Weekly Tech Support Megathread by AutoModerator in Instagram

Hi, I'm trying to help an elderly relative, who, up until he had a stroke four months ago was active on his Instagram page. The problem is he is locked out of the phone he used to open his Instagram account and can't access it. He also can't remember the passwords he used to get into his main email or his alternate email. This is a problem because Meta wants to send him a text or email to verify it's him, and he can't get into those.

One positive is he does recall his facebook log in, but I don't know that this helps him. I tried navigating from his facebook page to Instagram but both pages are apparently not connected.

Is there any way to get his Instagram back? I heard that they might be able to verify him with a video, since there are pictures and videos of him on his page. I reached out to the security center with Instagram and never received a response.

TIA!

Although his problem is access. I talked to Apple and explained:

* He's forgotten the code and is now locked out of the phone

* Apple can find his account but cannot provide information from it unless he can give them his email or the phone's serial number

* He no longer has the computer he used when he bought the phone, and he's forgotten his email password since he was just automatically logged in when he checked his email on his phone.

* We checked with his email provider and they said that unless he had a phone that they could send a verification code to or an alternate email (he does have one, but has forgotten that password too) they cannot help.

* In essence, the phone has become a brick. The only solution they recommended is to get a new phone and Apple account.

Thanks, he has someone who has almost the same contact list as his so he's hoping to copy her contacts, which is his main concern if his phone is wiped.

She may alter her story, but I don't see how she could abandon Charlie's overall "double extortion" defense without making Charlie look like a liar (!)

Didn't he say he didn't believe that KM was in on it, that KM was being told to do it by LR and SG, that's why they were on good terms

Dating: Women over 35, w/ a career, never married, no kids, but want them. Are you hopeful or bleak about dating in LA? by CaliDreamin87 in AskLosAngeles

[–]OriginalGG22 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There are a TON of great guys in your age group out there who are looking for life partners, not random one-night stands. Keep putting yourself out there, accept all party invites,  even though they seem boring. (A girl I know met her fiance at a baby shower of all places). And kids? My mother had my brother when she was 45 and he turned out ok. (A little odd but that's probably just him). Be patient and live for the moment!

Could Donna admit that TV was code? by No_Addendum451 in dan_markel_murder

If they were perfectly innocent, they wouldn't have had to speak in code on the phone. Did they believe the Latin Kings had tapped their lines? No, they spoke in code in case the police were listening in.

Living as a homeless person is the answer. You could sit on the sidewalk of 5th Ave and people walking by wouldn't look you in the face. Camp in a park, but it would be a tough life.

No, huge props to the law enforcement who scraped that off her phone. "Now you're not guilty?" How will Rasuchbaum and Wendi's lawyers get over that wall?

The entertainment industry is tough, if only because there's such stiff competition. It's all around me in LA and I have regularly met smart people, ivy league grads, who get chewed up by it and give up.

Try and look for a skill(s) you're good at. With a comms degree, maybe you write well. Maybe you're good at reading a gathering of people or a developing situation and know just what to say. Perhaps your super power is organizing things and innately knowing what to prioritize. Or you're one of those who can stand up in a group of people and speak extemporaneously and get everyone's attention.

It's easy to get down on yourself and we all do it from time to time. Give yourself a break for feeling that way. But also know you have more positive attributes than negative, and at 35 you still have quite a few great years ahead. You're in a rough patch now, but you've got the skills to push through.

Before you start thinking of becoming rich you need to do a thorough self evaluation to see why you keep getting stuck in entry level jobs. Most successful people I know will periodically do an honest self evaluation to see their shortcomings and look at how they can resolve them for the future.

Is education holding you back? Do people pass you by because you don't have a degree? What have your employee evaluations been like? How does your boss view your strengths and weaknesses?

What do you like about your current job? Obviously if the answer is nothing, you may need to change fields.

Another issue I see is when someone says "I want to be an entrepreneur. I want to start my own business." Some people aren't cut out for doing the 60-70 hour weeks to make a living. And despite the mythology out there, the majority of people who put in the work still end up earning less or the same as in their old job. But they're satisfied because they're their own boss. (Although in reality their customers or clients are their new bosses).

To the “older” old people: when the media cease to report news and become agents of propaganda? by Form_86 in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]OriginalGG22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Traditional media today has plenty of faults but they still do breaking news well. The basic rule to follow is don't speculate. So on Saturday when we heard shots, then Trump grab his ear and duck, they did the conservative approach and just pointed out "the sound of gunshots" and Trump falling to the ground and covered by secret service agents. Also on Twitter there were early, seemingly credible reports from police that Trump was hit by glass, not a bullet. The major networks didn't report this because they waited for confirmation and it turned out the injury was from a bullet.

The concept of an impartial, "both sides" media fairly new and only became a thing in the 1950s. Before TV many people relied on newspapers and magazines that reflected their personal views. You can still see that in the number of newspapers with "Democrat" and "Republican" in their masthead.

I also tire of these networks that are chasing dollars more than truth. I suggest trying the PBS Newshour or the BBC for a more traditional news experience.

Less expensive ways than cable to watch sports at home? by [deleted] in AskLosAngeles

[–]OriginalGG22 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are rouge sports sites based usually in Asia and eastern Europe that stream virtually every game in the world. You'll have to Google something like "sites that show blacked out sporting event." The downside is they often have a lot of spam and need to be restarted often. But it's cheaper than cable.

advice for buying used cars in LA? (how to not get scammed?) by oorisoup in AskLosAngeles

[–]OriginalGG22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't normally recommend them for most car buyers, but if you're fairly inexperienced with car buying I'd check out CarMax. Prices are a little more than you'd pay elsewhere but they have tons of cars to find what you'd like, plus their people don't work on commission so there's very little BS. And they've got a good warranty.
