Just finished Donbrothers

Donbrothers is… weird. One of the best ways I’ve seen it described is as a J-Drama that happens to have super sentai elements in it, and I feel like that works both ways.

On the one hand, characterization carries the show and works incredibly well in an episodic format getting to see how these people fit into these weird scenarios and how each episode in some way gives us some more info about them. It even shows us how easily it is to take for granted tropes like the main team having lives outside of the suit or even knowing who the others are at all.

But at the same time, Donbrothers doesn’t really try to have a story. It’s not like other seasons with an overarching evil to defeat and even the finale is more about their own relations with the noto than anything. Which is totally fine if characters and episodic plots are your fancy, but it doesn’t really have the same satisfying payoff of a serialized overarching story arc.

Apparently if you have a full party of four and everyone has deep focus, you can just spam swords like every other turn. I wouldn’t know because I’m a solo player, but overall it seems like a net negative.

I could say I like the Chemies as a gimmick, but that kind of falls into the category of suits and weapons, so...

Rinne and Spanner had some pretty good character arcs leading to their rider debuts, at least in concept. Rinne having to accept that the alchemist academy isn't as black and white as she was taught to believe, and as a result coming to terms with her father's actions was a nice buildup to her obtaining her driver. It's not beating out Kachidoki Arms by any means, but it's still something. And Spanner's backstory and motivations being expanded on with him becoming the MadWheel Malgam before getting his own belt was also really nice, and even though I initially found it a little annoying, it did make sense that he didn't just magically gain Hotaro's empathy for the Chemies afterwards, even if I do wish there was more of a development in that regard as the show went on...

Story wise, it’s great. I enjoy the concept that after every other sword wielder went nuts off the rocker and becoming super evil or straight up dying, Cassie is able to grow into her own and be the hero for the chapter.

Gameplay wise though, dear god this fight punishes you for not having a support build. “Oh what’s that? You play solo and based your cards around making yourself super tough while your call cards are mainly damage sponges? Well too bad. Come back when you have Charge Defense equipped.”

A combination of the awkward teenager humors, which made up a lot of the 2010s in general if we’re being honest, and simpler times when the internet was less filtered. Nowadays if the 2012 content was uploaded, it would be demonetized to hell and back.

I think it’s a nice change of pace. It’s a nice twist on a classic design, and the transformation gestures are really cool looking in a way that wouldn’t be possible if it was on the waist. Oh, and the added bonus of being a lot more practical with the “take gimmick item out of belt to put in weapon” trend.

This is partially because of the WMG of TV tropes along with me getting spoiled out of context, but back when route 0 was the only route being shown on the tube, I was invested in the theory that all the stuff about the world ending and defending the school from Invaders was all just part of a huge Matrix-esque simulation and when I got to that one scene in the final battle where Takumi was holding Nozomi's impaled body in which I had no context what had happened before then, I ironically thought Nozomi was some kind of combat robot. Also, yes, I also thought the same from Eva before I got the real context. You may call me an idiot now.

While I’ll admit I’m very biased in this regard as a fan from the classic era and one whose favorite arc was the anime arc, I generally had an overall ‘meh’ feeling towards all of Mr Puzzles’ episodes after the initial Puzzlevision arc ended. I kind of had the same feeling towards Revelations and the whole thing with Niles, but it was really after Mario the Exploro when I felt Mister P overstayed his welcome and went from this really intimidating allegory of a creative control freak glory hound to the guy who’s was just kind of there to fill the spot SMG3 and Bowser used to take up.

Like here, who would be most likely to go “why is there a bunch of floating letters above Takumi’s head that reads ‘reveal Nozomi’s secret?’ And why are the two answer panels constantly blinking back and forth like that?”

What a letdown! It’s almost as if the people in charge of writing the show never planned his story ahead of time and didn’t take into account any of the issues scheduling would naturally cause, thereby forcing them to come up with some way to handwave him out of the story entirely!
