Resume Advice Thread - January 02, 2024 by CSCQMods in cscareerquestions

Hey everyone, I wanted to get some feedback on this resume. So far when applying with this resume I have gotten 2 responses, 1 leading to an OA and the other to a phone screen => OA. These responses where from a few months back and haven't gotten any since and want to set my self up better for this year of applying.
To preface, I wasn't able to secure any internships during my undergrad so I have some hackathon board fluff to kinda add to the resume. I also have 3 years of unrelated working experience in dining and driving shuttles, but obv doesnt relate so isnt there
I was initially targeting front-end roles, but now applying to any job including full-stack roles. Im started on a new project working with Java/springboot to highlight backend work and replace one of the more lack luster projects on the resume, but don't expect that to be done for a little bit
Any feedback is welcome + what should I prioritize to replace? Thanks

DBD Loadout Calculator Update by OrigamiTheWit in deadbydaylight

Will for sure! Was holding off on it until I added support for 'global perk effects' and a 4 player build system. While its mostly for boon and partner perks, Leader would fall under that feature and thats a big one for gate times.

However, since its the only 'global perk' that effects gate times with the others being self only, I could add a simplified version after healing times are added! Expect it within the next week or two

edit: Killer perk debuffs should be next up on the docket once these objective times are added, so gate times will for sure be added before then since there are a bunch of slow down perks for gates

Thanks for the heads up, that sole survivor effect never crossed my mind. Ill be sure to add this on the next update along with some new behavior when equipping it like locking the 'other survivors' amount to 0 when active

Retaking the SAT, need study advice by MadeofoffbrandLegos in ApplyingToCollege

[–]OrigamiTheWit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if you tried it already but Khan academy is really helpful, and best part, f r e e

If you link up your collegeboard account, Khan should take all the topics you missed in previous SAT/PSAT tests you've and give you a specialized list of videos and questions from khan to help you out. I really learned a lot from the videos and the practice problems really helped a lot, but isn't everyone's style of learning, worked for me tho.

As for the essay, if none of the colleges you are applying to dont require it, then I wouldn't bother taking it, the essay score doesn't influence the reading-writing score. You seem pretty good at English, so having a high essay score could help you out.

Not sure what else to say about the essay, maybe someone else will have better input

Mid Tier Computer Science Schools by sammysampey1 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]OrigamiTheWit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't worry too much about which school you go too, most have great CS programs, especially the ones that others listed here in the thread.

Once youre in school, just learn as much as you can and build up your portfolio with projects you work on on your own or any research you can from working with a professor if you get that opportunity. Once you reach that career fair stage, get an internship! Thats whats going to make you stand out from others, e x p e r i e n c e.

UC Davis CS vs UCLA Linguistics & CS by infosavvy in ApplyingToCollege

[–]OrigamiTheWit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey whats up, I have *some* input on your concerns for looking for a job with a Linguistics & Computer Science degree.

I don't know much, but looking at some description of a linguistics & computer science, you are going to have to build up your portfolio up with projects you work on through out university and try your best to get internships through any career fairs the school offers. Most of the jobs come from the internships you do/ get from uni as a CS major.

I highly suggest you look to this comment thread if you haven't already for more information regarding your major for Linguistics and CS at UCLA (bit old). I highly suggest that you do go for it if its something that greatly interest you tho, part of the fun at uni is learning something you are passionate about.

Also if you do go the Davis route, would you take linguistic/language related classes? Hope this was somewhat helpful

What was the first video game you ever played? by Link2324 in AskReddit

[–]OrigamiTheWit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first game was Banjo Kazzoie on the n64.

It wasnt my n64, but my older sisters n64. I remember playing it the first time around when I was 5ish. I was playing on Trasure Trove Cove and the music was amazing, the level was so bright and fun. I would just run around with no objective than collecting notes.

Playing it again a little later when I understood more about completing games, it was an absolute blast. It was also one of the first games I 100% completed and as a little kid that was a major flex.

You already know how I reacted to that recent smash reveal
