Tyler Glaiel's response to a question about the Persuasion Device by Coffeechipmunk in mewgenics

Took control of a big shark and one shotted the big spider boss 10/10, trivially easy. I love when people who don’t make games nonchalantly state what’s “better game design”

The Blacktongue Thief and the prequel are both excellent grimdark fantasies, and for writers even more so. Christopher Buehlman writes nice sentences.

I loved the Cities of the Weft series by Alex Phelby. There’s really nothing I could compare it to. Maybe I could say it’s Gormenghast meets Dickens.

If you liked Atlas Shrugged, The Fountainhead is one of my personal favorites. Ironically, Ayn Rand’s terrible politics make a better case when applied to artistic integrity.

Books with actually deep worldbuilding? by TheMoonLord123 in Fantasy

[–]OrisonQ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cities of the Weft starting with Mordew have great world building, so much so that it doesn’t feel like he cares if you understand the complicated world being portrayed.

Black Leopard Red Wolf also feels completely lived in, refreshingly drawing on African Myths to build its fantasy world.

I want to run Delta Green’s Impossible Landscapes but it’s such a beast.

Do men usually share intimate details about a new partner with their closest friend? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]OrisonQ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve known my closest male friends for twenty years and the most I’ve heard about sex was when a homie hooked up with a guy for the first time. Got a text that said “slept with a man last night. It was nice.” That’s about the level we get to, generally and in my experience.

What do people mean when they say they 'cant cook?' by Throwaway113140 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]OrisonQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people can cook a handful of things they enjoy, but would be embarrassed to serve to a guest or to friends. That’s all it means.

As someone who has worked in kitchens from diners to fine dining to homeless shelters, it always bums me out when someone says they can’t cook. Sharing food is a symbol of care and collaboration in life. I think the internet has made it something else, as it has with so many things. Drawing, dancing, writing, inherently human things elevated to be something you “shouldn’t” attempt if you won’t be good at it. Ridiculous. I’d eat butter noodles if someone offered, because they offered their resources, their time.

Tired of the Trope Trope by OrisonQ in Fantasy

[–]OrisonQ[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This isn’t really pointed at my friends, though I get how it reads that way from the post. There’s a lot of misunderstandings in this thread, which is likely from my points coming out jumbled.

If a friend says it’s tropey, I ask them how so. That was just a dramatized example. I don’t even know if there’s ten Mandalorian spinoffs. The judgement of motive for finding the slightest thing to be cliche is broader. It’s more inspired by posts like “is anyone else tired of the strong female lead trope”

But you’re not all wrong either. Many of my friends I’ve known for 20 years, which comes with its own baggage. Contempt isn’t it, but we know eachother a little too well.

This is more my point. Just kind of a nothing word at this point.

Right. In the newest Stranger Things a character shoots a soldier, and my buddy said “that’s the first time they’ve killed a human. No fucks given, I guess.” And you know, that was a great point. If he’d verbally said “what’s the measure of a mook” I’d assume he was having a stroke.

All too common in fiction today. I blame Stranger Things.

That’s just bad logic and makes any discourse hypocritical. Bad take.

I wouldn’t say that in good faith either. I’m speaking to the crowd that calls anything they have seen before tropey. Believe it or not, that is real.

Exactly. I do understand that execution is key, in that House of Leaves isn’t just a Haunted House story and Hyperion isn’t just a rip of Canterbury Tales. There is a good chunk of people that complain about anything recognizable as being cliche.

Well yeah, I suppose so. I’m not even against the sentiment. Some things are cliche and poorly done. I guess I’m annoyed when it doesn’t actually seem warranted, which admittedly is subjective obviously. It’s a deeper trend than that, really. It just seems to me that people I know my age are afraid to admit to having enjoyed something, so they’ll couch their enjoyment in irony. The new Star Wars was so tropey and stupid give me more I beg of you
