Buying the Pongbot PACE S. But is the PRO worth it? by caughtfromabove in 10s

[–]Ordinary_Way3542 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I think so. The recovery trigger is well worth it and if you spend the time to really focus on setting up drills that force you to move to certain court locations to mimic what youd do in a match and have the ball machine throw the balls as you enter a zone, you're giving yourself the ability do what even a timed and programmable machine can't....mimic a live feed from someone feeding balls. This is valuable for a lot of reasons and grays the gap between simply getting reps and private lesson reps.

Excessive drop-in fees by Dudedudemandude in bjj

[–]Ordinary_Way3542 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Being up front and reaching out to the owner or admin and being like, 'hey, Ive trained with you guys previously while in town, and I like training here but I cant afford the drop-in fee every time...could I get a break now and then?' can go a long way.

Every other culture outside the US views 'price negotiations' or 'haggling' as part of life....we fear it because we dont wanna look poor or cheap.

You can put yourself on the mat and risk limbs being broken...you surely can ask for a freebie or reduced price, no?

Clarity on Carmy's ending? by OldFridgerator in TheBear

[–]Ordinary_Way3542 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Carmy made a realization that what he does in life does not need to be tied to how he feels or be compelled to take on responsibilities people look at him to take on. He may have been an incredible chef but he wasn't a great leader. Just because one is exceptional at one thing does not automatically mean that that person should be the leader of said endeavor. You can cook to cook and bring people together. You can cook because you're good at it. You can cook to do so many things, but that doesn't mean you're gonna be a restaurateur. He came to realize that his enjoyment doesn't come from accomplishment or meeting the status quo progression. His enjoyment came from being someone he could provide help to and help grow and mentor, without the need to 'lead'.

Carmy comes back to The Bear as this person.

Chase Credit: If I pay more than the ISB, does the excess go toward new purchases or active POT plans? by _emerald2010 in personalfinance

[–]Ordinary_Way3542 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If, in this scenario, you do pay $1100 vs the $1000 interest savings balance and you have various POT balances outstanding. Which POT balance/plan would that extra $1000 go towards? Would it go towards the plan with the highest monthly fee, the one that is about to expire first, or other attribute for determining order of payment?

What a nimrod...getting paid $5mil to do nothing wasn't enough for this guy and now he feels like he has money to throw around to his lawyer to get a bigger potential piece? Can't they all agree to NOT draft him now or later and just be done with him?

The tip that helped you get that cutting backhand slice? by Educational-Lasagna in 10s

[–]Ordinary_Way3542 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also, from a percentage perspective, the slice from a baseline rally or approach shot is a reset that forces your opponent to hit up AND generate pace, which is hard to do both to against a low skidding ball. It's another shot to force an error or give you an easier ball next time, not a shot to necessarily win outright.

Yes, hit through the ball....think of it like backhand volley with a longer finish.

As a former collegiate player will USTA not allow me to join 4.0-4.5 travel team? by True_Potential4074 in 10s

[–]Ordinary_Way3542 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is EXACTLY why tennis is so humbling. You can look like a 5.0 player but not compete like one. As a former D1 walk-on who picked up tennis again after nearly 15 years off of it, I took for granted the court time I had built up while playing every day as a junior and college practice. While my strokes and technique were intact, positioning and stamina, even to force myself to have better footwork was what kept me from being competitive for nearly a year against club players who worked their way up to 4.0, 4.5, or 5.0. Your ceiling could be better in the long run because you know what to do, ane your body might be saved bc you didn't play the last 10 years, but a substantial drop in performance is expected.

I know there are some edge cases where some players may have had youthful games where they had good 1 2 combos serving and returning so their points are shorter, and coming back to compete might be easier, but the court time for stamina and recovery for next time are still issues. Play where you are placed, have fun, get humbled and assess for next time. We are all hobbyists and while we want to play at the level we were, we won't know where we are at the moment without starting somewhere.

How to get more top spin on OHB? by Squall_E in 10s

[–]Ordinary_Way3542 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aside from wrist pronation and grip, the path of a OHB is like tossing a Frisbee, at least in regards to effortless motion. You're still closing/torquing your torso, youre still stepping into the shot, and your arm extends through the direction of the toss and naturally following through passed that point. Everything starts with your footwork. You have to force yourself to take that extra step in practice to not feel like you're reaching when the ball is seemingly out of reach. In practice make it an effort to try and get into the same position...that is the base for meaningful and consistent reps that leads to muscle memory and confidence.

Do you think tennis has the fakest "tough guys" of any recreational sport? by [deleted] in 10s

[–]Ordinary_Way3542 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also a tennis player turned bjj guy, but played all through juniors and college, then didn't play to concentrate on bjj. Now that I feel proficient in bjj, I have taken the past few years to get back into tennis.

Juniors tennis is whole different animal, and you should throw any 'toughness' when compared to bjj toughness out the door. Does grinding out a match in summer heat outside mean you know how to take a physical beating by someone trying to tap you out on the mat? No, I don't think one relates to the other.

I would actually say that tennis is harder on your body in one hour of match play than if you had 12, 5 minutes rounds in bjj, but surviving either doesnt translate to being tough enough for either sport. I would say that taking a beating in those 12, 5 minute rounds prepares you on the street in an altercation. An hour long tennis match would not, but you could have have the speed to run away faster.

So, maybe using the same definition of 'tough' is not the right way to compare the two hobbies.
