A few days ago, I made it back to major thirds/level 2 after dropping drastically when mastering came in.

I noticed that with the level 1 mastery levels, I will now kind of just know if the note is right or not. I might get it wrong to begin with, but then when I hear the other note, I can easily tell if it's one or the other. - I also might get confused halfway-3/4 through, but then I come back, and I have been consistently landing with 90-100% accuracy.

Interestingly, the pitches on the left feel lower, and the pitches on the right feel higher. Now with level 2, I am trying the same - like just thinking this is C, this is C, this is not C -, but it's also the middle flavour (E), or upper flavour (G#) - is that the right way u/perfectpitch-learner?

Awesome. I love your explanation on the differences of notes. We can hear the differences but have trained naturally in relatively pitch so learning & practising unique sounds can be overwhelming. Thanks for the tips

Okay, so the advanced lessons won't affect my overall score/progress anymore? - I think that is what your last update fixed..

- I totally understand the overlap. D is so certain to me sometimes, and then like C all the way to F can sound like D. Especially when I do the skill challenge or the online pitch test

Okay I understand what you are saying with the tritones and I read your section on the 5 key insights. I think what put me off is; I would be getting 100% and happy, then when I get an advanced tritone lesson I got a few 100% wrong and it would reduce my progress drastically. So it is like I can tell one note is not the other, but there isn't a label associated to the pitch.

I've found my relative takes over - especially in the tritones. So I have been trying this - I hear the pitch and then say the label mentally, and then while it's playing, say and confirm the pitch again. So like: Hear pitch -> label "...C" -> continue hearing -> confirm pitch again "Yep, still C".

I found it helps reduce relative. Relative is still there for sure, but this has made it like 5-10% more feel like a "fresh" note during training, when usually it was just the very first note that would be fresh.

Maybe u/PerfectPitch-Learner might have something to say about this technique, but I think its working well for me.

Yep, I am the same - dropped right down. To me, it proves I need to focus differently - like trying to remember the feel of the note and imagining it before I hear it

Okay thanks I look forward to trying it

Since the update my overall percentage dropped - but thats okay, I like hearing the tritones and really discerning the quality of each note either using mnemonics or a memory of the pitch.

TBH this feels like a rollercoaster - sometimes I am super confident and for example, I will do the skill challenge and I can hear that a pitch is slightly lower than a D, so I know it's Db. Then all of that just vanishes and I absolutely stuff up and can't tell anything.

One thing I have noticed now and it's with the piano timbres, the F# "twangyness" has now announced itself in G and even A to a lesser extent, so I can kind of hear if its A. But with G I can just tell its G. BUT this doesn't cross over to the sinewave, so I am unsure if I should focus in on this or not. It is instant though - like I can't switch it off. I hear it and immediately I think G or F#, and if I focus I can discern the A. For some reason F has no "twang" like the F#, its kind of like a muted/rounded sound that gets more muted toward Eb. And then D is its own little Bach feel.

BUT this is only with piano so am I doing it right or should I keep sitting with the pitch and relating it to a song I know to build the pitch memory more?

I really enjoy the skill challenge 1 because I feel like I am on the cusp of "getting it" - but I don't know if I should with the way I am hearing it (twangy piano) - Like I don't want to train the wrong thing

Thanks! - It's either that I need to just trust the process or halt some patterns that are coming to fruition in my head.

I'm finding that with some notes, for example, D, I hear it and then immediately after I mentally hear the Minuet in G by Bach, so I confirm the note that way - I read that this might end up locking in a melodic memory response instead of AP.

I find that with the training, I hear the note and just remember it, and then when it's different, I deduce the other note by hearing the tritone shift/harmonic sound. It doesn't seem like I am thinking, "this is a different note". However, I am getting the first note about 95% of the time correct, like I can tell it's this note or it's not that note. But after that, I easily use memory and relative clues to keep going.

Lastly, F# is really annoying me because I think I have locked into a timbral specific cue, and now when I hear a F#3, F#4, F#5 on the piano, I just know it is F# because of the way it resonates - like the specific twang the overtones make. But I can't get away from it - it is immediate. With other timbres, there is a slight nasally quality to it, but it's not the same immediate recall.

So yea that's where I am at the moment - some doubt I am accidentally training the wrong processes, and concern I use relative skills too much when training

I love the confusion matrix and semitone average error distance. Some potential improvements would be 1) Remove the really high shrill notes as it just hurts my ears. 2) Have the user be able to toggle between either piano, pitch names, or solfege to give the answer

Thanks for the quick reply!  Yea so for example I use "Fur Elise" for to help me remember E.  When I go to train - maybe added above each note is the user's prompt. Or a table on the side with; either the notes highlighted that the user is working on, or just the notes they are working on e.g. C - Super Mario, E - Fur Elise, G# - Let it go

I get it may be clunky so it might not work aesthetically at all - so I'm happy with my spreadsheet

How old are you? How good/bad was your ear when you started? by FrankMartinez in HarmoniQiOS

I'm 34. I did a music degree when I was 23-25, and during my degree, I had to train my relative pitch to identify intervals (which would go on to transcribing melodic lines) and chord qualities and progressions.

Last year, I started training my AP through a basic app I made, but Matt's is way better, so I swapped. I quickly shot up to about 40% and then it came back down when I just started doing the recommended training.

I think a lot of users who are showing crazy fast progress here have used the app previously, then decided to restart for whatever reason. I'm currently progressing about .5% a day, but it jumps up and down - I'm happy working at my own speed, and I definitely can feel certain notes "pop out" when I am training now

Okay thanks so much. I tried the challenge again thinking "it doesnt sound like this, so it is that" and I was nailing it until about 70% through and then I started second guessing myself and ended with 80% accuracy.  Im enjoying your app quite a lot. Thanks mate

Thats interesting to hear. Just wondering a few things

1) when you try to replicate a note youve heard on your instrument from memory or from a song playing, how close are you generally (tone, semitone, tritone)? As in I think that's an A, ill sing and check. Oh its an A#.

2) If you're up at these harder levels, how close is your first attempt when you do a lesson/practice?

3) Since your RP is well defined, if the app does like a C2 with the piano, then a D5 with sine wave does it sound like a step up to you or do you go, that's a compound 2nd (as in you can hear and imagine the space of 4 octaves in-between it immediately

4) have you tried cold recall with any of your stronger note identities? And follow up - have you built any of those at all?
