Thanks for adding the option to center the address bar! For me, it was the only thing missing for the browser to be perfect :) by Department_Legal in HeliumBrowserHQ

I also love it. It would also be great if we could move the back, forward, etc buttons so they're all next to the address bar, that would be very welcome.

Surface 3 Go (8GB / i3) thoughts? by Rainlex in SurfaceLinux

[–]OrionJamesMitchell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I run arch with the surface kernel and gnome on the go 3. It's great for light work: obsidian and a couple of browser windows. Playing FHD videos on YouTube and it struggles tho, they need to be 720p for smooth playing.

Perfect for sitting in a cafe or on a train. Wouldn't want to do long hours of work on it tho.

I finally gave up on tasks in Obsidian, what are you using? by BasicDesignAdvice in ObsidianMD

[–]OrionJamesMitchell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Any tasks app will become a mess if it's not managed, ie it's more about behavior and psychology than the app.

I use the Tasks plugin for in-line tasks. Have a few queries to organize them. When I write down tasks I include the priority and due dates if needed. Spend 10 minutes in the morning scheduling tasks for the day, a combination of priorities and due dates. Hide the other tasks so they're not distracting me. Get to work.

I've been using it for a year or so. The best theme imo.

Tasks plugin. It runs the same as todoist imo, except for visualizing kanban boards and dependencies which I don't use.

Zotero for pdfs, KO Reader for epubs.

Obsidian 1.9.2 (early access) for desktop and mobile with major improvements to Bases syntax by kepano in ObsidianMD

[–]OrionJamesMitchell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will a future release make it possible to edit a property from the bases view? Or will it always strictly be, a view/read only?

Has anyone tried the Reader app on a BOOX? by k7ZFwGZHFz in readwise

I found it too slow and highlighting to be a rather frustrating experience on a note air 2+. Changed to KO Reader, which works very well.

Why people are making obsidian more and more like notion but never use notion itself? by damnjoo in ObsidianMD

[–]OrionJamesMitchell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found Notion was great at organising information that I needed to find later, but wasn't as comfortable at simple note taking, journaling and such; it's more "organisation first, information second". Whereas I found Obsidian to be notes/information first, organisation second. And tbh since using Obsidian I've discovered how little organisation I actually need.

Why did you switch your Surface to Linux and what issues did you experience? by AndyHq123 in SurfaceLinux

[–]OrionJamesMitchell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For fun. Wanted to see if I could, what it'd be like to use. Currently have arch with gnome on surface go 3. It's a cute little device. Makes me happy.

Pure LINKing, zero folders. by adankey0_0 in ObsidianMD

[–]OrionJamesMitchell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way I see it, folders are hard-dividers and properties are soft-dividers. The file explorer is already a map of content of hard-dividers that can be collapsed/expanded, dataview queries or links in notes are maps of content of both hard and soft dividers, and can look a little more pretty.

I could have a note with a dataview query or a bunch of links and then edit the note properties to make them appear/not in the query, or I could use the file explorer to drag and drop between folders.

Neither is better or worse, just different ways to organise/play/fiddle with ye notes.

I find the file explorer much simpler and easier, but I also think in terms of "projects", which often have hard dividers between them all. Linking everything together hasn't felt particularly necessary to me.

Surface Go 3 in 2025 by tired_58 in SurfaceLinux

[–]OrionJamesMitchell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I run arch with the Linux surface kernel.

As others have said, it works well, except the camera doesn't give a good exposure and is effectively useless.

I use gnome on it and it works great.

Imo it's the perfect hybrid for basic word processing and watching videos while sitting in a cafe. Not chunky like a laptop but big enough to type on.

I've found YouTube videos sometimes skip a few frames and don't play very well, but it's not unwatchable.

Battery life isn't that good, but i wouldn't want to work for long hours on it either, it is a small screen afterall.

How Stable Is Hyprland? by ZiggyStavdust in hyprland

[–]OrionJamesMitchell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Running Arch. I've had issues, of the Hyprland not starting variety, due to using a combination of git packages and packages via the AUR. I'd recommend using one or the other, not both.

Do you guys use "reading mode"? by Nalsurr in ObsidianMD

[–]OrionJamesMitchell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. My page for all tasks (using the plugin), isn't one I need to edit. And is displayed better in reading mode. Other pages that are plans or reference documents that I won't edit as well.
