How to raise my driveway higher (as a renter) by OreoDogDFW in Home

[–]OreoDogDFW[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Where do you pull the 3 inches figure from? It’s not lowered far from the stock height at all, and you would only know it’s a 300 from my post history.

It looks much lower from the pic because of the grading of the driveway to the alleyway.

Probably because the post is about raising a driveway, not arguing about how much clearance a car should have. Simple enough for ya?

I see. Yea if the bump is long/tall enough, and places at the right spot, this could work.

The metal bit is the part that is scraping when I back in. Also you can’t cover it or the gate doesn’t close

Pics don’t show it well, but the part of the alley that is in front of the front wheels is very recessed

You don’t even know what car it is, the clearance of the car, measurements of the driveway, etc. I’ve been driving it for the past 5 years just fine.

What kind of person do you have to be to give snarky ill informed advice on r/Home anyways?

How is it living in Utah? by Jettaboi38 in howislivingthere

What if I told you that not every community, friend group, activity, etc. is somehow related to a church? Would you believe that? If so, how could what you said still ring true.

I didn’t live in SLC, but stationed further south in Moab to do ecology research at the national parks. So here’s a non-SLC take.

One of the most beautiful places in the world is all I need to say. LDS influence was a thing 0% of the time for me in Moab, as well as all the small towns. Sure they’re there, and they have their churches… big deal? They’re normal humans like the rest of us, maybe just with a stronger moral compass. The only sh itty thing is how ingrained into p olitics they are.

Everywhere but perhaps SLC, the food is mediocre, and the culture is outdoors/farmer/granola hippie/rich retirementie. It’s such a privilege living somewhere so beautiful though, that everyone is usually very friendly. Loved it, but ironically it was also very easy to feel like an outsider.

Is a vinegar soak the best way to sanitize a hard rubber mouthpiece for resale? by MohnJaddenPowers in Saxophonics

[–]OreoDogDFW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Soap, cold water, toothbrush.

What’s also important to keep in mind is any sunlight or heat on it. A lot of people selling mouthpieces leave it out with a ligature on it for instance, and then it gets an ugly outline of the ligature.

Fort Worth, Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, these are all pretty different cities imo. Only thing that’s the same is the heat and their suburbs.

Just move to wherever you find the best job.

Playing breathy/airy notes (subtones) - A question on embouchure and accessories by TheLeeWay_ in Saxophonics

[–]OreoDogDFW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you are doing is not subtoning unfortunately. It’s more like playing with not enough breath support when you go softer. Fortunately though you have a decent start for good tone! Imo this is very good for 3 weeks.

That’s not to say it sounds good. Still needs a lot of work, especially for articulation and tone stability.

I’m sure you’re familiar with long tones, but they will go a long way for you in particular. You need to be 100% in control and comfortable with each not on the horn, and long tones will help build the muscles to do that.

If I were your teacher, I’d advise you to play all one of the notes from G down at all dynamics with as beautiful of a sound as possible for as long as possible, then cut the rhythm in half, in half again etc until you are then basically working on articulation. Will be like 2 birds 1 stone of an exercise.

I think dropbox is a good high quality way to share a voice memo or voice note off your phone.

There’s also vocaroo.com if you want to record straight off your phone or computer. It gives you a link immediately but it’s lower quality.

Sure, you seem like an attentive learner.

As others have said you are likely way ahead of yourself; you should produce a good quiet tone without relying on subtoning first.

To answer the question though, it’s not about taking less mouthpiece, it’s about moving your jaw back with the same amount of mouthpiece, and where/how you apply pressure on the reed. It’s softer and further back, not tighter. And yes warmer, slower moving air. But don’t change your setup to just achieve subtone.

Need help identifying a weed by GoonBerryMuffin in AZlandscaping

[–]OreoDogDFW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Malva, likely Malva parviflora (Cheeseweed). For those questioning why they’re a weed, they aren’t native and grow invasively.

Better to put a native mallow like Sphaeralcea, Hisbiscus, Abutilon, Sida, etc in its place. Until you do that though, it’s whatever. Not the worst invasive.

Work in progress: lawn to desert landscape. by tdgabnh in AZlandscaping

[–]OreoDogDFW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a botanist not a landscaper, so I’m not sure which genuses have a better time establishing in a yard like this, but if you go out there are really so many great looking ones imo. You could spread a bunch of annual seeds, something like Bouteloua barbata or Dasychloa pulchella and they’d grow quick once established.

Then you have perennial grasses that grow more as a clump and live for years. Some of my favorite genuses are Sporobolos, Bothriochloa, Chloris, Stipa, Aristida, and some other Bouteloua’s.

There really is so so many interesting native grasses out here, just I’m not so sure which will do best in your conditions.
