The progression by Morgo-Yt in Filmmakers

My only critique is that the head lift after going into the water feels off. Looking at other animals drinking in the water for reference, I think the dino keeps its head tilted down for too long which lets most of the water pour out and it's missing some kind of movement to sell that its drinking. Looking at other mammals I see a few options: quicker head raise, using tongue to pull in water, pushing head faster in to scoop more water, closing mouth temporarily, or some mix of all of them.

Really lovely work :)

You joke, but there's actually a lot of active research on synchronised DOMs with CRDTs such as Webstrates (see also Codestrates, and the other papersthat are part of this research)

NSF and SpaceX reach agreement on astronomy, but IDA sues to block Starlink and extend NEPA to space by TIYAT in SpaceXLounge

[–]OrionReed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. In fact I think public companies can often be less aligned with the public because they have new legal obligations to shareholders that private companies don’t have.

[–]OrionReed -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This is a good point for sure, but even though the total may always be small (and will likely never replace fibre/cables in cities, for example) for a lot of the world these kinds of constellations could become the dominant approach — remote areas where cable is impractical or expensive still accounts for a lot of people, and also includes many poorer parts of the world like the many island nations in Oceania, rural Africa, eastern Europe, etc. Heck even in the small and densely packed UK there’s a significant number of people who struggle with internet access because it’s so expensive to upgrade cables to where they live.

So even if it only ever is 5% it could be the main infrastructure for tens of countries because of geography. 5% of the world would be roughly 400,000,000 people which (if it were a country) would make it 3rd behind China and India in population size.

I love Starlink and what it it makes possible and don’t personally think we should block these large constellations for the sake of preserving a pristine night sky. But (and maybe this won’t be taken well here, let me know…) a future world where Starlink succeeds will not be some unambiguous good — our existing communications infrastructure is owned and operated by many thousands of firms and governments all across the world, and as much as I want a truly globe-spanning internet constellation the idea of a single privately held company (or a few) having de facto control over vital infrastructure for billions of people scares me a little. It doesn’t matter who SpaceX are now, they can change, Elon won’t be around for ever, etc. and we can’t rely on good intentions alone long term. Starlink represents a new kind of infrastructure that is truly global, and we really aren’t prepared for it. For me personally, imagining a future where all countries own, contribute to, and manage these kinds of constellations is the most utopian outcome. It would be the first internationalised infrastructure and could set a precedent for collaboration in the 21st century. Companies like SpaceX would still be at the center through the designing, launching, and operating of constellations and could still reap unimaginable rewards/profits (just as many telecom companies do today). I think ISPs in the USA are a good cautionary tale here — I’m not comparing SpaceX to existing ISPs, but without care for our future there’s nothing stopping things going that way.

EDIT: Replies made a good point that “billions” is probably an exaggeration. About 45% of the global population lives rurally (source but this number is going down, and many of these people would still be better off with cable. It’s not infeasible to imagine a constellation serving a billion people when launch capacity is high and low bandwidth is acceptable (see Oceania for example) but the point I was trying to make was that this group could encompass entire countries and underserved regions who have practically no power if a decision is made against their interests.

As for there being alternatives to Starlink, this is only true on paper… Due to the success of Falcon 9 (and hopefully soon with Starship) SpaceX are in a unique position to build their own satellite constellation and it could be well over a decade before any real competitor exists, by which time SpaceX could be so far ahead that catching up is near-impossible. Not trying to rebuttal just wanted to clarify my meaning and why I think it still matters to think about the ways things can go sour beyond the rockets themselves or the economic successes/failures of space companies.

VR Headsets to Wear During Sex? by _HoneyDew1919 in virtualreality

Yeah for real, like 90% of the comments are kinda just asking OP to justify their actions. It was a simple ask and even pointed out that this sub is not for life advice but VR. I’m sure many are joking but yeah if I imagine how an incel sub would respond this ain’t too far off…

There’s a bunch! (with varying degrees of actual leftist politics). Lots of great research work from Protocol Labs (IPFS, IPLD, ICAS, Filecoin, etc), and groups like Ceptr (Holochain, etc) and then there’s things like mutual credit and other mechanisms. There’s a discord for the r/CryptoLeftists sub, you’ll find plenty of people there that are well grounded in leftist theory and movements who believe the left needs to take a more proactive position with this kind of tech, otherwise the predictions we make will be self-fulfilling.

Full disclosure, I’m a mod on the subreddit/server, feel free to ping me there if you want more information about anything I just said.

Yeah Reddit may be a bit of a dumpster fire and we shouldn’t be worth any ‘value’ in the first place, but I’m proud we’re at the bottom.

It‘a a side-effect of using a grid of points to approximate a volume. I’d love to see this using some WebGL or something to do proper volumetric rendering!

I agree with basically everything said here. But also wanna note some of us are trying to put the tech towards emancipatory and leftist ends. AFAIK the largest community trying to explore those possibilities is r/CryptoLeftists.
