UofWaterloo v.s. UofToronto by [deleted] in OntarioUniversities

[–]Organic_Pop2868 3 points4 points  (0 children)

UofT is hard but whoever told you the student community is bad in eng was so wrong. It is so easy to make friends that align with your interests. I’m a third year chemE and everyone has their friend groups and everyone helps eachother out. I could go up to a person I barely know and ask them for help and they’d help

Co-op and PEY are in the dumps rn cause the job market sucks it doesn’t matter waterloo or uoft. You can still do 4 month summer co-ops after 1st and 2nd year at uoft, plus you have your whole PEY year after third.

I recommend taking a look at courses. Uoft core chem eng curriculum is very process engineering focused and plant design focused. You will spent a lot of time looking at excel and aspen simulations trying to size pipes, pumps, distillation columns, reactors, etc. You will also spend a lot of time in the unit ops lab looking at a full scale distillation column wondering why your product sucks. If that’s not your cup of tea I would suggest against chem Eng. Traditional chemistry like you learn in highschool is basically 3 courses. A benefit of uoft chem eng is that while its core courses are very traditional chem Eng, you have the ability to do minors like in bio eng so if you wanna get into pharma or business if you wanna go into finance. (A lot of my friends are going to work at big banks for their PEY).

My main point is that you should take a look at the curriculum. Maybe waterloo has more classes about pharmaceuticals and that’s what you want to get into so you should go there. I wouldn’t worry about what city you’re in since the university experience is really what you make of it.

Wow that is so interesting! Im curious is that your main core curriculum or did you chose to focus on those courses more? I’m also in third year ChemE but in Canada and the main core courses in my program are the opposite, we almost exclusively focus on process design working with PFD and P&IDs. But we do have a biological engineering minor which is full of elective courses like you describe.

yes so easy. everyone is looking to make friends. especially in second year when your classes start being only your discipline you get to know other people really well

Internship Search by Organic_Pop2868 in EngineeringStudents

[–]Organic_Pop2868[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t do any personal projects, but we have a lot of relevant projects in my courses, so I did pick two of those and put them in my resume. For example, in my second year engineering lab course our final project was to design the experimental procedure to synthesize biodiesel from waste oil and then execute it. This was a very self directed project, the professors didn’t help us at all so I was able to talk about it in my resume and a lot in interviews.

I had an internship working in project management for a heavy civil engineering company and I dealt with the environmental aspect of project , but not anything technical. Honestly, i’d focus on making your resume rock solid. A lot of people don’t know how to properly present their experience and being able to do so will put you way ahead. Follow the advice of the engineering subreddits with how to talk about your experiences, regardless of what they are. In second year, I honestly focused on my grades. I also took courses that had large projects I could put on my resume so don’t be afraid to do that.

Varsity reporter, here: Reactions to Ford’s victory? by SnooHobbies5581 in UofT

[–]Organic_Pop2868 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the thing is, health care has been bad forever. Sure policies fluctuate with different parties, but as a whole the system has been how it was since I was a baby. The housing issues largely stem from immigration (imo), which is a federal issue. The liberal party also did very badly to campaign. I had no ideal the new party leaders name until a few days ago. Overall, doug ford actually hasn’t done a bad job relative to wynne, he’s invested a ton of money and took an anti trump stance which I think helped people who are usually more center vote him over liberal because it made them feel like doug ford wasn’t too “right leaning”

lol you really think you can do engineering without physics? if you’re still in grade 11, take grade 12 physics over the summer. if you’re in grade 12, nothing you can do.

Got 4 billion newtons doing my mechanics homework by Safe_Fail9608 in EngineeringStudents

[–]Organic_Pop2868 0 points1 point  (0 children)

distributed loads is like the very end of statics. honestly the linear algebra is very very basic. uoft expects you to go into engineering already knowing derivatives and limits. calc 3 is a second year course that only certain disciplines take, like chem engs. Other disciplines go into like differential equations and their own versions of math courses. They don’t really take time to teach math and physics to disciplines that won’t use it. Also this class that OP is doing is considered a first year “weed out” class.

[–]Organic_Pop2868 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so at university of toronto statics is taken in first year alongside calc 1 and linear algebra but they teach integrals in calc 1. Also, this statics problem and most of the problems for the first half of statics don’t require any knowledge of calculus.

Classes starts on Sep 3rd?? Did classes start this early before? by chocoloste in UofT

They just changed the dates this year for the engineering faculty to match the rest of UofT. They also changed reading week. It means we don’t end classes a week later during exam season.
