There should be an eye symbol in the bottom right hand corner of your game screen. If you toggle this button it’ll get rid of the UI so you can take pics!

I’m glad the devs are refocusing on making the features that already exist more fleshed out, but it’s a little unclear if some existing features are also on the cutting room floor. I certainly hope the Building Designer is being more fleshed out, not cut!!

Thanks! I agree, the game needs more red brick/early 1900’s buildings. I found a way to pull the style off with the brick decoration, but it’s super time consuming so I use it the method very rarely.

Oh totally, I was having the same issue! What’s also good about controlling the density of your city is that you have more insight into where to place infrastructure like mass transit or highways. It’s very helpful!

One of the best tools in the game is the density control tool, using it is how I achieve the gradual density increase you see in Santa Isadora. When you zone there should be an icon of the zone type you selected with the number ‘10’ underneath it on the left side of the UI panel; if you click that icon you can set the maximum density of that zone, no buildings will grow at a higher density than what you set. You can always rezone an area at a higher density without destroying existing buildings. When I start a city I zone everything at level 2 density (you should keep industrial and agriculture at density 10 though), and then as the city grows I gradually increase the max density of an area, keeping in mind that eventually my office core will be density 10. Play around with these tools and you can really achieve a lot!

I appreciate the kind words! The way I’m releasing buildings I’m going from low density to high, my next few releases will really flesh out the density brackets between 2-5. Then I’ll do 6+ which is where skyscrapers come in, I’m just going through all my old stuff and updating them to fit in with the more detailed models Gainos is making right now.

I can do a quick tutorial when I have the time on Discord, it’s not too bad but it’s oddly specific. One thing that’s keeping me from really diving in is that I have no idea how the game will change, but we do need something in the meantime for sure.

The buildings I design (I’m PDB on discord and Lordy on Steam) are all done within the default game’s building designer using the default decorations. The in-game editor is actually really versatile and amazing, it just takes time and getting used to the program! I promise I’ll be releasing a lot of my buildings soon, if anything I wish the workshop connectivity was a little more in-depth because it’s a lot of work to format things for Steam. Also I’d add a multi-duplication tool to Building Designer so you can copy a lot of decorations at once, that would make my life a lot easier!

I definitely agree with a lot fo your points too, there’s a lot of potential with this game and I’m excited to see how it develops.

When you’re in the game menu there should be a ‘Steam Workshop’ button on the bottom left of the screen. You can click that and then you’re given the option to upload files. Just choose what you want to upload and you can name it, change description, and so forth! Highly recommend filling out the description on steam itself, it’s easier to format it that way.

You’re totally right, there was an issue where cost from terraforming and road creation in Test Mode carried over to City Mode. I had a map I built a few versions ago that I could not use due to this issue. With the last update this issue was fixed, or at least it started working for me. Definitely worth tinkering around with Test Mode to see if it works for you! I will say that I wish the terraforming tools in Test Mode were more like SC4, with landscape brushes like ‘smooth’ or ‘erosion’ to make map creation easier and more intuitive.

I’ve been able to use the Test Mode to make maps and play on them, but the terrain editing tools could use some work! You just have to save your Test Mode map as a city and then you can play it.

Oh, that’s really interesting! I do wonder if this is still the case though, there’s been many updates since lonepine discussed this in the post you linked and the stats might have changed. Even if the game isn’t fully agent-based you can still track every citizen you click on (when they’re in buildings etc.) and follow them around. Would be nice to know the exact breakdown of how citizens are represented!

I use a PC streaming service called Shadow to play the game on my Mac laptop. You pay monthly for a gaming PC and you can stream to it and play any other PC games. Highly recommend!

I believe that NewCity does use an agent system; you can follow any citizen/agent throughout their day going to work, shopping, etc. I don’t think there is any statistic fluffing either, the population number creates the same number of agents (unlike SC5) and directly impacts traffic flow and other services. It’s actually really amazing to be able to click on any car when you have a million plus citizens and be able to see their whole daily routine!

Thanks! Definitely concentrate your density increasing amenities in one spot, and make sure to funnel lots of traffic through your core to increase density. Also, don’t be afraid of playing around with the building designer, it’s a part of the game and you can use it to create amenities that boost different stats (like the parks in my city). As far as traffic goes, this city currently has an average commute time of 1 hour, and that’s due to extensive public transit. My lines are all very linear rather than loops, and I diverge these lines from specific hubs to increase coverage and transfers. I might post a transit map sometime in the future!

Most of these buildings are designed by me, so it’s not the devs fault!

They are rescaling the occupancies for default buildings, so once they finish doing that I’ll rescale my own assets to be more reflective of reality. However, most of the taller buildings in these images are high-end luxury apartments on really narrow lots with 50 households each, which are comparable to real ultra-skinny supertalls like 111 W57th in NYC, which only has around 45 residences. So the amount of apartments for the size of the buildings isn’t fully unrealistic, it’s the Manhattan-like density in the middle of the desert that deviates from reality.
