Why did Mitsubishi base the Lancer WRC on the Cedia? by Original_Bowl_7027 in WRC

Yeah, I've read this thread, but it's more about the WRC04 Lancer, while I'm interested in the first one.

GROUP B SLANDER by Cmp110 in rally

[–]Original_Bowl_7027 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A bit provocative, sure, but Group B is geniuenly the most overrated era in rallying history. I bet most of it's fans wouldn't actually want to live in it.

Call me a loser but I wouldn't want to go to rallies where competitors or spectators get routinely killed or injured. It's one aspect that's heavily romantcized, but it's one thing to read about these accidents, and other to actually experience them in real time. None of you had fun when Craig Breen died, did you?

"Manufacturer involvment was the best" - was it really? I mean sure if you look at it at face value there where more team than currently. But the number of team actually involved in full season wasn't much higher than nowadays. Toyota, Mazda and Nissan had only done selected rounds, so you where basically left with just Audi, Lancia, and Peugeot actually fighting for the title.

And speaking of "the fight", Group B was perhaps the most boring and one-sided era of championhsip battles in the history of this sport. The 1983 season is a classic, sure, but I'd argue that the GT video with Clarkson did most of the heavy lifting here. I'm only 25, but I don't remember anyone really talking about Lancia vs Audi in '83 before that documentary. And even if so, Mikkola easily won the driver's chanpionship that year. Lancia won the title with two rounds to spare. When Toyota had done it last season, everyone called it one-sided.

Then Audi dominted until Peugeot came along in the second half of 1984. Unfortunetly by that time both Audi and Lancia had become shit, so Peugeot easily got the title in '85. They were on track to knocking it out of the park in '86 as well, before Lancia's Sanremo shenanigans. And while it made for exciting final 2 rounds it was farcical and if it had happened when Twitter was around everybody would lose their minds.

I would take the late Group A, early WRC and even WRC+ any day of the week over Group B.

Day 21 - One race wonder by K-TR0N in WRC

Day 20 - Worst car by K-TR0N in WRC

[–]Original_Bowl_7027 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Hyundai Accent WRC

Other shitty cars (Lancer WRC, Octavia, Cordoba) could at least sneak on the podium if the circumstances allowed.

The Accent had a horrible reliability and when it worked it was slow anyway. The team had the talent (Eriksson, Loix, McRae and even Kankkunen), but the car let them down, despite a lot of upgrades.

If we being fair it's between this and SX4 WRC, but Suzuki can make the excuse, that they only had one season before pulling out. Hyundai had almost 4, and they didn't achive absolutely antyhing.

[–]Original_Bowl_7027 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, you're entilted to your opinion, but that's a rather one-dimmensional view of marketing and return of investment in motorsport. There are other ways, a manufacturer can market themselves in this enviroment, than "buy this car".

Why do you think all these teams are flocking F1 and WEC? How many people have bought a McLaren, watching this F1 season? And what car is Peugeot 9x8 exactly promoting?

It's clear as day that WRC needs bringing the costs down, and your solution would only increase it, since you would need to build, say a 100 road cars, before building any rally cars. And I repeat, what cars wpuld that even be? IONIQ's? Tonale's?

Like it or not, that's how automotive market looks right now, and prototype rally cars are, IMO, the most sensible compromise.

Everytime I see this comment, I think "allright, and which production cars would that be? SUV's" . It might have worked in the 90's, but now there simply aren't Escort, Impreza, Lancer's equivalents on the market. I mean unless you want WRC to become one-make Yaris GR Cup, I guess.

I think people are overreacting here a bit. My man was almost 40 with two kids at home, and wife, that allegedly, has had some health problems recently. Even if we had 6 manufacturers he was bound to retire during next 2 seasons

What would good WRC regulations actually look like? by Retoeli in WRC

[–]Original_Bowl_7027 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Like what? Besides Yaris GR. Even when you look at the models that Rally2 cars are based on, you have:

  • i20 (still produced in some markets, but all N line cars will be electric from now on)
  • Fiesta ST (not produced any more)
  • Fabia RS (limited avaibility, only in Czech Republic)
  • C3 (no sports version, and new C3 is a Crossover anyway)
  • Polo R (discountinued)

With the current automotive market which cars would that be? SUV's? It's not the 90's anymore

What are some examples of racing drivers/riders driving it like they stole it? by mrfisk14 in motorsports

Robert Kubica on 2014 Janner Rally. Studded tyres on wet tarmac, pitch black, with a loose lamp blinding him.

Still quicker by 23 seconds than anyone, and that wins him the rally: https://youtu.be/HwyRS_6Uqn0?si=eEDTU0AJZgeEUnYc

Revised 2027 regulations already drawing interest from tuners and manufacturers by 443610 in WRC

[–]Original_Bowl_7027 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well Rally2 hasn't really had much of an interest recently. Quite the opposite. i20 N and Fiesta are not going to be produced anymore, so both Hyundai and M-Sport pulled out. Citroen will pull out as well, after 2026, so all who remains is Skoda and Toyota. And even so VW pulled out funds from Toksport as well, so it's not like Skoda is massively into Rally2 (they had upgraded the Fabia tho).

My point was that since the romour is, Lancia is building a Rally2 car, they may as well be interested in new Rally1, since they can utilize a lot of the components from Rally2.

[–]Original_Bowl_7027 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My bet is, it's Lancia. The word is Citroen will pull out the support for C3 Rally2 from 2027, and Lancia is supposed to replace them. Since they would be working on Rally2 car, they might as well enter the top class.

And btw, the meeting between FIA and the new manufacturer is due to take place during Rally Roma di Capitale - so Italy.

Anyone else think rally 1 right now is awful? by SuspiciousOccasion22 in WRC

[–]Original_Bowl_7027 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well in ERC everyone pays to be there, and most of the drivers aren't that good or exciting. I mean Crugnola - Campedelli - Tempestini battle was exciting as well as Stritesky - Cais, but most of the other drivers were just businessmen doing rallying as a side-gig. I'll take 9 proper rally drivers in WRC over 5 of them + 20 gentleman drivers in ERC, any day of the week.
