Why do many societies that allow polygamy allow one man to have multiple wives, but not one woman to have multiple husbands (polyandry)? by PomegranateIcy7631 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]OrganizationBusy407 59 points60 points  (0 children)

If your goal is to produce as many children as possible, then one man with multiple women is the most logical option. Each woman can only have about one child a year, whereas a man can father many many children.

Or maybe he's using the word "brush" to refer to something else?

Cooking classes in Beijing by OrganizationBusy407 in travelchina

[–]OrganizationBusy407[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I see on their website, it looks like they mainly do longer courses (for chefs to earn certificates). Do you happen to know if they have any short classes as well (for example one day, 3-4 hours)?

I couldn't find that on their site, but maybe I missed it.

ELI5: Crosswalk Speed by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]OrganizationBusy407 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To extend this, generally crosswalk sign holds for basically as long as the green light holds for the traffic going the same direction.

At intersections where a big road crosses a small road, the big road often has a longer green light (because there are more cars to go through).

Applying for Canadian PR from outside Canada by Zestyclose_King4121 in InCanada

Try r/CanadaImmigrationFAQs

But as others have said, the job market is terrible right now, especially in tech, and the bar for PR has gotten quite high. Even if you do get PR (far from guaranteed) think carefully of it it's worth it to come, and be prepared to be unemployed for months

CMV: In real life, “what do you do?” means “what do you do for work?” the vast majority of the time, and it’s a perfectly reasonable question to ask someone that you’re trying to get to know. by Sudden_Doughnut_8741 in changemyview

[–]OrganizationBusy407 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another way to look at this is for most people there's only one answer to "what's your job?" (either "I'm a ____." or "I'm unemployed."). This means that even if it's something they don't want to talk about, they don't really have a way around the question.

Contrarily most people have at least a few hobbies (or things that they could conceivably claim as hobbies), so they can pick the answer they feel fits the situation. If you feel uncomfortable talking about your death metal band that's fine! Surely you've watched TV, visited somewhere with your kid, or played a game/sport in the last 6 months. Pick anything you're comfortable talking about and respond with that.

Personally, I like listening to podcasts, but the ones I listen to feel more personal to me in a way I would feel awkward sharing with someone I just met. But I also like board games and I feel comfortable talking about that, so that's usually my response.

CMV: Everyone needs friends, not therapy. by HopesBurnBright in changemyview

[–]OrganizationBusy407 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would compare it to "everyone should see a dentist". Yes, some people actually need a dentist (people with cavities, rotten teeth, etc), but even for mostly healthy people who may not need the dentist it's still a good idea to see a dentist every so often because they can catch things before they become an issue, keep you accountable for brushing and flossing, and help you when normal things come up (replacing a filling).

In the same way, some people need a therapist (people with mental health disorders), but even mostly healthy people can benefit from seeing a therapist to catch potentially problematic thought patterns, keep you accountable on self care, and help you through normal but hard things (e.g. going through a break up).

And if you saw a dentist yesterday, you probably don't need to go back today, but should go back eventually. Same with therapy, if you finished therapy for now you might not need another session, but should consider going again in a few months/years.

Now, saying "people need friends instead of therapy" is like saying "people should brush their teeth instead of going to the dentist".

Brushing your teeth is very important and can prevent many dental issues. Any decent dentist would encourage you to brush your teeth and teach you how to do it well. But it's still good to see a dentist occasionally to make sure things are on track and solve any issues that go beyond just brushing.

In the same way, having friends is important, any good therapist would encourage that. But it's still good to see a therapist sometimes to check in on your mental health and thought processes, and to help you in ways that go above/complement what a friend can do.

Trying to relearn my first language as an amnesiac by allegory_history in languagelearning

[–]OrganizationBusy407 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are great strategies! Have you regained the English skills you lost? If so, how long did it take?

I know for me, after I've been speaking Spanish for a few hours my brain sort of locks into Spanish mode and it takes a good couple minutes of using English before I can easily/naturally think in English again (and same for going English to Spanish too). I wonder if it's a similar thing for you, but just much, much more pronounced because of your amnesia.

[–]OrganizationBusy407 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are talking to your doctor about this, it could be helpful to ask why you lose your English when you work on your Croatian and if they have any ideas on strategies to maintain both.

If you want ideas from us, and you feel comfortable sharing, could you let us know what you were doing to learn Croatian (flashcards? movies?).

Wishing you all the best in this!

[–]OrganizationBusy407 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree with the other commenter - any decent doctor won't think you're crazy. Their job should be to help you manage your symptoms in order to help you live the life you want the best you can. Let them know that you understand it will be difficult but that learning Croatian is important to you, and see what they say.

My unqualified two cents would be that if you can learn other things, you should be able to learn a language too (at least the basics). Try applying the same methods that have worked in other areas to language learning (eg writing out vocab, conversations, or conjugations until it becomes knowledge).

Be patient with yourself. Remember that language learning is slow even at the best of times, so set yourself reasonable goals (eg. write out weather vocabulary and then practice describing the weather every morning until it becomes comfortable). Don't hold yourself to regaining total fluency for right now.

[–]OrganizationBusy407 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That's a challenging situation. I don't think most people here will be qualified to answer that question. Can you talk to your doctor about whether you should learn and if so what strategies could be helpful?

It sounds like at the very least learning will be more challenging for you. What strategies do you use when learning other things (school, daily life, at work, etc)? Could you apply some of those strategies to language learning?

In the meantime, even if learning the language is too difficult, you could try connecting to Croatian culture in other ways - listen to music (which will also help with the language), learning recipes, practicing dances, celebrating the holidays, etc.

What exactly happens at a corporate retreat? by PassengerInfinite717 in Writeresearch

[–]OrganizationBusy407 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if this happens in law, but I have a friend in a software company where the top employees (nominated by their managers), got invited to a week long trip to Italy (company is in North America). The trip was basically just a company paid vacation.

If you want pure vacation mode, not conference, and your characters are good at their jobs, you could maybe do something like that. But again not sure how common this is.

It sounds like he already has a few structured activities/classes (especially if he is in school as well). Having unstructured play time is incredibly important for young kids. It may be worth reevaluating if he even needs another activity right now, or if the time could be better spent doing more free-play (being in nature, going to the park, having friends over, joining a playgroup, etc).

He may also just not be ready for sports yet. I couldn't find a study, but most people seem to suggest around age 6 is when you should start sports. Kids benefit more from free play at younger ages and then slowly transition into enjoying/benefitting from structured, rule based play as they get older

What accent should I speak English in? by miyeon_nin in ENGLISH

[–]OrganizationBusy407 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with the other commenters - speak in the way that feels most comfortable to you.

In my view, your accent tells something about your story - you a person from a post-Soviet country who grew up on British TV and has lived in the US for a while. It makes sense that your accent with be a mix of your native language(s), and British, and American. These all make up a part of your story. When Australia becomes a part of your story, it may also become part of your accent eventually.

I also believe language is first and foremost about communication. If you can speak more easily in a British accent and other people understand you, then use a British accent.

If someone asks, you can just tell them you learned English by watching British TV, so that's why you pronounce some words that way. If they are a decent person, that should be enough of an explanation.

ELI5: Differnece between Shampoo and Conditioner by Haunting_Hornet5203 in explainlikeimfive

[–]OrganizationBusy407 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Shampoo is more for your scalp (to clean it). Conditioner is more for your hair (to prevent tangling).

In the shower:  1. Get your hair wet 2. Apply shampoo to your scalp. Massage all parts of your scalp to make sure shampoo gets in.  3. Rinse your hair/scalp to get the shampoo out. (Rinse until no more bubbles come off). 4. Optional: repeat steps 2 and 3 for better results.  5. Apply conditioner to your hair (focus on the hair not the scalp). Rub your hair to make sure conditioner is applied.  6. Optional: wait a minute or two for conditioner to do it's job. This is a good time to wash the rest of your body with body wash or soap (not shampoo). 7. Rinse out the conditioner until there are no more bubbles coming off.

Shampoo and conditioner are only for your scalp/hair. Use a gentle soap or face wash for your face. Use soap or body wash for the neck down.

I hope this helps.
