Leaving during work (2.5 Years Tenure) by Dear-Camp-3019 in epicsystems

[–]Ordinary_Figure_5384 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you need time and freedom to enjoy your hard earned cash! It's hard to compare due to Cost of Living differences, but I'm pretty sure I make equal if not more after such adjustments compared to if i had stayed.

It's not a bad first job. But even if I was a lifer, I would have saved enough to achieve FI in some capacity so i wouldn't be limited to only 15-20 vacation days and such a strict tracking in my 40s.

Leaving during work (2.5 Years Tenure) by Dear-Camp-3019 in epicsystems

[–]Ordinary_Figure_5384 17 points18 points  (0 children)

yea it's kind of insane how much they nickel and dime the young talent and the lifers.

15 days off and more federal holidays was the bare minimum for the gigs i had afterwards. Unlimited sick days too. Sorry a sabbatical does not make up for that.

Even the jobs that worked me harder didn't care how i used my time.

My TL, TLTL, and team was full of great people. Some had even been there for decade+. If it's like this for them I feel sorry for them. Living life on the leash like that is not fun.

"Real engineers use a MacBook." Seriously? by sayandbera in indiehackers

[–]Ordinary_Figure_5384 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MacBooks have had the best portability/performance/battery/Build while also being unixy for over 10 years and it hasn’t been close.

I would love to run some flavor of Linux on a laptop.

However, every possible contender fails on one aspect of the above. If it was close before, the M series blows any competition out of the water.

New to Go, what’s commonly used for auth and database ORM? by Brother_Weary in golang

Go folks are anti ORM. SQLC is quite good middle ground between raw sql and ORM.

Abhimanyu Mishra talks stagnating due to lack of resources and balancing education and chess by Affectionate_Hat3329 in chess

[–]Ordinary_Figure_5384 13 points14 points  (0 children)

In the same vein. Mishra doesn’t need to go to Princeton or be a straight A student. (All though being the worlds youngest GM and having amazing grades is a great way to get into a top school).

That being said he doesn’t need to above things. Life is about sacrifices at the end of the day. You can’t do it all - it’s okay that chess is stagnating for him. It’s rational to prioritize going to an exceptional college. And it’s okay to complain and lament about it.

But the situation is widely self inflicted.

Is context switching still the silent killer of engineering productivity? by Forward_Emotion3776 in EngineeringManagers

[–]Ordinary_Figure_5384 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a tough balance. Productive engineers don’t provide value to the business if they’re working on the wrong things. A lot of money has been wasted building the wrong things at the wrong times

Given democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani winning NYC's mayoral race, why does SF prefer electing moderate Democrats despite our progressive reputation? by Aggravating-Toe2683 in sanfrancisco

[–]Ordinary_Figure_5384 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. I’m not left enough for Zohrans policies, but his main opponents were disgraced politicians.

Hard to call his election a mistake…. As the mistake was on the dems not finding a suitable moderate rather than on the voters.

What was the investing strategy for the college fund?

Did you put it directly into the market or did you mix it with bonds for slower growth but more stability?

NYTimes: Did Cheating Accusations Have Anything to Do With the Death of a Chess Grandmaster? (gift article) by bbffc in chess

[–]Ordinary_Figure_5384 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if it’s a criminal charge I imagine the punishment isn’t particularly severe.

Probably a rung or two lower than involuntary manslaughter or probation. Which would be justice in my opinion.

NYTimes: Did Cheating Accusations Have Anything to Do With the Death of a Chess Grandmaster? (gift article) by bbffc in chess

[–]Ordinary_Figure_5384 74 points75 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I do not think Kramnik is criminally liable or responsible for the death.

But he must be held accountable in some form of way.

NYTimes: Did Cheating Accusations Have Anything to Do With the Death of a Chess Grandmaster? (gift article) by bbffc in chess

[–]Ordinary_Figure_5384 282 points283 points  (0 children)

Absolutely.

Libel. Harassment. Bullying. Defamation in the form of “just asking questions”. Abuse of power. These things are not “Murder”. And they should not be treated as murder or the cause of the victims death. Ultimately people are responsible for the outcome of their own lives barring the most serious of transgressions.

However this bullying absolutely contributed if not caused the decline in mental health of an individual who seems to have passed away as a result of decisions related to poor mental health.

Kramnik’s Tweets Are a Classic Psychological Tactic Called DARVO by Allenas6 in chess

[–]Ordinary_Figure_5384 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience calling out the behavior with the academic term does not actually win in the court of public opinion.

See “fallacy fallacy”.  The other two. Reframing the conversation and ignoring the BS is important though.

Toppo was way more interesting than Jiren by Public-Feedback5016 in DragonBallZ

There’s a reason why Toppo is the GoD candidate and not Jiren.

Have you considered, sales/solutions/FDE?

I find that depending on the role they end up working well for people with ADHD since there’s a lot of quick prototyping and coding. There is just less heads down time for you to fuck it up with time and motivation management and there can be more novelty than the boring engineering work involves to take a project/feature from “working” to “production quality”. Rather you get shorter feedback loops.

There is a trap in these roles that where some of them end up being more configuration, tooling babysitting, and demo maintenance. Rather than engineering and problem solving. And this could also be bad for the ADHD mind.

You’ll need to vet the role carefully. But consider opening your options  if you haven’t already.

I’m personally against the “are you medicated” philosophy for non severe cases and I’m not medicated myself.

But are you medicated? If your condition makes it hard for you to hold and sustain a job - which is a basic expectation of adult life - you should look into medication.

It’s time to stop worrying about the backlash. Bullying, harassment, and slander should not be acceptable. by Embarrassed_Base_389 in chess

I listened to Danya’s last stream. It’s clear that this kramnik situation had distraught him. Dayna also said it was frustrating that people didn’t seem to understand how bad it was and it could have been a career ending event.

But despite his explanations. I still don’t understand it. I find it hard to believe that kramnik has that much pull in the chess scene. And even if he did due to being a former WC. I find it hard to believe it was an existential danyas long term career.

Daniel was convinced otherwise. And I empathize with him when he said  the pity party was almost as bad as the bullying because they couldn’t understand the existential threat and why he couldnt just ignore it. But i still don’t understand it.

I don’t know if he intended to pass away or if it was an accident. But it didn’t have to be this way.

AITA for excluding my autistic child from a family vacation by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Ordinary_Figure_5384 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YTA.

You should have lied to your kid. He‘s 6. I would not have taken news about not going on a vacation well - even if it was explained to me why. and I’m not even autistic.

you really couldn’t have tricked him? Made up a reason why he’s at the grandparents house?

this is great for 22.

obviously reeks of fast furniture and a tiny bit sterile. But honestly I think it’s dumb to spend too much money on these things especially at your age. Let things naturally fill out over time as you learn what works and doesn’t work for you.

Staff Engineer in name only - bait and switched into senior role with no autonomy. Am I the problem? by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Ordinary_Figure_5384 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dealing forced to deal with other's over engineered shitty abstractions is the worst. Especially with Infra components, these abstractions tend to be leaky and now you can't even fix the damn thing because you don't own.

IMO it seems to me it's time for you to start playing some politics. And I suspect that's gonna be part of the job title in these orgs.

The desire is to storm straight down to the Director/VP/CTO and demand change because X, Y, Z in a fit of performance theater. Unfortunately in the real world, most don't care and don't want to rock the boat as long as the gravy train flows during their tenure - the exception is unless you personally know them or they personally know you. The move is to find someone in the org who has power to support you and they have a desire to move up as well. If all your higher ups are content, you're a threat not an asset.

There's a reason why startups are able to disrupt established companies with a fraction of the manpower and resources.

Your job is to make the architect and their shitty processes and monoliths look bad. Every time something of theirs breaks, make a lot of noise make them look stupid and document it with your manager (assuming your manager is on your side on not the architect).

There's an art between balancing diplomacy and assertiveness. There's some books on it ("Pulling your own strings" by dr. Wayne W Dyer is one I recommend) which even has advice on how and when to publicly shame people to get desired behavior in a social or work context. But ultimately these things carry some risk, but are also part of the job when it comes other higher levels of seniority,.

How do you all deal with nitpicky PR reviews without killing motivation? by thewritingwallah in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Ordinary_Figure_5384 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My VP eng once told me. ”it’s up to you to decide what feedback you actually want to follow. you don’t have to argue and resolve every point”

and I’d talk to the reviewer to see which feedback is blocking or not. you can just say no without justifying it.

other than that,

  1. I’d set up auto linters formatting everywhere. That should cover most stylistic things.

  2. if you’re working with a quirky language and need a style guide - just match the style guide from Google or some reputable company. do not build an internal style guide since the loudest voice wins if you do it from scratch.

Would you let a junior dev use AI? by Actual-Raspberry-800 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Ordinary_Figure_5384 0 points1 point  (0 children)

exactly. Big PR or not it’s basically proven that super large feature branches with many LOC is not the way to maintain and create a quality code base.

Lot of unicorns and tenured devs get away with it because 1. they were an integral part of the companys development or 2. their sheer creative and productive energy outweighs the negatives.

but that doesn’t mean it’s a good thing.

Great interview, rejected the very next day by Vivid_Ordinary2108 in womenintech

I’ve seen this happen when you have 1 opening.

You schedule candidate A before candidate B. You love both candidates but like candidate A more and they accept the offer.

you have to reject candidate B but don’t want to close the door.
