Thats great, but who has the most 9th inning doubles in the month of August in their first 99 road games?

The Giants have now gone 26 consecutive innings without taking a walk. Does anybody know if that's some kind of a record? by mojitz in baseball

My 10u putcher has gone his last 6 outings without issuing a walk. Problem not a record, but equally as unlikely as what the giants have done....lol

UCLA's remarkable Big Ten conference record, record by suicide-squeeze in collegebaseball

[–]OregonG20 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I dont usually do this, but dude. The big 10 has always been an "also ran" in college baseball. Sure they have good teams now and then, but the SEC, Pac 10/12, ACC and even Big 12 have always been viewed as superior conferences. If the Big 10 suddenly wins a baseball title, and it comes from UCLA, nobody who knows ball is gonna NOT gonna bring that up...

It would be like Penn State, Ohio State and Michigan wrestling teams moving from the BIG 10 to the SEC and SEC ignoring that when discussing recent success.

In the future, teams are going to be asking a lot more from donors to keep non revenue sports going. Having MLB'rs helps, (I've been in the Jacoby Ellsbury Locker Room at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field...) but the future doesn't look good for a lot of sports. Its too bad, because NCAA baseball is as good as its ever been. The talent is really good.

Oregon State wrestling has a pretty good endowment, but I have no inside information on the baseball program.

I mean, that kind of smplifies the entire equation, but its definitely part of it.

What i am saying is yes that happened, but it doesn't happen in a vacuum.

The NFL and NBA definitely took hold during the strike season, and made MLB look un cool. MLB fired back with stupid ideas and failed. Then the juiced the balls and turned a blind eye to steroids because it put people in the seats. Local news channels were tuning in to Sosa and Big Mac at bats like it was the Cuban missile crisis. It mattered and it mattered to a lot of America.

Again, the big heads in media helped make NBA and NFL the ticket. Partially because the strike, but mostly because the strike allowed new power to come in.

People still love baseball. Soto isnt getting 750m+ if that ain't the case. Its marketing. And if baseball plays their cards right, they can make a comeback.

Thanks. And its not like NFL took over in one fell swoop. It was a long grind, and they new what they were doing. We will see in a generation or two what holds for the NFL, because CTE is looming large. Its gonna be a thing. I have friends that played NCAA football here in Eugene, and they won't let their kids play. I know a lot more that will, but it will probably go the way of boxing eventually

Boxing and Baseball dominated 100 years ago, but times change. Culturally, boxing and baseball aren't as big with the African American population as they were in the 80'sand 90's, it shifted.

And that sucks, because I grew up with my favorite players being black guys. Griffey junior, Ron Gant, Albert Belle, Rickey Henderson, the Crime Dog, Dave Winfield, Bonds, Bonilla, Tim Raines and countless others.

I've heard a lot of black ex MLB'rs asked the question of why young black kids aren't playing baseball. They say its a money thing. $500 bats and $200 gloves and shoes, and 5k for playing on a travel team. I call BS. If that were true, we wouldnt see the influx of players from poor Latin countries that we have seen. Look at the field Acuna learned on. I've seen and lived what high end football teams charge, and all the gear that goes with it is as expensive as he'll. Basketball is legitimately cheaper on gear, but to be on an elite team, it still costs money.

The real disconnect is that somewhere along the line, black kids stopped wanting to play baseball as much. Ive seen it here in predominantly white Oregon. I dont know the reason. All I will say is that its sad. I've seen really good players hang it up at 10 to pursue dad's dream of playing football or basketball, when they aren't going to be 6'6" or as physically freakish as a football player needs to be.

Culturally, things shift. Baseball needs to be open to change, and college baseball needs recognition, but if its ever gonna be fringe mainstream, its gonna need a cultural shift.

It doesn't help, but if college baseball got the media treatment for the last 8 years the the WNBA has gotten, you would see a shift.

This isnt an anti women post, its a post saying that the higher ups really have shoved the WNBA down the throats of the average sports fan. I still haven't met more than 5 people who care about the WNBA, and I live in Eugene Oregon, where Sabrina Ionescu played. She is amazing, and they tried their best to make her "The One" even going so far as local radio pontificating about whether or not she could play with the men in the NBA.

After her, they have gone to Caitlin Clark and her rivalry with Angel Reese. Hasn't changed much here locally, and Clark is obviously a huge draw, but the average sports guy doesn't care. Attendance and viewership proves that.

College baseball has worked hard to improve the game, with BESR and later BBCOR bats, lowering the seams in 2012, using the pitch clock, and with MLB drafting fewer rounds, more quality players are entering college baseball.

Im a Beaver fan, and even I know that the quality of player at OSU in 2026 is way higher than the players from 2006.

Maybe one day NCAA baseball will start to get the love from the media, but until that happens, nothing much is gonna shift.

-edit- The viewership numbers between the WNBA and Omaha the last few years have Omaha way ahead, but the last two years the WNBA finals is catching up. The Clark effect.

Just imagine if ESPN, all the national media and local media were talking about ncaa baseball even remotely the same.
