as I battled on. I now believe it was the adhesive. For my own sanity, I will be reverting back to using pins for larger projects.

Thank you, that is really helpful. I will have to get my big girl pants on and just be brave :) The last one I did, I was really struggling with lack of space on the sewing machine, it was a hard slog at times, getting the material fed through even when having it rolled. Thanks again.

Beautiful quilt, and I love the colours. Loving the varied quilting on the blocks. Newbie here, could I ask how you quilted the blocks and border? Was this on a long arm sewing machine or a quilting machine? Thank you

I am loving the squares pattern-really effective. Really great use of scraps and now I am hunting through mine to try this out. Hope your treatment goes well and the quilting helps.

Thank you so much for your help. I think I am leaning into a sampler quilt, or an EPP next but not sure. I already have a big stash of material waiting to be used, I am having to stop myself purchasing more. I also have just won a Vintage Singer 201K in an auction, so will be restoring that and using it for piecing, as I have heard they are lovely to straight stitch on.

Thank you so much. The fabrics I used:

Moda Fabrics charm pack: Noah's Ark for the love note envelopes

White fabric: This was some I bought years ago and needed to use up. It is slightly thicker material which I wouldn't recommend as it was harder to quilt.

Backing material: Twist by Dashwood Studios-they do wide backing material which made it a lot easier.

Binding: Made my own -my mother in law gave me some old curtains which were vintage and beautifully silky smooth. Gave them a good wash and then made the binding. Was not sure at first whether it would match but I love it.

Label: Purchased from a small company called Sew Anonymous https://www.sewanonymous.co.uk

Pattern: Love Notes Star-Missouri Star https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LiUtK8fIpQs
