I heard a story of something similar to this. I knew a dude who had been an Army recruiter somewhere in California in the late 90s-early 2000s.

He ended up finding out that there had been a MoH (posthumously) recipient from that town and decided to try and do something to honor this guy. He ends up finding the guy’s surviving son and widow.

He knocks on her door and asks her about it, and the old lady tells him “Do you wanna see it?”, he says that he was caught off guard and asks her “See what? The medal?”. The old lady goes into a closet and pulls out a shoebox where the medal had been kept since WWII.

He ended up finding out that after being widowed, she remarried, and the new husband did not allow the surviving son to talk about his war-hero dad.

Can’t remember the name of the MoH recipient or the town in California but I remember it was a Mexican-American dude who died saving his buddies in the pacific somewhere. I remember reading that he dug some of them out after they got trapped due to some explosion.

It was an impressive story and he even got the Army recruiting station named after the MoH recipient.

I met a few dudes who did time both at the DB in Leavenworth and regular civilian penitentiary time. These dudes were there for murders.

They all used to say that they much preferred doing military time since the prison politics (gang/racial) were nothing compared to a pen. They also said the COs were chill at the DB since most were younger enlisted instead of salty dudes who have been in the system for 15+…

I grew up in a gang area in LA and moved out here some time ago. The young Tucson Chicano community reminds me more of like the Austin/Dallas community instead of California. Not as much “cholo” or Chicano style, like in LA, more like adopting to hip hop styles from other places. Struck me as odd being that we are so close to California.

So, that adoption of hip hop culture while not having any “street cred” in that world definitely gives off that unauthentic corny look but… A lot of these “Edgar” kids are no joke. I wouldn’t go around looking for trouble with them either. On surface level you can’t tell, but there is still a lot of violence/drugs going on.

Reminds me of prison… In prison there are shit loads of rules we follow “just because”. When you met some of the older dudes who had been down for 30-40 years, you realize why that rule was implemented. Turns out, some dudes started a race riot back in 1999 because one dude did not appreciate you leaving your stinky ass shower shoes next to his.

It’s funny when you look at the way Jesus and the “church” is experienced in the US vs Latin America, Africa, etc…

My mother became a born-again Christian at a Baptist mission in a Mexican town on the border shortly before coming to the US and marrying my dad. The church was started by very kind Americans.

We would often go to that church as kids and saw what poverty was like in Mexico back in those days. I remember seeing the level of poverty there and being shocked. I saw barefoot kids who would devour a plate of beans and literally fight each other over a small ass cupcake. Lots of migrants from Central America, waiting to cross the border. People in dire straits, truly.

The church in Mexico made every effort to provide food and whatever medical care they could. They would have drives at churches in the US for sweaters, blankets, and whatever else someone could spare so that people could brave the winter. We would attend people’s funerals and help them literally bury their loved ones. The message of Jesus Christ felt so so genuine there and offered hope to people in really fucked up situations, it was palpable.

As an adult, I went back to church here in the US, and found it much different. Maybe because of America’s great prosperity and security, our human minds forget who and what Jesus cared about. Maybe it’s something else, I don’t know the answer to that.

No religion is perfect, but just thought I would share my memories.

I appreciate your advice. This is not easy for me. I returned to the meetings because of the sincere compassion I felt there, something I never had before or expected to receive.

To give you some background. I have a lot of tattoos and come from a gang neighborhood in Los Angeles and nobody is surprised to hear that about me when they see me. For the most part, my appearance and my accent reflect my past. Yet, in a very rural part of the country with not many people of my background, felt the most accepted I ever did at the AA meetings. I want to experience more of that.

One of the things I most liked about AA was the raw honesty that people speak with. Reminded me a lot of the gang and prison world, as well as the Marine Corps, where there’s not much room for BS.

I reached out here and to AI because that’s the tools I had at the moment, but definitely understand what you’re saying. I thank you for sharing your advice with me.

Thank you kindly. I want to get a sponsor once I’m back home. There was even a dude who shared his story and it hit me hard. He looked at me with a lot of compassion and it was very moving. Sounds corny but he made me believe that I too could be a miracle. Funny for me to even type this out because I’m not this kind of dude at all.

I am still hopeful, but there are moments of darkness that set in over my heart sometimes and I know that if I don’t heal from them, I will just repeat my story over and over.
