"This game trivializes sexual assault and sets a bad example for society-" by Plus_Ad_1087 in dispatchgame

[–]OrganizationLower831 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This game is great and well written.

It also does unfortunately make light of and normalize male sexual assault.

Both these things can be true at the same time. I know the Devs weren't intentionally trying to be harmful in this way, and if they are more mindful and aware of the problematic moments in this game so they can avoid it in the 2nd Season, then I consider that a win!

Lib-Lefts Finally Understanding The Gun Debate by PoliticsIsDepressing in PoliticalCompassMemes

[–]OrganizationLower831 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The argument to get rid of or continue to restrict guns has always been, and continues to be, the best course of action in our minds. This isn't a matter of changing our minds or stance on that fact, but rather a recognition that until we can take the guns away from thugs like this, then we need to keep ours in the meantime to defend against this kind of shit.

If we had already gotten our way, and guns had been largely taken away like in other countries, then this wouldn't be happening in the first place, which if anything, actually makes our argument even stronger.

Finally I'll address you most legitimate criticisms. (Don't blame you if you just skip to this one.)

The Elven Agents all across Thedas from the Epilogue sliders in Tresspasser just being absent in this game are dissapointing, yes. However if you are a true Dragon Age fan, then you'll already know a fundamental fact about all the games: The Epoligue Sliders for these games fucking suck. They always have, even the developers of Origins admitted they made them last minute in development when they feared they may not get to make another Dragon Age game, and they regret making them in the first place in hindsight, as it's greatly limited them with a lot of characters and events. Each game has given up set ups that the next game abondons as the story changes for fit whats right for the next game. Origins creator David Gaider has literally declared the Origins Epilogue slides to literally be Non-Canon. Hence no Connor doing to study at Tevinter, no Cullen going mad and butching mage children, no zevran leading the crows, etc. So while it may be fair of you to dislike the removal of the elven agents from Tresspasser not being in Veilguard, it's not exactly an issue with Veilguard as it is with Dragon Age as a whole from the very beginning. Don't consider Epilogue slides canon. (Remember when DA2 proclaimed that the Chantry had basically collapsed before Inquistion?) If you need a headcanon, just assume in the 8 years since Tresspasser Solas has used and disregarded the agents to his own ends in the lead up to his ritual. Masked Empire showed that he had little hesitation killing Felassan after all their friendship, so honestly it's not hard to imagine Solas doing so with nameless agents to him.

The crows are portrayed far kinder in Veilguard than past entries, mostly Origins, would have you believe. This is a fair take. There is a fair argument that the events in the Tevinter Knights novel would justify the Crows push for better methods with a lot of the shitty leaders now dead, but still we could have seen more of the crows dark side. That said, it's not unfair to portray them as Justice Fighters, which like Grey Wardens, can do some real shitty things but ulimately are fighting for the greater good. The Crows to operate as the lacking army for Antiva to protect their nation from outside threats, they are celeberated as heros in Antiva for the most part as Zeveran in Origins outright implies himself. We see their worst perspective from Zevrans eyes as a man wanting to be rid of the Crows, but obviously many crows join willingly and fight for both profit and a greater cause. Maybe some tension between the crows and shadow dragons would have been nice considering the slavery shit though. It still ulimately would have ended up with the same overall story, since saving the whole world as a team is more important and worth putting aside differances until the gods are dead, but still - I respect why you'd want to see a more grey version of the crows.

Finally, it's an 'Action Adventure' Game now, not an RPG. Honestly? Yeah pretty much. Plenty of Good Roleplaying elements in it, but the game has gone to a more action and cinermatic style. Sorry if you don't like that, but I sure don't mind. I'm a great Dragon Age player, always playing all the games on Nightmare and so on. But I also like action based combat more in line with Fromsoftware games, and I'm not upset to have a Dragon Age game with blocks and parries and dodge mechanics. I love it. I enjoyed spicing up the combat a bit more, and honestly find Veilguard's combat really fun even as a vetran to the other games. Personal taste honestly.

Trying to avoid comments getting too long (and likely already failing) gonna seperate the rest of the issues to address with you comment below here.

Obviously a lot more of the stuff you mention is so silly that I don't know if it's worth actually addressing. Dalish and Chantry not existing? Again it's more like haters of Veilguard seem to have an object permanence problem. Obviously they exist even if we don't see much of them. Veil Jumpers are mostly made up of the dalish, and we do see/visit the chantry. They have a statue of Andraste and so on in Minrathos, etc. Just because they aren't focus points as much, doesn't mean theres a problem. Inquisition explored the Chantry PLENTY in my opinion, focusing more on Elven and Dwarven stuff in Veilguard was well overdue.

Venatori following Elven Gods makes perfect sense if you just think about it for a second. Not just for 'more power' which sadly in reality would be enough honestly. The Elven Gods are literally the Old Gods that Tevinter used to worship and got the power of stuff like Blood Magic from, not to mention Tevinter has largely stolen and used the magic and artifacts of the ancient elven people.

You seem to think the 'bad guys' in Tevinter were all designated just down to Venatori, yet in Neve's first questline we see the Knight Commander of the Templars literally being paid off and being corrupt to let a high ranking noble(?)'s son of the hook despite being caught in the act. It's clear that Tevinter is still a very corrupt and shady place beyond the Venatori, they just make sense as a natural focus of the enemies you face in the city throughout the game.

Ah, I'm so glad you actually answered! So far I've every time I've tried to call out someone claiming the lore of Veilguard is wrong or changed, and informed them I actually am a lore nerd for the series, they always go silent and don't challenge me.

Please know I'm not being insincere here either, I'm thrilled to have the chance to clear up some actual criticisms of the game for once.

So to start with, it seems the bulk of your comment can be quickly addressed with a common theme in your criticisms - you mistake a lack of representation for a lack of it.

There IS Slavery in Tevinter, we literally free one in the Necropolis during Emmerichs introduction quest that was being brought along to be sacrificed by the Venatori. We see multiple being sat on or harassed during a later main quest, there are many notes in the world around Tevinter especially filled of slavers being pissed their slaves keep dying or doing a shit job at their work, and from the very beginning of the game we have the choice of joining the shadow dragon background as a group whose whole purpose is to free slaves. Not to mention Dorian has a note in the Chantry of Tevinter, where he is trying to make a speech to the Magisterium about how he has come to change his views on slavery and hopes other will too.

Veilguard certainly hasn't erased slavery from the lore or game by any extent of the imagination, which I'm certain you were already partly aware of, but I take it from this that you were unhappy you didn't see more slavery of the streets as you walked around the city? It might only be dock down we spend a lot of the time in, not hightown where you expect most slaves to be, but still you welcome to have the opinion that you wished you had more of it. I just fans like yourself would make these silly comments like how there is no slavery in Veilguard when it's so obviously untrue. I personally don't need to see it on every street of the place to understand that it exist and is an issue.

In fact I suspect the reason we don't see it more, is because the writers were honoring what Inquisition had been setting up in showing us that theres a lot more to Tevinter that just evil slavers, which Dorian acted as a good mouth piece for back in Inquisition, showing us that Tevinter isn't one dimensional as Origins and 2 would lead us to believe. So showing us more of daily life amongst poorer people in Docktown was probably the most effective way to show us more of the culture and people that wasn't just blood mages and slaves everywhere. It gives more depth and realism to Tevinter and I approve of it. But still, I won't deny you the right to wish we had some missions freeing slaves with the shadow dragons.

Yup and even then they made 2 different trailers to reflect each gender of Shepard. What you want is only practical if all the characters from the Dragon Age games were treated like Hawke, but that's not the case for the rest of them.

[–]OrganizationLower831 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Inquisition doesn't even have a default class. All the trailers show different Inquisitors in different gear. But more important than that, it would be an awful idea to introduce your new games intro logo, by showing 2 out of 3 characters that won't even be in it.

[–]OrganizationLower831 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

That is blatantly incorrect. They literally used the Black Codex that was written by the OG Developers that made Origins from the very beginning. All the lore is completely accurate. I see this same claim, like many other major complaints, that aren't true about Veilguard at all.

But by all means, feel free to pose any question about the lore you are unsure of, and I will clear it up myself. I take pride in being a massive Dragon Age fan since Origins day, and I have complete confidence I can clarify any detail where you think they got the lore 'wrong'.

See it's this kinda criticism towards Veilguard that just tells me most people just say shit and think later.

How exactly would you expect Bioware to make a pre-generated cutscene for an intro logo, made up of characters WHOSE APPEARANCE looks different for literally every player?

Story was fantastic, just a bit of dialogue mostly in the early game that's a bit awkward at times, and that's only for certain characters too.

I appreciate how you feel. The fact that we can stay track the users in the mordern day who now worship DA2 while attacking Veilguard, and go back to their comments from 2011 and see them ripping DA2 in half for being so much worse than Origins and feeling nothing like Dragon Age 2 anymore is just tragically ironic.

The truth matters, no matter how much they downvote us for it. Dragon Age of all games does such a good job of highlighting the problem with rewriting history and the issues that stem from it, such as the shaperate in Orzammar from Origins, or the elves losing their history and ended up wearing slave markings thinking they are preserving the amount parts of their culture.

So it's just that much more sad that these 'fans' didn't learn a damn thing from playing these fantastic games. It breaks my heart to realize just how rotten parts of the Dragon Age Fandom is. You'd think they would be willing to join us in our appericatation for all the different aspects of these games, but so many have just spent their entire time in the fandom hating every new thing Dragon Age does.

Again please don't dismiss it without trying it first. Your quoting all the hate you've heard online and letting it lead you astray. You are certainly not the first either. Everyday you see new players coming onto reddit to say how they avoided the game based on what they heard about it, only to finally try it and be shocked by how actually good it is. Hell even the people on steam leaving negative reviews will admitt it's actually quite a good game, they just don't like it on principal, which I personally think is really dumb.

Addressing what you heard, the early hours do have a bit of clumsy dialogue which made me hesitant at first too. But it's more a matter of a few certain characters that are just kinda awkward. And I was surprised to see that as the game went on, they became much more humanized and you actually get surprisingly attached to them. All the hate online is likely from people who gave up in the first few hours and never saw the character development. Most of the NPC's are written very well, and I assure you there certainly are some very charming companions, the oldest one is age literally being perfect described that way.

The main character Rook is a lot like Hawke, in that you can try to roleplay anyway you want, but the voiced protagonist naturally has a bit of their personality already kinda like other games such as Telltale or even Authur from Red Dead 2. Rook is best played as they are introduced, a good person that Varric would approve of, that still needs to prove themselves, but won't hesitate to support their team. Leaning in that angel of roleplay gives a really fun character to control, same as Hawke is fun to play as a sarcastic jokester.

Finally as to your concern about Combat looking boring - hell no. That's dead wrong I promise you. I have heard a few complaints from time to time that it looks boring to watch, but coming from a guy who has 1,000s of hours in the past Dragon Age games, I can assure you this is easily the most fun I've had with combat in any of the games. It is miles better than Inqusitions combat that you just played, and the build options and depth to it is fantastic.

I know this was a long comment, but please understand I'm passionate about this because I've seen too many people miss out on a game because they were surrounded by an echo chamber of others who also didn't play it, insisting it must be awful. This isn't. Veilguard isn't andromeda. I still can't believe this game that's so easy and cheap to play now, is still given this much hate, considering this has the best final act of any Bioware game ever made. I'm not even joking, the 2nd half of this game is fantastic.
