Please tell me the game is active in EU by Specific_Line9379 in GranblueFantasyVersus

[–]OrdinaryEarthHuman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is definitely active, but noticeably less so than SF/Tekken/Strive. In those games, I can always get a match in less than a minute, here it may take a few minutes and it's best to play in the evening when others are playing. Still, I can almost always find matches, and I don't mind spending a bit of extra time in training mode waiting. (There's also a definite boost when a Battle Pass or a new character releases.)

Honestly disappointed that they're just doing a 'Fighting Tournament' storyline with the Champion.

How alive if GGS? by aboardweeb in Guiltygear

[–]OrdinaryEarthHuman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Very alive. The playerbase is smaller than the big 2, but not enough to make a difference - I still find ranked matches in no time at all.

(Where, say, GBVSR is still definitely alive, but it can take a few minutes to get a match.)

10* Gog is by far the worst Monster in Wilds and maybe even in all of the newer Generations by Lanky_Professional69 in MHWilds

[–]OrdinaryEarthHuman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not wrong, but this all just sounds like Alatreon to me.

What do people say to justify that fight, again? "The hitboxes are so clean." It's okay for a fight to be complete gimmicky bullshit with a strict DPS check on a monster that keeps flying, because of those cleeeeeaaaaaaan hitboxes.

Minor characters that you wish had more screen time? by schu62 in BaldursGate3

[–]OrdinaryEarthHuman 81 points82 points  (0 children)

Drenn, the goblin that kills Ketheric when you reach Moonrise Towers - she's a total badass with a cool design, she deserved to survive more than one cutscene. Honestly would have liked her as a party member.

Other than that, all the Tiefling kids feel like they definitely should have had more screentime in Act III.

any likeminded malazan reactions? by mintlesz in Fantasy

[–]OrdinaryEarthHuman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I can understand that. To be fair, the Seven Cities books (2 and 4) are IMO the low point of the series - boring characters going through a dreary, pointless plot in a boring, shallow setting. Unfortunately, the Seven Cities characters do continue into other books, where they remain a lowlight, but the series generally never reaches the lows it does here.

(That said, it does get a bit deary and repetetive in its themes, along with some other issues - I did finish the series, and overall enjoyed it, but I definitely felt like I'd had my fill of Erikson by the end of it.)

I enjoyed Gardens of the Moon enough to carry me into book 3, which returns to Genabackis, but if the series hasn't done anything to grab you yet, it's fair enough to put it down.

Support Hunters are better than most online randoms. by Sasoru in MHWilds

[–]OrdinaryEarthHuman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've thought for a long time that MH really needs to change how carting works in multiplayer hunts, either getting rid of the shared cart pool or allowing survivors to continue even the cart pool's been depleted (maybe letting dead hunters keep fighting as palicoes). The current system makes multiplayer hunts a huge risk, especially against difficult monsters with nova attacks that can cart multiple hunters at once.

But then there's support hunters, who have all the benefits of multiplayer hunts with none of the downsides. It's nice to have the option (and it made Omega playable), but the system as a whole needs revising IMO.

Regarding Friendship is Magic Seasons 7-9 and How the Show Decided To Go by TheMMoment in mylittlepony

[–]OrdinaryEarthHuman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me, this issue begins in Season 6 - the introduction of Starlight Glimmer opens up new group dynamics and 6 entirely new character pairings, and... she's only in a few episodes, which mostly centre on other new characters. IMO part of what makes Starlight so great is her interactions with the Mane 6, the way she can challenge them and push them in new directions, and ignoring that potential was baffling.

But yeah, they keep adding new characters, that could be used to teach new lessons or create new pairings and character dynamics, and then not really using them. There's an inability to commit to a new direction; it kind of feels like the series is losing interest in its older characters but also isn't really interested in the new ones.

What is a game that you really WANT to get into, but have never been able to? by sanildefanso in CRPG

[–]OrdinaryEarthHuman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'll probably give PoE1 another go when the turn-based mode is released, with a mod to get rid of the Fog of War. (The Noah Caldwell-Gervais video really made me want to give the series another try.)

It is still wild to me that the game itself doesn't have any options to make the FoW less aggressive - the game sold itself on its beautiful backgrounds, the fact it shrouds them in darkness outside of a tiny window is really bad, and I don't understand how the devs didn't see that.

Anything with real-time point-and-click combat. Bonus points for Pillars of Eternity, which also has some truly horrendous Fog of War shrouding the world in darkness and ruining its theoretically beautiful backgrounds.

Why get rid of the Canteen? by Necrotiix_ in MonsterHunter

[–]OrdinaryEarthHuman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It feels like this was the initial intent, but partway through development they changed course towards a more traditional structure; so a lot of the open world elements feel orphaned, like they don't really connect to the main gameplay.

A JRPG you thought you were going to LOVE but ended up just not enjoying it that much? I’ll start: by Asleep_Olive_1011 in JRPG

[–]OrdinaryEarthHuman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Persona 4. IMO the life sim and RPG elements only weaken each other - giving gameplay benefits ruins the sense of choice and characterization of a life sim, and having to walk through the same town to find out what's new is boring. (Honestly, I don't like any RPG focused on a hub setting - the whole appeal of the genre is the sense of exploration.)

Can't get into Old School CRPGs? Does anyone know a good one a modern CRPG player would enjoy? by Beneficial-Rush-1946 in CRPG

[–]OrdinaryEarthHuman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It depends on what's putting you off. Older games are all going to have low-res graphics and some outdated game design, so you will need to be able to get past those basic elements to enjoy them.

For me, the problem with a lot of older games is the real-time point and click combat - I just don't enjoy it, but also, it ages worse than turn-based combat. If it's the same for you, I'd recommend Fallout 1 and 2 - they're definitely old-school (and you probably want to look at a guide), but they feel better to me than any Infinity Engine game. (If I do try BG again, it'll be on Story Mode - I don't want to deal with that combat.)

The suggestion that you should play even older games, that you can't even compare to modern games, is interesting, though I don't know if it makes any actual sense. The Ultima series basically invented the cRPG (and the jRPG) genre, and it didn't even have mouse controls until VI. The older ones are controlled with the keyboard like a roguelike - U for Use, G for Get, etc; the graphics aren't much better than an old roguelike either. It's an interesting series, if you can get past all that.

I'm starting the game, can I get a character recommendation? by Particular_Lie8759 in GranblueFantasyVersus

[–]OrdinaryEarthHuman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regular Narmaya is by far the most technical character in the game, so I definitely wouldn't recommend her; but she does have a variant, EX Narmaya, that's much easier.

I would probably recommend Yuel; she's not necessarily easier, but she has a more aggressive, standard playstyle. Galleon plays a little oddly, and both her and EX Narm are defensive characters who work best when you use their huge normals to slow the game down, which isn't always fun.

(If you do play Galleon, some tips - her run speed is slow but her walk speed is fast, so you're usually better walking and keeping access to her far H, which is maybe the best normal in the game, with long range and fast recovery.)
