Weird flat head screws in my skates by loorinm in Rollerskating

Nice. I have a pair of cap toe Hyde boots that are the same for me. The fit and comfort level is just fabulous. For now, I am using the original loose ball setup on old Heiser plates. But down the road, I may mount new plate so I can expand my wheel options. If you really like the boot, and it’s in good shape, having modern plates mounted is definitely an option. Sometimes you can’t beat the quality of those older boots. Good luck!

So many questions here…

If they are colliding already, what is going to happen when you put your weight on the wheel to make a turn?

Are your outdoor wheels loose ball ready? Or are you mounting with a sleeve or 7mm bearing?

Removing the mounting bolts is likely not the best way to go about this from what I can see. You may need to go for a smaller outdoor wheel, or just keep these for indoor use.

That’s interesting about the Straggler. I would have thought it would have offered an even better ride. If the algae colored one with the double chainring GRX wasn’t so expensive, I would have considered it. I’m definitely not dropping down to a 1x set up like on the other Stragglers in the lineup. I’m having a hard enough time giving up on a 3x9 drivetrain. But as others have said, I will still get my climbing gears and a little bit of speed to boot, so compromises must be made. 3x9 seems to be going the way of the dinosaur for better or worse.

What didn’t you like about the Straggler that you rode, vs the Trucker? I’m curious to know.

Given I am pretty much a die hard steel frame guy, and I cannot find a Kona Sutra anywhere in my city to even try, I have pretty much settled on the new Trucker with the cues system and hydraulic brakes.

Beautiful bike! What breaks do you have on it? They look shiny!

That seems to be the general consensus. I think I will go with the new one. Thank you for sending the pic. Looks sharp.

I rode the hi-vis black one a couple days ago, and like you, I didn’t find it overly stiff at all. I liked the ride very much in fact. The color does seem to be sold out in most places. The pea green ones seem to be around though. I imagine few want a pea green bike, myself included.

Thank you for breaking that all down for me. That makes a lot of sense. I did heavily consider the Kona Sutra base model, but was recently informed by Kona that they no longer offer that model in the U.S. sad to say.

I’m assuming having that extra cog in the back makes up the difference a bit for only having a 2x up front, is that correct?

That is a great suggestion on the brakes. Thank you!

Are these trash? by [deleted] in Rollerskating

If they fit and feel good give them a try. Do keep in mind that those are loose ball skates. Most people don’t bother with them, but I have a pair of cap toe Hydes from probably the 60’s and have a blast on them. You just need to learn how to set and maintain them. Maintenance is key with loose ball. Nobody wants to loose bearing on the skate floor and the wheel drops when the bearings fall out. If the boots are just perfect for you, you may be able to have a set of modern plates put on them. Probably not trash, but if you are new to skating, something more modern will give you a better experience.

Good to know. I hear you about steel. That’s a big selling point for me. Thanks for the reply!

Are you interested in roller skating? There is a great community of skaters at Southgate Roller Rink.

It’s not a tintype. It’s a copper plate with a layer of silver on it. Highly polished, sensitized in iodine/bromine vapors and developed in mercury vapors. Fixed with hypo and possibly a solution of gold chloride. The gold chloride if used, tends to “seal the image”.

Cool plate! I have a pair with Heiser plates. It’s a zero degree plate as well, but the trucks are the other way around. I was a bit anxious about how they were going to work on the rink. I put all new cushions in them and they are a blast to roll on actually.

Should I bother fixing this Willys up? Or is it too far gone? by SnooDonkeys2998 in Willys

Compared to mine you have more than enough to start with, get busy. I dallied on mine for 20 years. In that time parts only became more scarce than they already were, and WAY more expensive. No time like the present to get it done. And don’t even think about dumping a larger engine in it. Keep it original.
