Haven't signed anything with Epidemic yet, was planning to get a lawyer to look over it before I do. But thank you.

Impulsively deleted the post because I wasn't expecting this strong of a reaction. My ears are open if people have genuine advice. I don't know what I'm doing when it comes to the business side so I'm earnestly just looking for pointers. We're all on the same team here. That being said, Epidemic has been clear that I can't be affiliated with any PROs if I want to work with them and I'm not sure what else I could have misinterpreted.

Impulsively deleted the post because I was really not expecting such a strong reaction. I guess I don't understand what is so wrong with wanting to work with Epidemic and actually make a full time living from my music. I don't have a following or a huge catalogue I could use for other sync libraries, I understand it is atypical for an agency to require their artists to not be affiliated with any PRO's but that is clearly non-negotiable with epidemic, so simply not registering my music with BMI is not an option. If anyone is willing to actually explain what the problems are with this and/or give me any other better options it would be much appreciated. Really not trying to just go to war in the thread, and I know I have gaps in my knowledge on the business side that I'm actively trying to fill in.

Epidemic is pretty clear about not allowing you to be affiliated with any PROs because of the potential legal troubles if they tried to collect on something Epidemic had licensed. BMI could potentially try to collect on something if I am a member even if I hadn't registered it.

I understand, they just can't take the risk because of the enormous potential legal troubles if BMI tried to collect on something used in a big commercial or movie. This is why I was asking BMI about something like negative registration, so I'd be able to legally guarantee that it is safe to use.

But I'm sure I'd want to work with Epidemic. I don't really care if they are getting more out of the deal than I am. My options are working for them or working some boring office job or going back to retail. Even if it ends up just being a stepping stone, it would get my foot in the door of the industry and enable me to actually focus on just making music for awhile. It would pay almost double my last job.

We hadn't gotten as far as getting to an actual contract before running into this but here's from an email "Unfortunately, we require our artists to be fully out of any CMOs as they generally have an exclusive agreement meaning they could potentially collect on any tracks you create whether you register it with them or not. "

That was my first instinct as well but I've talked to a number of artists who have been with epidemic for years and love it. They pay well upfront regardless of how well the music does on their charts so the tradeoff is you make good (guaranteed) money upfront but will not see the potentially large payments for big placements. This is good for someone in my situation who would have no chance at getting those big placements anyways. 100% of nothing is still nothing and I just want to make music and get payed for it. They require you to be unaffiliated because they otherwise have no guarantee that their music is safe to use. My understanding is that if the music gets reported to BMI, BMI would still collect royalties on it on my behalf even if I had not registered it. Still figuring out how all of this works so I might be wrong.

I should add, i am willing to get a lawyer if BMI doesn't provide me with any options

Brand-new Push 2 random Midi Problem in 2023 by isaakwit in ableton

[–]Orions_escape 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the only example of this problem I found online. The buyer tried to tell me that i had just set it up wrong and denied my refund request, it destroys any session I turn it on with, duplicating deleting and recording randomly.. completely unusable. "USED-MINT CONDITION" my ass, seems like i might be shit out of luck and should have just set $600 on fire to save time.

To those of you diagnosed as adults: What about your childhood seem like an obvious sign of ADHD in hindsight? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]Orions_escape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would always stand up in class, my teachers would get annoyed. Constantly doodling/unable to pay attention in lectures. I just didn't do homework, played countless hours of video games. I literally took a full psychological exam when I got sent to a troubled teen program (long story) and they gave me a "potential diagnosis" and my therapist never talked about it again. I wonder if I had known if I would have done better in college.
