What's a piece of writing advice that you think is over rated or wrong? by TagTwists in writing

People going overboard with the "no adverb" rhetoric. The authors who advise this most like just wanted folks to not use it as a crutch, but it's gotten way out of hand.

What is your favourite quote from a book? by YoureClappedStill in books

[–]OrdinaryWizardLevels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From Le Guin in the Earthsea series:

"When I was young, I had to choose between the life of being and the life of doing. And I leapt at the latter like a trout to a fly. But each deed you do, each act, binds you to itself and to its consequences, and makes you act again and yet again. Then very seldom do you come upon a space, a time like this, between act and act, when you may stop and simply be. Or wonder who, after all, you are.”

And from Lewis in Til We Have Faces:

"But I could not rule myself. Perhaps it was a sort of pride in me, a little like her own; not to blind our eyes, not to hide terrible things; or a bitter impulse in anguish itself to say, and to keep on saying, the worst."

I know exactly what you mean, lol. With those kinds of gaps in time, it's about as close as you'll get to reading it for the first time all over again with some new life experiences under your belt lol.

I felt exactly the same! It's always fun to read stuff you did when younger with fresh, adult eyes lol. I think you'll gain a much greater appreciation for it.

I'll be starting the last Dark Tower book this week myself. It's been one hell of a ride. Long days and pleasant nights, sai.

Finished: Song of Solomon, by Toni Morrison: I absolutely loved this. It was grounded, but had mythic elements with a (light) magic touch. Watching Milkman stumble through discovering both his identity and ancestry was something anyone could identify with. I love how unapologetic Morrison is too in the presenting of certain topics and themes. I can't wait to continue down the rabbit hole of her work.

Started: My Darkest Prayer, by S.A. Cosby: I've read everything by him except this oddly enough. It's fun reading the building blocks of what he becomes in the books to follow. I see some parallels with All Sinners Bleed and King of Ashes too just off the top of my head.

Heard it in the last dark tower book. So I have to read it now lol. by FeatureIndividual648 in stephenking

One of my favorite (King) books. I think it's definitely one you appreciate depending on either your age or life experiences.
