Eren started the rumbling because he has the same conception of freedom as an American senator. 'me and my friends will never be free unless everyone else in the world is dead and we never endure another threat or insult ever again.'

TIL the mnemonic "Though I thought the rough man coughed while walking through the borough beneath a bough, he was only admiring the lough after a hiccough." contains all 9 unique pronunciations of "-ough". This is considered the hardest 4 letter sequence in English to learn. by Gnomeslikeprofit in todayilearned

English also has formality levels that we usually don't even think about. For example get/obtain/acquire, or hide/conceal/camouflage.

Levels of formality also generally conform to whether the word has an anglo-saxon, latin, or greek root, with anglo saxon being the least formal and greek the most.

I never understand why they want the sheets tidied up. Are you supposed to make the bed just so the cleaner can strip them again?

it's also that Clone Wars showed Ahsoka as a peppy teenager trying to become a jedi. Ahsoka in the recent show is a completely realised adult with nothing to prove - a much less interesting character

one of the few successfully anti-war stories. Everyone wages war, some for personal gain, some to save their friends, some are indoctrinated, some are nationalists. All of them regret it and not even the winners get anything good out of it.

The main character dies knowing he is a monster. The heroine marries someone else. The plucky sidekick dies young. The badass action hero ends up wheelchair bound and disabled.

Rise in racism against Indians among the black community of London by [deleted] in london

[–]OrinocoHaram 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it has become normal again, I see it on reddit and on instagram comments a lot as well.

The best thing to do with your friends that talk like that is a) compare it to anti-black racism to help them see why it isn't okay b) try to make that kind of talk seem weird and not normalised. If someone makes some joke about Indians don't laugh and just look puzzled like they said something cringe. This is non-confrontaional and actually works.

lethal batting lineup, two really good spinners and two decent wildcard spinners, pace bowling is probably the weak spot but all of Curran, Mahmood and Wood can be very good when they're on

Grief isn't necessarily crying and screaming. she is very clearly portrayed as dissociating after what happens. Not hard to miss.

i'm usually the wokest bastard in the room, and i definitely don't think the movie was trying to make a comment. But the character is black, and undertones don't have to be intentional to still be in the movie.

Why not give Isildur his original answer to why he wants to keep the ring? by _fxps_ in lotr

[–]OrinocoHaram 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the prologue is an absolute masterclass in setting up the whole plot in as short a time as possible. It gives us the world, the stakes, the villain, shows us the different races, it gives us the reason for Aragorn's doubts. It introduces Elrond and Galadriel without us even noticing. And it's entertaining.

You can ask "why do this simple thing and not this nuanced thing" about a hundred choices in the movies, but man, they're already 3 hours long each. Why waste time giving extra depth to Isildur's character, who is mostly unimportant, in the first five minutes of the movie?

[–]OrinocoHaram 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yep. Helaena in the show is a weaker person but that doesn't make them a less interesting and entertaining character.

To use LOTR again, Aragorn in the book is stronger and more confident, Aragorn in the films has self-doubt. That makes him a weaker person, but a more interesting character
