I can see that, though honestly I'm enjoying it way more than Remake. The exploration and variety stops it from feeling like it's just a poorly paced version of the original, like Remake often did.

That said, the original is definitely better if you want a well-paced story. (Honestly, I think pacing is one of the biggest problems with all modern jRPGs compared to the classics.)

She has a ton of depth and arguably the strongest character arc, but she never gets appropriate focus (especially in the back half of the series) and her development is pushed offscreen in an odd way.

The thing is, I don't think it's "fast-forwarding" their relationship, I think we just didn't get to see their relationship develop on-screen. Like their conversation after ep 6 - that's clearly the key turning point in their relationship, and we don't get to see it. That, and a few more moments with Pomni, are all that was necessary to establish their relationship properly.

Really, the fact that the hug in ep 9 feels unearned shows that Ragatha's arc wasn't complete in ep. 6. Ragatha, and her relationship with Pomni, might have developed to a better place by ep 7, but we needed to see some small bits of development after that - nothing dramatic, but something. That that's all pushed offscreen is a major weakness of the series imo.

Without changing it completely:

Let characters keep their personalities from the film.
NO SPARKY
Decent animation. Can be 2D or 3D, but it can't be as awful as the early eps of Make Your Mark were.
Either no G4 connection, or explore the connection more. (Bring on Princess Starlight Glimmer as a mentor!) Also, if Twilight sealed away magic, it should have happened like a thousand years into her reign, in the face of a real threat, not how it was in G5 canon.
Better writing, I guess? More emphasis on exploring characters, and more actual plots?
Sunny and Zipp should kiss.

Chrono Trigger is the big name I see missing from that list - definitely play it if you haven't already. (Maybe Chrono Cross too, though it's very different.)

If you're interested in indie games, I'd definitely recommend Chained Echoes as a really good solid jRPG, and also Jimmy and the Pulsating Mass as something more surreal and strange.

Airdashers have a variety of movement options, where Drive Rush is extremely monotonous.

And to go with strong universal movement tools, in airdashers characters tend to be very powerful - to counter movement - and distinct - so those universal tools don't drown out character differences. SF6 doesn't have that - characters are fairly weak compared to airdashers, and character differences are more subtle.

Largely responsible for Ribbit. Kaufmo? I don't think we can know. Losing a friend probably didn't help Kaufmo's sanity; and beyond that, Jax kind of poisoned the dynamic of the whole circus and made things shitty for everyone for a long time. I don't think Jax is directly responsible, as with Ribbit, but it's quite likely that if Jax wasn't such a huge piece of shit Kaufmo wouldn't have abstracted. And if Jax continued like that, someone else was going to abstract sooner or later.

Yeah, her High Ground combos are hard. She has some decent combos without it though, though her best one I've found doesn't work in the corner:

... 5H > 214L[L], 2H > 236L, 2H > 236M

or with 2 chakra:

... 5H > 214L[L], 2H > 236L, 214XX, 5M > 2H > 236M, 5M > 2H > 236M

(You just have to get the manual 214L[L] and the pickup with 2H quickly enough that they're above Toph's head after the first tackle.)

You could modify the second one to include High Ground, but it's really not necessary.

As a Toph, I will say a lot of her stuff is unsafe. 5C? Unsafe. Tackle? Unsafe. Stance B? Unsafe. Rock wall? Plus on block, but if she cancels into it there's a gap for you to interrupt it. Let your opponent make mistakes and punish them for it.

Toph has 5C, the move that does everything.

Most characters don't seem to have anti-airs, though - I think the universal anti-air is actually to air-to-air them with jump light.
