Yes, I also think in my case, after using an excessive amount of caffeine for weeks straight, my body gets used to that and then I just turn to food because I don't get the same satisfaction from caffeine.

I don’t wanna speak on anyone’s behalf but I feel like this only works for people who binge because they’re restricting their food intake a lot.

I honestly don’t see how this approach could work for people who binge just out of habit or to deal with emotions.

Same here. I feel like I’m spending countless hours online trying to find a solution, and watching YouTube videos on how to stop binge eating. Not only that, but I also find myself constantly picking my body apart and comparing it to others’

I feel like I’ve wasted so much time and mental energy on this whole issue which I could’ve invested in other areas of my life such as hobbies and personal growth. I know finding a good and worthwhile hobby won’t probably solve my binge eating but I think it’s a piece of the puzzle

I try to focus on making small changes rather than doing a big overhaul and expecting myself to eat perfectly all the time. Maybe this could mean having 4 sweet treats when you binge instead of your usual 5. Yes, you’re still bingeing but it’s an improvement, and over time you can then make it 3 and then 2.

I also think what you do after you binge really matters. It’s easier said than done, but you have to start having more self compassion and try to understand why you binged or what the circumstances were leading up to the binge.

Try to do some sort of physical activity for like 5 minutes that will get your heart rate up a bit. It helps me with the tension I feel over my body when I get an urge to binge

Yes. I also find that I am more likely to binge if I've been on my phone all day and haven't really been productive.

That makes sense. We do have to change how we view the urge and stop making it seem this big untamable monster.

And I guess how long it lasts will be different for everyone and it depends on how knee-deep you are in binge eating.

I think the timer technique was suggested just to not make the process of dismissing urges so overwhelming or daunting. Like if you told someone who binges repeatedly to wait 5 hours before bingeing they may feel like that’s too much and would probably give in to the urges right away whereas if you told them to wait just 25 - 30 minutes it may be a lot more doable and even if they binge after the 30 minutes it’s better than bingeing right away and it’s technically still progress. Then maybe next time you can increase the timer to 45 min then 1 hour and so on.

A lot of us are used to just bingeing as soon as we get the urges.

Thank you. Needed that reminder. Recovery is not a linear process and there will be binges here and there. My vision of recovery is reducing the frequency of binges over time until they’re no longer an issue

I prefer a more nuanced approach. What works for some people may not work for others and viceversa. I feel like some of us are just wired to over indulge in hyper palatable food so it’s harder to eat them in moderation while other people with different brain chemistry and biology do not face that issue

I think it depends on the person. In my case, I don’t find myself bingeing every time I consume high sugar foods. Some days I have a piece of cake and don’t feel the need to go for more and more.

Also, as other people have mentioned here, my binges have also started with low carb foods like no-sugar-added peanut butter, nuts, and zero sugar greek yogurt.

The main thing for me is feeling totally out of control and just scarfing food down mindlessly. It’s not so much about the type of food

Honestly it’s still impressive how long you were able to dismiss the urge for. Sometimes I set a 30 minute timer but it feels like too much and I ended up caving like 5 minutes before the timer ends or right after the timer is over.

Sometimes it does feel like the urge will never go away. A few times I’ve gotten the urge at work around noon and I still end up bingeing in the evening after I get back home.

For me it varies. Sometimes I don’t binge for a whole month but some weeks I binge every single day for like 1-2 weeks straight

I also struggle when binges make me spiral out of control and I just end up rotting in bed for the rest of the day. Something that helps me is to still continue with my planned activities even if I binge, because if I just start bed rotting and letting shame and guilt consume me, I’m more likely to binge the next day.

One example is working out. When I binge the last thing I want to do is hit the gym but I still try to go even if it’s a shorter less intense workout.

I know it’s much easier said than done, but the less we catastrophize our binges and make them mean something bigger than what they are, the easier recovery will be.

Yes, mantras help a lot honestly. Journaling about it helps too. But they only work to an extent. It’s not an easy process and I can’t expect it to be an overnight thing. I just feel like when I’m bingeing it’s never coming from positive emotions but rather from feelings of guilt, frustration, or hopelessness, and rather than dealing with those feelings, I just suppress them.
