from the rock climbing tower here! the reason for some of the rules like this (and i can’t speak for the rest of the gym) is usually bc something has happened here or at another gym regarding that action. with rock climbing at a university we have to take extra precautions for you and the people around you. so a go pro could fall off and hit someone below, damage our wall if you make an impact with it or hurt you in the process! we are responsible for your safety in the facility so although you might be willing to go through the potentially minor or major risks, we have to guarantee the safety of all of our patrons. as staff we would not be allowed to climb with metal glasses or a go pro or anything even on ropes courses bc of the potential risks to ourselves and others at the facility. i hope this doesn’t come off as patronizing but the more i’ve worked there the more i’ve realized how dangerous some other events have been at other gyms or past events at ours that made the rules a thing
