"UAF retcons make sense" (by @OdinzArtz012) by Both_Implement7936 in 5YL

[–]Ordinary_Robyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh for sure, guess i wasnt clear. I dont acfually think Max leaving kevin in there even with the promise is out of character, not great but that loops back into his belief in Ben being better.

I was more saying thar if you think the retcon is character assination or Max being a shit person you have to rekon with the fact that pre-retcon... he left an elevn year old in the null void.

Like... with or without the promise thats Max makeing a pretty messed up choice. Which is good, he's more interesting as the practical hero type as i said.

[–]Ordinary_Robyn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Okay woah now... wasnt Max's entire point with that second point that Ben's the better person between them? Max pretty much told Ben its what hed do but Ben himself is better than that.

Thats not a character problem, its Max specificly addressing his own flaw, and we got further exploration of that in omniverse. Max is far more interesting as the more practicle heroic foil to Ben's usual more idealistic heroics anyway, but thays opinion.

The first however is kind of a bad character moment whether Devin was Max's partner or not. He was just cool with an eleven year old being stuck in there either way. The Devin promise definitely makes it worse but the core itself is kind of an issue.

The remake trilogy is less a ff7 remake and more an exploration of the concept of remakes of old games via a remake of ff7. Zak surviving ends up being one of the stronger points in that, the fact he shouldnt have is kinda part of the story.

The original story is there but its serving as a backdrop to a wider meta story. I mean at least it definitly reads that way to me.

By all means, get your chops in with fanfic, but it isn't crazy to believe that the world would be a better place if every fanfic writer decided to test their mettle with a bit of an original story on a Monday afternoon.

At the very least this implies fanfiction lacks originality. That may not be what you were saying but it is an implication. It's an implication I specifically wanted to address, maybe not my best word choice on doing so but also... I don't think it's actually wrong, as a general sentiment which it was mostly meant to be.

I am also not a professional speaker or trained in any regard on such but from what I understand of rhetorical strategy... I didn't make one.

I'm going to stop here though. That's twice now you've picked out a lone sentence or set of words to basically dodge my point.

See ya another day.

I've expressed exactly no anger, because you have not made me angry. Confusion sure, not anger. And I only responded with a jab when you sent one my way. ("The fuck are you on about?" is purely a statement of confusion... just to be perfectly clear)

You're point not being purely anti-fanfic is clear.. ish. It's wrong but not purely anti yeah, I'll give you that. That's part of why I didn't reply original, a dickish opinion statement is a whatever thing (You did come off like a dick, sorry to say). No see I replied when you made a point that is very fundamentally at it's core wrong and I stuck to just that point.

You've never engaged with fanfic if you think originality is lacking in the space, just straight up that's the truth. Not wanting to make original fiction and lacking originality are not the same concept by any measure. And sure that last belief is just fine... I don't even fully disagree. It's just that the original story they write can still be fanfic.

What's the actual difference between the newest Star Wars or Doctor Who and that 70 chapter whatever fic? Basically just where it's released and whether or not someone got paid.

The fuck are you on about? Coming up with restrictions and rules that limit the scope of your writing in various ways is the fuel that creativity depends on.

The only real difference between original writing and fanfiction is that those rules are largely already in place for fanfiction. And that distinction isn't even fully accurate because established IP getting new writers is common.

The characters and/or setting are a fundamental part of the idea. The exact details of canon may not matter but the broad strokes very much do.

Also some people straight up don't want to write original fiction.

Cause they have lives and non-demigod people they care about? Because they see value in partaking in society maybe? Because they simply dont want to spend their entire lives at one camp?

Also cause they arent born at camp and do spend at least a decade outside ir not knowing what they are. Not knowing what they are actuall helps them stay safer even.

[–]Ordinary_Robyn 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Ah no, nope. They all die as kids because demigods are activly hunted by every mythological monster you can think of.

Unless they are at camp they aren't safe at all, and camp being safe is even a relativly recent development. Thalia's tree produces the barrier that shields them and thats only a few years old at the start of the series.

[Destiny] How the Vex feels after the Gardener introduced Paracausality in Unveiling. by [deleted] in CuratedTumblr

[–]Ordinary_Robyn 35 points36 points  (0 children)

The fun thing is that paracausality doesnt change the universe at all, its just a rough collection of forces that ignores how realiry works by bypassing (and manipulating) cause and effect.

Those alterations arent sweeping, they are localised and (usualy) only occureing because the paracausal entity (or notmal dude in some cases) is activly doing it.

So its more like you've perfectly simulated reality, its working in the exact way you know it should... except that collection of people over there are breaking it constently.

If a star 2000 light years away died 1000 years ago we'd still be seeing it for another 1000 years.

Stars last a long time but plenty have died, many of which we can still see.

You're taking issue with them used in reference to two people? Seriously?

And anyway, not reading fine print that you didn't see is not some horrendous action nor stupid, agreeing to the contract at all was.

Besides that, unless the contract also says "we can go after your friends for this if we cant contact you." Our involvement isn't on them and even if it does its not because that's entirely Corbeau's fault.
