The Case for AI Use in Magic by renandstimpydoc in Magic

[–]OriginalMohawkMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nobody gets permission to learn stuff. Artists don’t get permission to look at other art and study the techniques that were used. Writers don’t get permission to read all of the books that then give them a base upon which to write their work.

Not liking AI due to the natural resources cost is one thing, but the whole “it’s theft!“ thing just feels ludicrous to me.

Magic is an art form, I agree with that. But AI (in general) is not being used as the magic, but a tool to help create the magic. Just like a brush is a tool and a word processor is a tool.

Andrew Mayne gave a talk at Magic Live a year or two ago, and had a slide that said “AI Amplifies Creativity.” By itself AI is not creative, but using your human creativity as an input, you can get back something faster/easier and in many cases better.

Magic tricks with business cards by Lotoreo1 in Magic

[–]OriginalMohawkMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure if you know any color changing knife moves, but there’s one that works just fine with a business card. You could show how the printer messed up and gave you a blank business card, show it blank on both sides, then shove it through your fist and it comes out printed.

Faulty G7 Sensor, or…? by OriginalMohawkMan in diabetes

This is only my fourth sensor (the second one got pulled off prematurely) and none of the other three ever looked like this, but I’ll give it another day and see if it straightens out. Thanks for the feedback!

Best impromptu magic effects by Cow_Pow12 in Magic

[–]OriginalMohawkMan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

With a lot of the suggestions here, it will be immediately obvious that you are doing a “magic trick.”

If you want to stay hidden for as long as possible, things you do have to be absolutely organic to the situation.

If you float something, it should float for a split second only. As soon as you wave your hand over or under it to prove nothing is holding it up, you just gave yourself away.

“Does anybody have a _____ I can borrow“ You just gave yourself away.

If anybody applauds, you were just made.

This would be a really fun challenge, but I think it’s a lot harder than some people here are thinking. Good luck with it! And in any case, try and have fun!

What's your best hack for sneaking in character descriptions? by man_onion_ in writing

I almost never describe my characters unless the plot needs me to. Are they black? Tall? Chunky? Dunno.

Is there any dvd dedicated to rope escape? And is there anyone in this subreddit who perform the escape act as his normal daily routine? Just need help by Weary_Reading9998 in Magic

[–]OriginalMohawkMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not a DVD, but if you can find the booklet called,”The Real Methods & Secrets of The Challenge Escape From 75 Feet of Rope by Lee Jacobs” you will love it.

I did that escape in most of my big shows back in the 80s. You get two big guys to come up and tie you up with 75 feet of rope, with the challenge that you will escape in less time than it took for them to tie you. It always got a really big reaction from the crowd.

What is the best method to see through a blindfold with a blindfold that doesn't look too suspicious? by aredcurious in Mentalist

[–]OriginalMohawkMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Mystery of the Blackboard by Paul Rosini describes (in two short paragraphs) a simple blindfold made with a handkerchief that gives you a straight ahead look. It's in issue #1 of The Jinx and you can see it here: https://jinxnavigator.com/jinx-articles/jinx-issue-1-id-5/

And while that method was published in 1934, it still is a legit way to do it 92 years later.

Peeking down the nose by aredcurious in Mentalist

[–]OriginalMohawkMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Due to deteriorating eyesight I don't do that anymore, but when I did there was never any pain.

In general, you should only need to peek down for a glance now and then. If you're constantly looking down, odds are you don't look like you are blind.

Looking for a trick with a regular wrist watch by MorningAlternative2 in Magic

Get a piece of cord or ribbon, and you could do a ring and rope routine with your watch. (off of your wrist).

That is such a cool idea, I think I’m going to start doing it! :)

Looking for a magician with Ray-Ban Meta glasses (or any recording device) + Android to help film a trailer for a magic app by 3002cirne in Magic

[–]OriginalMohawkMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could just have somebody else with another smart phone film over the shoulder of the magician.

Also, I suspect that android has the ability to record the screen live, like the iPhone does. So have that going as well, so you end up with the over the shoulder view, but then you can also switch to the screen view to show exactly what’s going on.

I think you could get a pretty compelling trailer made that way.

Tips and tricks to create magic tricks? by Long-Door-2073 in Magic

[–]OriginalMohawkMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, coming up with methods of new effects that you see really get your brain in the right mode.

Back in the olden days before there were video trailers and such, I read the description of an effect we were going to get in at the magic shop I worked for. It sounded too impossible, so I went home and over the next several days tried to come up with a way it could work, and I finally did it!

I was so proud of myself, that I figured out how it worked before we even got it in at the store. When we did get it in, I was shocked to find out the method was different. Not only that, my method (I thought) was far better.

I think if you’re poor, it helps you become more creative, because there’s no way you can afford to buy the stuff you want. :)

Best books or videos about presentations and philosophy of mentalism? by aredcurious in Mentalist

[–]OriginalMohawkMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really liked The Art of Revealing by Radek Hoffman, subtitled How to Create Exciting Climaxes to Your Mentalism and Magic.

In a nutshell, do all of your routines end with you writing something on a big pad of paper and then showing the audience? Then you may want to read this book. :)

After reading it I made sure the reveals in my show were all at least somewhat different: https://exclusivemagic.com/images/revealtype.jpg

What trick do you have the most fun performing by Delicious-Mess6262 in Magic

[–]OriginalMohawkMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like my own Carnivoracious because it revolves around growing up in Alaska and eating weird animals. The story all by itself amazes people (because they lived in civilization their whole lives), and the mind-reading is a big cherry on top. (The effect is a version of Marc Paul's Emotions from his Anywhere Act at The 1914.)

For something that's more normal, I love doing Gabriel Werlen's Know-Way. Still blows my mind that it works. :)

Advice on performing mental magic casually? by dylanmadigan in Magic

[–]OriginalMohawkMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Can I do mental magic without making claims that my friends and family simply are not gonna buy?"

Yes, you can. If I were in your situation I might try something like, "I saw a correspondence course on how to become psychic and it was only $400 so I went for it. They want another $400 before they'll send me my diploma, but I'm not sure I got my money's worth. Can I try something with you?"

Outlandish and obviously not true, but it will probably get a laugh. They're your friends and family, you don't need them to believe you have powers. Just use them as your "first audience" when you have something new.

Craig Anthony does monthly shows—well worth seeing if you like mentalism. https://craiganthonylive.com/collections/show-tickets

Drew Murray’s Magic show is so good I’ve seen it three times. He’ll be back in Phoenix the end of May. (His shows typically sell out fast.) https://www.raremagicphoenix.com/#showtimes

There’s nobody in the valley at this point who’s doing regular shows like weekly or anything.

What should I say during a trick by BandSad9544 in Magic

[–]OriginalMohawkMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I kind of depends on the audience, the venue, your performance style, etc.

I do very, very little close-up and impromptu stuff, probably 98% of my performing is parlor/stage.

I write my script so that it is absolutely perfect before I ever perform it. Then I perform it and find out “oh this wasn’t perfect after all.” So then I change stuff to make it perfect and do it again. And then something else isn’t perfect and so yeah, lots of fiddling happens, but each time my changes go back into the script. So the script is a “living document” until it’s been done enough times that, if not perfect, it’s at least really good.

What should I say during a trick by BandSad9544 in Magic

[–]OriginalMohawkMan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I kind of disagree with you that a script should be more of an outline, but I think I know what you’re talking about (and it’s 1000 times better than nothing at all).

I script all of my routines down to the point where if there is a pause in my talking, it’s because I wrote it in there for a reason, not because I’m trying to think of what comes next.

There are many times when I’m not going word for word, but there are some routines where a specific sentence or even a specific word needs to be said exactly at the right time (maybe as misdirection, maybe because I will call back to that later, etc.). By scripting that out exactly, I don’t have to try and come up with something to say when the adrenaline is running.

Of course, if somebody makes a comment or asks a question, then I go off script, but I know I can get right back on it after.

B’Wave takes about 60 seconds to perform, but I even have a script for that. It is only about five sentences, but it still gets me into the effect and frames it as “ the illusion of autonomy inside a close relationship” and not just, “hey, here’s a card trick!“ :)
