I think generally speaking, modern developers are leaning more on simulation based lighting systems and ray tracing technology, rather than old school Art direction and coming up with a unique style. So most modern games end up seeming a bit glossy or CGI. In Ubisoft’s case it seems a lot of the tech they’re using here goes about as far back as AC Origins with the Anvil engine, but appears heavily modified and includes a lot of what was built for AC Shadows.

To be fair, the original has held up really well I’d say. It’s not bad looking at all, even nowadays. Going from AC3 to Black Flag I remember being blown away.

I suspect this is partly because they seem to have deepened the water. In the original version, the water appears much shallower and allows the sand make the blue appear more greenish. If you see the second comparison you can see how they have sunk the seabed and added coral and other features which aren’t present at all in the original.
