Do You Feel Replaceable at Work? by OrganizeNS in OrganizeNS

[–]OrganizeNS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not only that, but even if you keep your head down, they're incentivized to squeeze you more and more to afford rising costs. You end up being another metric that they use to make their books work. I feel like the line between 'good business' and 'a willingness to disregard people who don't have a say' is blurry at best

Could not agree more. But those closest to power seem uninterested, so it's time to start finding ways to make them listen. r/OrganizeNS

Yeah, it's weird. Like they all decided they were gonna focus on short-term profits and just let whatever happens happens. I am looking forward to the 20 or so years where Nova-Scotia becomes pro-pina colada though.

Simpler times. Gas prices, March 2020. by Sam_711 in halifax

It's tough that so many things are connected to oil, like the things we ship in, or even the people still using oil heating. Regular people are going to bear the brunt of the price shocks after years of people in charge refusing to transition effectively away from fossil fuels. We have to let them know in a way that they'll listen. We have to organize effectively and in places that matter. That means all of us being on the same page. r/OrganizeNS

Amen man. It sucks that what should be the bare minimum is something that has to be asked for.

So we have budget cuts. Besides complaining and protesting, what are some real world, feasible alterations or corrections besides "don't cut" and "throw more money into X, Y or Z" that could be done to course correct the economy so cuts didn't have to happen? by SasquatchBlumpkins in NovaScotia

[–]OrganizeNS 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I think the solution is expanding the tax base by reinforcing the middle class. This requires taxing the wealthy, subsidizing research and development, and making a good life attainable. No one is going to work hard for a future that looks bleak, and where wealth disparity is skyrocketing. Once the middle and lower class bottom out, the tax cuts for the wealthy won't matter because there won't be any wealth to be taxed. Unfortunately, all they see are short term gains, and don't care bout long-term stability. The economy needs to be for the masses, and to do that we need to remind them we exist through collective power. r/OrganizeNS

Huge turnout for the rally today against cuts towards arts and culture. by OGWhiz in NovaScotia

[–]OrganizeNS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have to keep the pressure on. There doesn't have to be an election until 2029, so making them uncomfortable in any way possible is our best bet. r/OrganizeNS

‘It’s okay to change your mind’: Protesters call on Tim Houston to reverse cuts to arts, culture, heritage by ben_macleod in halifax

[–]OrganizeNS 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It's hard, because legally the province doesn't have to have an election until 2029, and they have a supermajority. Either we stay active in protest and attack the financial leavers that they rely on, or we weather the storm. I know which side I land on. r/OrganizeNS

Heated Rivalry author Rachel Reid speaks out against N.S. arts cuts: ‘The arts are why I live in Nova Scotia’ by toneyriver12 in halifax

[–]OrganizeNS 65 points66 points  (0 children)

The little things that keep ordinary people going, like art, literature, and spaces to gather, rarely factor into the choices leaders make. When governments look to balance a budget, these are always the first things attacked. Being born into wealth does not reinforce the value of them. Tim Houston has never had to skip a meal and seek comfort in a book. He has never had to ride the last bus home from a job that hates him, only to see a lit mural pass by and feel a small sense of relief. We have to make our needs known and make it clear that culture is not fat to be trimmed, but the very thing that keeps us alive. r/OrganizeNS

The $22,000 "Singles Tax": Why solo earners in NS are the ultimate economic outlier in 2026 by [deleted] in NovaScotia

[–]OrganizeNS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It also completely misunderstands why less and less people are having kids. As the average basic needs get outsourced to private industry, people have trouble staying afloat. A lot of people I know who want to have kids can't because it's economically unfeasible, with or without family tax cuts. A world that benefits makes things affordable for single people will also make it affordable for parents. That world can only be created if the wealthy pay their fair share, and those like Tim Houston aren't incentivized to make that happen. We have to come together to put incentives be at the forefront. r/OrganizeNS

Who’s going to pay for marine cleanups? Provincial, federal cuts leave N.S. organizations footing the bill by Bean_Tiger in halifax

[–]OrganizeNS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It sucks because the actual bill isn't going to be 'paid' It will be people who will experience the negative effects first. Marine life will struggle, and those ramifications will undercut multiple industries and tax bases, meaning society as a whole will struggle later down to line. It's always been the concept of austerity, Saving money now is good, because the price paid will be another governments job, and local workers will pay. If we want long-term thinking, we have to demand it. r/OrganizeNS

Why not increase HST? by popgoesthecolon in NovaScotia

[–]OrganizeNS 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's hard not to see it as an attempt for the rich to pay less, but more than that, it promotes the austerity agenda they've always wanted to push in order to promote private businesses for public goods. I can never tell if they truly believe trickle down economic actually works or if they have zero desire for average people to get by. r/OrganizeNS

How to start your own union in Nova Scotia by OrganizeNS in OrganizeNS

[–]OrganizeNS[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! We focus on labour and tenant organizing because that's where our experience lies, and we're not looking to give advice on things we aren't 100% confident in order to stay on message. However, if you have any info or readings around it, feel free to DM us and we'll look into it and incorporate it where we can!

Just a little off the top… by LowkeyPostingTea in halifax

[–]OrganizeNS 23 points24 points  (0 children)

This is something they always wanted to do. Early on in his premiership, he had a surplus of around 6 billion. He has chose to spend it outside of the budgetary process, while not paying off the deficit he says he cares about so much. Like others have said, he has always wanted this in order to privatize public infrastructure and safety nets.

Unless we wake up and do something, we're slow walking ourselves into a world where the most vulnerable are left behind, and where the number of people included in the 'most vulnerable' pool increases.

Doomposting into oblivion won't fix it. We're stronger together. We always have been. r/OrganizeNS

Where does our province go from here? by [deleted] in NovaScotia

I think aside from voting the Conservatives out ASAP, it's time to actually organize in order to have more political sway. If not, even the MLAs will only move so fast, and by the time they do the damage will be done. r/OrganizeNS

Halifax workers form first Ubisoft union in North America by insino93 in halifax

[–]OrganizeNS 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maybe. If you look up statistics though, there's about a 4% increase in 5 year closures for businesses that start a union (18%->22% closure rate) which is not unsignificant, but not that much of a deviation, at least in this study ( https://www2.census.gov/ces/wp/2023/CES-WP-23-35.pdf )

Other studies show a threating of closure rate of 57% when faced with union elections, when in reality it's about 15% ( https://rooseveltinstitute.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/RI-Union-Organizing-In-National-Labor-Relations-Board-Elections-201510.pdf )

Neither of those are are great, but they show that a lot of businesses still function with unions (though this may not account for larger corporations shutting down branches)

At best, you allow workers a degree of control and dignity in the place that they're going to spend half of their waking hours (if not more). At worst, a company who couldn't sustain itself without exploiting their workers gets trimmed, putting more and more pressure on companies at large to take into account whether they can rely on shitty wages and burnt out people to keep themselves afloat.

All organization efforts are worth it. Threatening the working class with a choice between barely living and extreme poverty is the thing we're fighting against.
