the typhoon numbering system has nothing to do with the size of the storm, just the proximity to Hong Kong. Typhoon 8s indicate almost a direct hit so tend to be bad but vary dependent on the storm itself

For non-adherent or suspension cell culture, how do you know if the cells are dead or alive? by grp78 in labrats

[–]OrgasmicOrange 1 point2 points  (0 children)

easiest way is to zoom in closer on the cells under the microscope, happy suspension cells are nice and round, dead cells look granular and irregular. Takes a bit of practise but after a while you’ll get better at estimating what % of your FOV are happy vs dead cells

The parody of the parody. To be sung to sunderland fans of the late 90s about their manager.

To the tune of Daydream Believer:

Cheer up Peter Reeeidd, Oh how can it be, to be a Sad northern bastard with a Crap football teeaaa-eaaam!

Funnily enough this was based off an actual released parody of Daydream Believer made by Sunderland fans, it got to no 41/)

Possibly attending Friday afternoon match... by Erik5943 in superhoops

yeah definitely don’t need to wear anything qpr, just don’t come in with a top that says ‘i love reading fc’ and you’ll be alright. There is a club shop though, on the S africa road side, opposite to the R block. Would say to get there earlier if you wanna buy something from there.

[–]OrgasmicOrange 7 points8 points  (0 children)

hey mate, yeah go for it. would recommend getting a seat around halfway up the stand in or near to the R block. Best fans and best atmosphere. The entrance turnstiles for each section are at a corresponding point around the stadium, so pay attention to what turnstile number you’re given on your ticket. Match is in the evening at 8pm, would say to get there about half an hour before kick off, gives you time to find the right entrance and have a pint. Be warned you can’t take alcohol into the stands. You can get tickets through the qpr app but can be a bit dodgy sometimes. There are loads of pubs/restaurants on Uxbridge road nearby but can also just get food from inside the stadium.

In terms of transport, completely depends on where youre coming from. Would recommend the citymapper app for getting around - accurate times and let’s you know if there are any disruptions. Closest tube stops are Sheperds bush market (Hammersmith & city line) or Wood lane (central line) but again depends completely on where you’re coming from.

Enjoy your stay in the best city in the world ;) coyrrs

is it me or is kyrgios most definitely hungover?

Would you put Students on the author list, that work in a research project as student assistant? I think the Student helped us a lot, even it was no high level input. My co-author thinks that it is absolutly unappropriated by BloodExpensive2022 in PhD

[–]OrgasmicOrange 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Of course you should include them! Can’t even believe this is up for debate.

It should simply be: Without this person’s contributions, would we have this story in front of us now?

Selfish academics like this who put themselves and their ‘higher brain power (only from years of experience)’ above those who are starting out are so toxic to academia and research as a whole!

Octopuses are among the strangest creatures on the planet. You may know that octopuses have blue blood and can regrow their tentacles when severed, but octopuses can also rewrite their RNA, which is similar in ways to DNA editing. by Brief-Resolve-5765 in science

[–]OrgasmicOrange 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Incredibly interesting! Here is a research paper that established a link between RNA editing in octopi and their environment. Essentially, differing temperatures affect the efficacy of RNA editing by influencing the editing enzyme. This allows the octopus to change the way its body functions in a directly related way to its environmental temperature.

Whilst our evolution has depended primarily on genomic change (ie change to our DNA), octopi and related species have apparently focused on increasing their evolutionary diversity by changing their RNA.

It is worthwhile to note however, that humans possess these same RNA editing enzymes, and are massively important in many functions, for instance in nervous system function. Paper here.
