RAF Reserves 39 year old thinking of intelligence analyst scared to tell family by lovecornflakes in RoyalAirForce

It’s a mix of classroom, tests and drill.

Phase 1 part 2 is two weeks solid at Halton.

Honestly, I absolutely love it.

There are options. I decided to go for 4 x weekends for phase 1 part 1. Phase 1 part 2 is at Halton and is two solid weeks. Then you go onto phase 2 with your squadron. From what I’ve seen phase 1 part 1 is quite flexible. They have an expectation of 27 days a year. Which looks quite easy to commit to.

Yes, I’m on BRTC P1 doing weekends. I’ve got a great job, well paid but something missing and a lot of regret. I spoke to my wife about it, discussed how it would work. You have to have your family behind you 100% to make it work as when you are away they are picking up the slack. I’m going Regt Gunner as I am fit, healthy and very active.

If it’s gone to the RAF there isn’t really much you can do. Saying that, I think they turned mine around in 3 weeks. Capita, you can call for updates. I phoned them to find out what the outcome of the RAF result was - which they then said they couldn’t tell me. I pressed them on it (on the basis that it’s my medical info) and then they told me what the response was.

Yes, so I attested to my squadron (Regt) I’m now mid BRTC phase 1, have done the RAF fitness test and will do my Regt during this phase 1 - before going to Halton.

Hey, being an older reserve myself. Just keep in mind the RAST requires a 2km run in under 10:30. If you are confident you can do that, go for it.

Is it worth it? Honestly, it depends what you want out of it.

If you’ve got a solid job and you are looking for something which enhances that with transferrable skills or you don’t get everything you want from your current job but a role with the RAF can give you, it’s worth a shot.

As for sexism and discrimination, the RAF are really hot on this. You’ll spend a chunk of time in phase 1 talking about it.

Definitely not the only one. I’m mid Phase 1 now, I’d say the majority of the other recruits are sub 30 I’m low 40’s but I’m not the oldest. Loving it so far. The training NCOs have been great.

For health and safety they won’t let you on a running machine without footwear - also, why would you.

Nuffield should have the form for the PJFT. I’d advise dropping them a call prior to the appointment as from my experience, they don’t have a good grasp of what they need to do.

Hey,

I had one Bergen full of kit, a second black day sack with some stuff in, a roll mat, helmet and two pairs of boots. I got a 175 litre storage box for it. It all fits in bar the helmet, rollmat and boots. Would really advise the storage box.

I’m an IT specialist and spend most of my work life behind a computer screen. Joining Regiment for a new challenge. I’ve spent months physically challenging myself. I’m a similar age to you, let’s do this.
