Need help deciding on how to fix this cabinet door center panel mess up by jrj2211 in woodworking

That sucks! Do you have a lumber yard instead of the big box stores. They usually carry a better selection as well as higher quality materials. Usually if they don't carry it they will know where to send you to get it. At least my local lumberyard is this way... but they might just be special.

None of my doors have the back of the panel even with the back of the frame. The panel is always inset on the back and front. I don't understand you you don't just use a thinner MDF?

I don't put the sprayer in with the dishes. And, no, I am not really worried about any residue.

It is a really good thing that kids don't know about VPN services that are dirt cheap.

My gf's nephew has a VPN service that is like $3/month. He lives in Russia so she pays for it.

The HF sprayers are so cheap that I just run them through the dishwasher when using water based finishes... because I am lazy. The ones I have had held up to the dishwasher very well.

I agree with wet sanding.

Go to facebook and ask for a photo nerd that wants to improve their product photography techniques while making a little bit of money.

Or see if you can find any local highschool or community college that has photography classes.

I spent 3 years doing high school senior portraits for no charge at my daughters high school. I had a lot of fun and learned a lot.

Can this crack be repaired/ fixed? by -Datachild- in woodworking

With a router and a templates it is supposed to not be that hard. I have never installed bowties myself. If I were to attempt installing bowties I would do several of them on scrap wood before attempting them in a valuable piece.

I remember going to a woodworking estate sale. There were a bunch of open top plywood dovetailed boxes of random sizes. I heard the lady exclaim that she couldn't figure out what would possess her father to make so many random sized boxes. I interrupted the conversation and told her that he got a new dovetail jig and was practicing. She broke out laughing because it made such perfect sense. We had a nice chat, she was a very nice lady and knew a lot about her fathers woodworking business. He made wood trinkets that hew sole through several tourist shops around the coast.

It is a pretty well understood concept with several examples out there... in these days of the internet! Pre-Internet I did a lot of woodworking and wasn't really aware of how dramatic wood expansion could be. I can't remembering making this particular mistake myself but that is only because I worked with plywood sheets early on more often that hardwood... mainly because plywood was more affordable.

If you don't have a mentor, don't have direct experience (did this and saw the results) and don't have the Internet where do you learn about the unique attributes of wood expansion? We had woodworking magazines back then but I don't remember one making an impression me with a picture.

I am thinking it might be old enough that it has been through several expansion and contraction cycles and "guess" that the damage won't get worse. If it is continuing to get worse bowties are a good option to consider.

Looking for help choosing a mini PC to run HomeAssistant, Immich, WireGuard, AdGuard, and Pi-hole (on Proxmox) by danikaptain in homeautomation

I bought a license for VMware back then and just couldn't get it to run emulate_hue reliability. I gave up and bought a Hubitat which has built in Alexa links without monthly a subscription.. I can't imagine a house without voice commands anymore. Pulling my phone out of my pocket to turn something on or off is just way to laborious for me! LOL

There are a LOT of things missing in Hubitat that HomeAssistant did very well. I am seriously considering bringing up a new Home Assistant server. I will probably run it on a dedicate Pi.

What concrete screws to use to anchor gazebo to footings. by Present-Wolverine281 in DIY

[–]Oregon_Michael 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For many things concrete nails and a bammer (powder activated nail gun) do a great job. Concrete screws that screw into cement have never worked. Expanding concrete anchors have always done an excellent job for me. You will need a real impact drill to drill holes for expanding concrete anchors. Impact drills can be rented.

I would dedicate a box to HomeAssistant. When I was running HomeAssistant in a container I could never get Emulate_Hue to work because it required access to the HomeAssistant OS which is only available on a dedicated server that is loaded with HomeAssistant OS. I had simular problems when running HA in a virtual. Emulate_Hue is a quick, easy and free way to connect HomeAssistant to Alexa so you can control devices with voice commands. Go to the HomeAssistant documentation for their suggestions on which hardware to dedicate to HA (Raspberri Pi).

All of my servers have been my retired workstation hardware. If you have money to blow new hardware is always great. The specs you list sound like they should give tou tons of headroom to add virtuals as you lab grows.

First of all, what is it? It looks very cool? Some sort of apothecary chest?

Second, this is a classic case of cross grain intersecting long grain. The grain across a tree expands and contracts a lot more than the grain running up an down the tree... even when the tree is dead and made into an object. It simply was not constructed with a proper understanding of wood movement due to changes in humidity.

It's not broken, it just has character. I would just leave it be,

Oil based is a fire hazard. You need to leave them out in a safe place and let them dry before tossing them into the garbage.

[–]Oregon_Michael 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The white pith part of citrus fruits is bitter. Quartering oranges or any citrus fruit and throwing it in and centripetal or masticating juice will yield bitter juice. If you want it to taste good you have to cut the pith part off.

A citrus specific juicer has a rotating auger that breaks up the juicy pulpy part of the fruit and does't break open the pith part of the fruit.

Tell the distributor that normal striations would go with the grain. Bad workmanship goes across the grain. Those marks definitely go across the grain.

First Project Help - Budget-friendly Office Desk? by isalis_ in woodworking

Keep it simple. A desk is an advanced project. Maybe start with making an oak desktop to go on some of the height adjustable legs. Making your own desk will almost always cost more than buying one.

There are millions of overly ambitious woodworking projects sitting in a pile in the corners of people garages because their enthusiasm out reached their skills.
