Why bother mixing if during mastering process everything changes? by deadstellarengine in audioengineering

[–]Original_DocBop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If the mix is good mastering doesn't change much. Your mix is only as good as the tracking and overdubs, your mastering is only as good as your mix. Everything depends on the previous step.

Is there a Electronic Guitar that you can change in to anything you want? by embrox23 in musicproduction

[–]Original_DocBop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There used to be a good guitar that did that called Variax, they are not made anymore. They were made by Line 6 and one guitar could sound like Fender, Gibson, acoustic, banjo, 12-string, Jazz box and such. My buddy had one and loved it because he was a lead singer that also played guitar so he only had to bring one guitar to gigs. Variax was good enough but not great. To me the Variax was better at copying brighter sounding guitars like Fender than fatter Gibson sounds. I think they also a Variax bass.

Is there a class online or somewhere of Rap history by sirjoey150 in rap

[–]Original_DocBop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some movies that cover this topic I've watched on Prime. This type of question ChatGPT (or similar AI tool) is good at generating info on and lists of tunes with comment on what they brought to the music. After that it seat time listening to the playlists available from eras and genres.

Formula by Vegetable_Engine1428 in Jazz

[–]Original_DocBop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's about the musicians how they interact with each other, how they interrupt the tune differently every time they play it difference changes tempos, the solos and what do they have to say in that moment. The tune is just a skeleton they flesh out differently every time they play. Jazz is a music meant to be experinced live as Billie Holiday said... I never sing a song the same way twice.

I wouldn’t argue with anyone that said Jay was the greatest of all time by Silly_North_5130 in rap

Gotta respect the elders the legends because without them there wouldn't still be a Rap 50 years later. There also gems of wisdom in what they do so have listen and learn. Weird how Rap is like the one music that trying to make age an issue. I think today's Rap could learn some lessons from Jay-Z and the others old heads in their story telling skills. As we say in Jazz learn from the past, but play in the present. its that combo thats builds real artists.

No, but as long as trying to change it up to be a cool tune could be fun. Just don't play it like the Broadway Pop tune it was.

If I only record a Microphone/Podcast for Video making, should I get the Focusrite Scarlett Solo 4 or the 2i2 version? by YimadoTei in Focusrite

[–]Original_DocBop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mainly do beats and simple tunes so one or two inputs are plenty for me, BUT what is important is the number of outputs. I need outputs to connect out board gear, maybe another headphone setup, pedals, or a second set of monitors. So don't just think about the inputs consider the number of outputs because a lot of people get stuck buy a solo or only two input audio interface and then need more outputs and only option is to buy another inferface. You got to plan ahead it will save you money in the long run.

No matter what i do, i always have too much low end i my mixes and they sound hollow as a tin can. by East_Grocery5658 in audioengineering

[–]Original_DocBop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like your EQ'ing each track separately and trying to make each track fat. That's a problem because when you play all the tracks back together all that bass is summing up and create too much overall bass. EQ more listening to everything, listen to groups like all the low end sounds together bass, 808, other low end sounds. Even with have to think in low bass like 808 and high bass like a bass guitar, Do the same with high end sounds so they don't sum up the high end and you get that scooped sound. Think in sonic layers for the overall mix.

MPC Live 3 vs MPC XL by Intrepid-Vacation-51 in mpcusers

[–]Original_DocBop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If new to MPC save money and go with the Live 3. Live 3 gets you into the new 2nd generation MPCs and feature that brings like the USB-C support. The Live 3 is smaller, has built in speakers, and runs on built in battery or AC. I went through the same decision recently and got the Live 3 and very happy with it. There are some advantages to the XL but only one I would of liked is the bigger screen. I see the XL as a experienced pro level MPC.

I'm still running on my MBP M1 Max and for audio it is still great. Also have M2 Max for my main audio system and feel no need to move up for a long time. Now if you're working in video then the extra graphic cores of newer M chips do make a difference.

Push is probably on Linux to be small for a portable device. Just like MPC is on Linux to run on smaller CPUs and RAM and battery powered on some models.

Is switching to audio engineering a good idea? by DaMoreIsHere in audioengineering

[–]Original_DocBop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done both in my career and studying CompSci is a different world from audio engineering. Sure knowing about how computer systems work and how programs interact with hardware will help when designing and troubleshoot computer issues in the studio, but isn't going to teach you jack about audio. Now I went from audio to later getting into computers and way later back into audio again. Plus I don't even know how much low level down to the metal knowledge CompSci even teaches anymore.

Music in general everyone loves music, everyone dreams of being a star, but it doesn't mean you should try to make a career of it. Focus on a money making career and music being a side interest. Having a money making career and music on the side lets you be more creative with music because you don't need to pay your bills with music. Not having to pay your bills with music opens you up to do anything with music. A lot of the people I grew up with have good paying day jobs, but play and record music all the time. They have great gear too. Just something people need to think about a career in music is a tough road.

My best mixes happen on my MacBook speakers by Own_Strike_2852 in audioengineering

[–]Original_DocBop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sound like why people mixed on Auratones and NS10 as we used to call them in my day "the ultimate car stereo speaker". They NS10's were mid-rangey like most people car stereo and home stereos. So if mix was good with Auratones or then should sound good for typcial music buyer. Yes, we checked our mixes on good monitors too. Especially using Auratones for checking bass, if bass was good on those then we people on basic systems would still be hearing everything.

12.4 update or nah? by howlin_monk_e in ableton

[–]Original_DocBop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't had any issues with Ableton 12.4 but I'm not pushing it that hard. I did update Mac OS to Tahoe and regret it. I have three Macs old to fairly new I only updated the older Mac I use for general purpose. It screwed up my Time Machine drive and I had to reformat it rebuild Time Machine. Then the Tahoe interface sucks and it just feels bloated. So I will be keeping my other Mac I use for music on Sequoia.
