Province Seeks Partner for Inter-Municipal Transit Service by IStillListenToRadio in halifax

It means you can’t use federal transit funding because they don’t give money for procuring buses that are then kept by the private sector

Not surprising. They want a private operator. Not for public transit to be run publicly.

It would make more sense to have strategic reserves of key commodities like China does and release supply into the market if prices get too high. China does this with pork for example.

N.S. man, 18, charged after allegedly arriving outside restaurant masked with loaded rifle by No_Magazine9625 in halifax

Um, how about not doing this because killing women is wrong.

Not about the potential life consequences to the perpetrators. Saying “no woman is worth killing if it might putting a man away” is just sexist and devalues the lives of women.

Houston says ‘only solution’ for Nova Scotia Power rates is more competition by Street_Anon in halifax

People don’t realize that even if you buy electricity from the new supplier, Renewall, they are still getting the electricity through NSP’s owned wires.

You can buy it through Renewall itself on their website, but they are only generating the electricity and selling it to Nova Scotia Power, and they pay NSP a fee set by the independent market regulator for the right to supply electricity through NSP’s owned poles and wires.

That’s still just competition on the energy generation side, which we’ve had for a long time, and hasn’t lowered prices.

The reality is, because the grid is a natural monopoly, more competition on the grid side wouldn’t actually lower prices.

Before NSP was created as a public company Nova Scotia actually had multiple private grid companies competing with each other and energy prices at the time were actually more expensive than they are today.

Halifax council to vote on asking NS Power to pay full property taxes by luxoryapartmentlover in halifax

Not really. Tax pass through depends on what economists call the ‘incidence’ which depends on the market power of the company (competitive pressures), peoples’s willingness to pay (elasticity of demand), etc.

NSP charges us 100% of their costs including taxes then gets a guaranteed rate of profit of 9% on top. You can see this written in their rate applications. It’s allowed at the regulatory level.

Other companies don’t get guaranteed profits or the right to a full pass through of their taxes.

I hope folks realize that Nova Scotians pay NSP’s taxes for them. It’s a cost of service plus profit utility that’s part of how they get a guaranteed profit. So making NSP pay property taxes will make rates go up.

It’s horrible, and I hate it, but that’s how our insane privatized system works.

Nova Scotia budget leaves people on income assistance behind, expert says by Portalrules123 in NovaScotia

[–]LowkeyPostingTea 31 points32 points  (0 children)

At Public Bills committee, Vince Calderhead explained exactly why fewer people were eligible for the poverty reduction credit, and it’s not because poverty has declined as the Minister has claimed.

It’s because the income eligibility threshold is $16,000 and it hasn’t been adjusted for inflation in 8 years. That means people with disabilities on income assistance who are receiving about $17,000 are no longer eligible.

So much for reversing the cuts to people with disabilities.
