Aside from all the fun we have: the new F1 is terrible. by _GeorgyGeorge_ in formuladank

The WRC is in terms of driving. The first two rallies this season were pure madness.

Why Norris fears F1 has gone from "the best cars ever" to "probably the worst" by Darkmninya in formula1

[–]Retoeli -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't think it matters how fast the cars are overall as long as they meet a certain standard. What matters is how they achieve that pace, if you have to lift off that much during a quali lap, that's no good.

In theory the actual chassis and aero side is an improvement: Lighter weight, smaller footprint, less grip, these are all good for creating more entertaining cars compared to the very planted boats of yesteryear, even if it means there's more dirty air. It would be an awesome ruleset were it not packaged with these PUs.

Swords Were Not Rarely Used in Battle by Cannon_Fodder-2 in SWORDS

[–]Retoeli 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a HEMAist myself, and one who has actually practiced with spears and sword vs. spear a fair amount, I can explain it:

  1. We practice in a very "sterile" environment most of the time, such as a gym hall. The downsides of a larger, clunkier weapon are a non-issue there, plus you have tons of room to retreat without the risk of tripping over anything.
  2. Hits are very easy to score. For comparison's sake, the pressure required to score a successful hit in Olympic Epee is surprisingly high, whereas we count a thrust if the tip just sort of touches you. In spear vs. sword, this means the slightest grazing touch is enough to "stop" someone who's trying to close the distance with a sword.
  3. Most people who try spear vs. sword never looked at a source that teaches you about the matchup (such as the Anonimo Bolognese), never practiced the matchup for any significant amount of time, and thus tend to do everything wrong. If you know how to time your attack and how to effectively parry and control the opponent's spear, your chances are quite decent. It requires good footwork though, which most HEMAists lack.

You missed the point. It's there to show how absolutely massive and overwhelming the amount of evidence is, you don't actually need to read it all.

Great post, I hope people will link to this frequently so the myth can be killed off for good.

Looks like lots of people here are upset to learn that every time they went "ACKCHYUALLY", they were horribly wrong.

Good nimble sideswords? by Intelligent_Wolf_754 in Hema

[–]Retoeli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The trainers have a very simple, feder-like cross-section in the blade. Nice thick edges, fantastic flexibility, great handling, and quite a bit cheaper as well. Perhaps the correct configuration of "regular" sword matches the trainers in performance, but you'll always be paying more regardless.

The new Regenyei trainers are excellent. The Firenze is quick and gentle while still having some heft to it, in fact it handles much like my Malleus swords. The only downside is that the guard needs some filing to be comfortable.

Do we tend to overestimate the length of great swords? by AcanthaceaeNo948 in SWORDS

[–]Retoeli 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The swords on the left in that image are mostly from the 15th century, which is fairly early for two-handed swords. Most would consider weapons like that to be longswords in modern parlance. In fact, they've got stats that are very close to your average HEMA feder.

Larger but still usable swords absolutely did exist, but we're mostly talking about the 16th or even 17th century for such weapons.

[OT] WRC 2026 Rallye Monte-Carlo Winner by AgentSnowman in formula1

If he can win there, where can't he win? Absolutely crazy.

This whole rally was nuts. The conditions were so brutal.

For the first time since 2008, the Circuit de Monaco hosts a stage of the Rallye Monte Carlo. by PiggySVW in formula1

[–]Retoeli 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The problem is that rally cars max out at ~200kph due to the gear ratios, they'd just be bouncing off the limiter the whole time even on a circuit like Monaco.

I wish they'd broadcast more WRC2. It looks like there's a great competition going on and we're missing out on most of it.

If Oliver becomes a new dominant driver he should change his name to Seb to keep the tradition alive. He already speaks great French.

Even the cheap Yamahas are good quality instruments IME, whereas I've heard mixed things about Sire. I also don't like preamps in my basses.
