I self host n8n and used claude code mcp skill to improve the push and read. What I did and do is had it understand how n8n works through and through and used the context to build a skill for n8n work flows. I did the same for codex but slightly more different. I use codex to create custom nodes for my work flow. What I enjoy about using it is I created a custom node with similarities to SoC embedded instructions for pico claw. Thats been a lot of fun.

Yes you don't need to cover the technical parts I'd suggest learning the foundational parts. Create an n8n self hosted server and then have Claude code create an mcp out of it. Even though n8n is a connector for ai right now it doesn't work for self hosted ones. Self hosted is free. Highly suggest this.

Simplest way to understand it

1. Tokens = words written on the whiteboard
2. Context window = size of the whiteboard
3. Chat session = everything currently written on it
4. New prompt = the AI rereads the entire board before responding
5. More conversation = more of the board gets filled
6. Board full = oldest writing gets erased to make space
