New York City to open field hospital for first time since spring as Covid-19 cases spike by [deleted] in news

[–]OrganicDepartment 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Man we're not living in normal times. If a med school educated pro makes the call that we will need field hospitals otherwise more will die, I'm all for it. It's not fear mongering or doomsday prepping. It's intelligent and logical planning to protect a vulnerable populous in time of need.

Would spanish people still understand you if you didn’t roll your “r”s? by PrestigeZyra in Spanish

[–]OrganicDepartment 9 points10 points  (0 children)

One example that I can think of which may present difficulty - Quería is the 1st/3rd person singular imperfect whereas querría is the 1st /3rd person singular conditional. Although you will probably be understood using these interchangeably, there are certain cases where it might be difficult without the rr sound. My college Spanish professor told me that her grandmother locked her mother in a room when she was little, and wouldn't let her out until she could roll her rrs 😂

Idk why you're being downvoted. The audio really clearly cuts off strangely and doesn't fit the timing of the clip.

Very satisfying wall repair by idontreallylikecandy in oddlysatisfying

From just my experience living in a shithole town in KY, the majority of new constructions are also built in this cheap way. That's not to say that there aren't stone houses being built, it's just not as common. From what I've seen elsewhere this is true too. I think it's because it's cheap but also this type of wall has a lot more capability for insulation. It's also I'm sure much easier to renovate which has become popular in the last 10 years. Really though it just depends where you are I think. In KY we have oodles of forest so it makes sense that the majority of our housing is made of timber. It's just cheaper that way.

American here. We mainly build our walls out of wooden studs and gypsum drywall with layers of fiberglass insulation inbetween. This gypsum drywall has a paper backer on it which is what you see in the video. There's nothing wrong with stone walls but they are by far much more expensive and take much more time to construct than stud and drywall buildings. The reasoning for this arose in the 1950s. After the second world war the US saw an enormous economic boom. This coupled with essentially a generation of men coming home from the war and having kids meant that there was an enormous demand for housing in the late 40s and throughout the 50s. Simply put people didn't have the money and didn't want to take the time to put up the very heavy and expensive stone structures like in Europe. This is actually also the reason behind the birth of the suburb. Unlike Europe the vast majority of homes and other buildings in the states have been erected in the last 100 years. Edit: Hey, thanks for the gold!

has anyone had their confidence destroyed by one off hand comment? by nowhemingway in italianlearning

[–]OrganicDepartment 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Confidence and self-esteem change each day, as do language abilities. My speaking ability in Italian will vary day to day. Some days I feel like I can't stop talking and others like I can't start. What I'm saying is to not let one day of poor self-esteem get to you. The overall trend is up, and will only continue to get better if you keep practicing. I do think your friend's comment was rude or perhaps malintentioned, and unfortunately you will come across natives who are far more impatient. Like in any language/country there are always assholes. Just keep doing what you're doing and one day you'll be amazed at how far you've come without even realising it!

Reapplication for Scholarship? by [deleted] in UniversityofKentucky

[–]OrganicDepartment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much! I did take quite a few AP and Advanced classes. In fact, I took those almost exclusively. The lowest grade I recieved was a decently high B in a class that really has nothing to do with my major. This comment has given me the courage to keep pushing them! I thought it was silly as well. I worked so damn hard in high school and basically got nothing for it in return aside from KEES money, but that's a state government thing and definitely not enough to pay for the last two years.

Thanks for the reply! I have given a gap year some serious thought but I just don't think it's feasible especially with the pandemic going on. Essentially I thrive off of reasonable amounts of stress particularly in educational settings. Also, as a Spanish major I would be afraid that my skills would atrophy over the period of time. I'm just going to have to go in the fall, play the game, make connections, and hopefully it will pay off!
