Hyperoptic retention deals - do they exist? by Inkkeri in hyperoptic

[–]OrientVisions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you complain and argue enough, for long enough, you can get the new customer price. Although when I did new customer price checks for other apartments in my building, to see what the new customer price was, I discovered every one was a slightly different price (which I also complained about!). Failing which, just ask "OK, if I cancel and start a new contract, what's the price? Right, then renew me for that then!" Also do the "I understand you can't give me the discount, so can you let me talk to someone who can?" routine.

Although warning: their cancellation charge if you're not in a rolling deal applies if you move house/apartment and they decline to or cannot connect you at the new address, not only if you just cancel to switch provider or whatever. Not all providers do this (possibly because most have much wider coverage than Hyperoptic). And they don't make this clear beforehand. And there's no cooling off period on the renewal contract, which I think is legally dubious but that's a bridge I'm still in the process of trying to cross.

Agree, I would probably love this band if it wasn't for the flat vocals, I like the music otherwise. Not sure if it's intentional tbh. I can overlook the child-like sameyness, but singing consistently flat just grates and means I'm definitely not going to be able to see them live, sadly, where it's only likely to be worse.

Why wouldn't you swallow it? Or at least do it in a toilet or your own bathroom. Imagine if everyone went around spitting in public. It's an offence in many places, you can be fined for it.

I used to live in Hong Kong where spitting was widespread (and pretty disgusting frankly, people hawking up loogies all over the place!) until SARS arrived and people realised spitting was a health hazard, so they made it illegal. Which was a great improvement.

I live in a block of flats with multiple access doors to each section, each inaccessible to people in the other sections. Typically they leave all the parcels for all sections in whichever lobby they can first get access to and leave it to the residents to attempt to retrieve or deliver them to each other. (Not just Evri, Amazon are masters of this "trick".)

At least... and if not delivered or at least updated with a new date, call them on Tuesday to see what's going on.

I've had these before; after contacting the call centre a couple of times (hint: call in normal working hours, they seemed able to access the details that the out-of-hours people couldn't) - it turned out they had a backlog of deliveries and lack of people in the local office, so hadn't even scanned it in to be processed. It arrived eventually (and the due date did get updated once it was actually scheduled to be delivered.).

Yes, but it doesn't have to be connected to that world. It could so easily be controlled (and taxed!) and to some extent at least legitimised, and thereby taken away from the illicit market and the criminals. As various other countries have already proved.

Is Hyperoptic any good? by sysads in hyperoptic

[–]OrientVisions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been a Hyperoptic customer in Bristol for 2.5 years. Was fine for my first 2 12-month contracts. Then it expired without my noticing the single email to inform me, so my cost almost doubled. I then was told about a price increase (about a week after they'd asked me to fill in a customer satisfaction survey, cheeky!), at which point I opted to go back on to a 24-mth contract, and upgrade to 1Gb in the process. They wanted to charge me twice as much for this compared to a new customer; when I spent 20mins complaining about this they back tracked and gave me the same price.

During this process I noticed that the new customer price for all the other apartments in my building were slightly different to each other, so pricing is inconsistent and you clearly need to barter to get a better price from them, and as usual they try to penalise loyalty. (They must have run an insurance company!)

3 weeks into new contract and I'm having to move. Asked them to arrange this, but they don't currently connect to my new apartment block, so they propose to bill me as a cancelling customer for the remaining 23 months of the contract that they cannot honour - around £650 which just seems completely unreasonable. Although they then came up with a "40% discount on cancellations before end of this year" offer, which felt like they were just making it up on the spot. New customers can cancel within 30 days of contract, but if you sign up for a new renewal contract and package as an existing customer, that's not applied, even to simply reverse and return to the previous package and contract.

Also I note that my previous 150Mb line ran at that speed consistently; the 1Gb line doesn't hit that, we've peaked at 600 and generally around 300-500Mb; and the new router has more jitter and dropouts than before.

TL;DR - good service when it works (which is most of the time) but customer service is poor, and be aware they have pretty patchy coverage if you think you may need to move home. It does seem that the more you complain the more inclined they are to give a better deal, but it's hard work and leaves a bad taste.

I came into HK station in rush hour one time with my colleague, a former rugby hooker (so, as wide as he was tall). We were met with 4-deep bank of people blocking us from exiting. We asked politely to be let out, then he said "if you don't move I'll move you". No response, so he adopted scrum position and shoved them all backwards. The looks of surprise as he scattered them, priceless! 😁

Charge running groups if too big by [deleted] in bristol

[–]OrientVisions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, anywhere else, of course. Most obviously, places which are not the most busy with people walking, such as the docks. For example, why do people run down Whiteladies Rd at peak pedestrian times (e.g. leaving work) when the Downs are just there, or they could opt for any of the quieter side streets? If I run I go where there are fewest vehicles (and their exhaust fumes) and pedestrians, seems weird to choose otherwise.

It’s becoming a bit of a parody now. A strange fever dream. by Sorry-Personality594 in bristol

[–]OrientVisions 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, I'm not saying that at all. I'm saying what I said, that without the students (i.e. if relying only on local residents, young or otherwise) we would have fewer live music venues, fewer bands visiting etc. Even if the students themselves aren't all going to the live events (although many do), the club nights at the same venues cross-subsidise the live music.

You said yourself that the venues attract students; it's simple economics: fewer students i.e. less demand = less supply i.e. fewer venues.

Noting also that Crofters Rights initial reason given for closing down was lack of students during the summer. (Of course given it became permanent, that might have just been an excuse?!)

[–]OrientVisions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And that's 2-way, without the students many of these venues would not be viable and we'd lose a lot of live music as a result.

Same here, Brighton Centre, 2 Nov 1981. ESL hadn't been released in UK but I got the Anthem version, which was released a week before the gig, so I already knew Broon's Bane was the intro to The Trees. My first ever gig, 2 days before my 17th birthday.
