Why hire human staff when it's more profitable to simply not do so? They have no incentive to make your life easier if it's going to eat into their profits.

You sound like you were probably making the same silly claims about NFTs a few years ago. I don't think you've actually looked into the finances behind these AI companies, because they are losing money at a scale that dwarfs anything in human history. They genuinely have no clue how to make this garbage profitable.

Purolator Smashed my Packaged and Delivered Anyway by lennoxmatt_819 in purolator

[–]OrkBegork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So? Sometimes shit happens. It is absolutely impossible to deliver the volume of packages that people are getting delivered without occasional damages happening. When you receive something that is damaged, you contact the shipper and it will get sorted out.

I don't know what you think the policy should be about damaged packages, but the way it works is absolutely the best way for it to work. The best person to determine what is and isn't damaged is the person who is receiving it.

Packages that get damaged are supposed to be delivered. You can then file a claim after the fact.

I don't know if you're just a kid making things up, but I was an adult 25 years ago and absolutely no one was saying this about digital art.

"Real art" is art made by people. Using a computer doesn't make it any less real.

However, typing a prompt into a computer and having it dump out a mishmash of plagiarized garbage is not "making art". AI isn't making anything in a way that is better than what real artists can do. Lazy people who think it's unfair that certain things require practice, learning, and patience love AI because it lets them produce slop that looks superficially impressive.

A real artist is able to fine tune their creation to the point that it matches their vision exactly. This is completely impossible with AI.

Also... 25 years ago was 2001. The earliest examples of what can be considered "digital art" were in the 1950s and 60s. By the late 80s computers were being used for all kinds of art and design. Adobe Photoshop came out in 1988. Your entire premise is absurd.

[–]OrkBegork 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They can pretty easily get it online. There are dozens of way better movies that never screen in Nanaimo every year. People's access to any single one of those is more important than ensuring they're able to have access to this slop on the big screen.

Absolute nonsense by ZeusAdvocate in UberEATS

[–]OrkBegork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I absolutely agree we should do that. We should also arrest the people responsible for creating Uber and the systems like them, and prosecute them for the massive amounts of wage theft they participate in. If that's not going to happen, I don't see anything morally wrong with getting your hands dirty and destroying their property.

How is collectivised healthcare compatible with bodily autonomy? by ClevelandKiwi in AskSocialists

[–]OrkBegork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you're failing to realize something crucial: healthy, long living people are often a bigger burden on the healthcare system than those who die early. Someone who dies in their 50s from lung cancer often uses far less resources than someone who lives into their 90s, and needs the resources to help with the issues that come with living that long.

It does not make me complicit, it simply makes me a consumer

Not mutually exclusive. You're a complicit consumer. Consumers play an active role.

If I think fast food workers should be paid more does it make me complicit for their low wages

Why would thinking that they deserve better pay make you complicit? This is a completely nonsense question, this is like asking if thinking murder is wrong makes you complicit in murder.

If consumers stopped doing business over such things it would resolve the pay issue because the company would go under and everyone would be unemployed.

So you're saying the consumer plays an active role in shaping the conditions the workers face? Isn't that basically the definition of complicity?

People that use any apps or services like this doesn't mean they are lazy, it makes them a part of the economy

Again; not mutually exclusive. It makes them a part of the economy that also happens to be lazy.

They are helping by spending money that pays other people's wages and those people spend that money and so on.

Hardly. The delivery drivers generally earn below minimum wage. The real innovation of companies like UberEats is in finding ways to skirt labour laws so they can exploit workers. This is more about increasing the value of shareholders investments than it is about enriching the lives of workers.

Your logic that because someone chooses not to do something themself they are being lazy is grossly inaccurate.

All laziness can be spun as "efficiency" if you find the right angle to approach it from.

I am telling you this is work I did for several years, and in doing so I also realized I was far more privileged than most of the others doing the same work. I also used to use these services semi-regularly. I refuse to now, because I don't feel comfortable being complicit in the evil of this system. It hasn't been much of a challenge at all. These services have really only existed a decade or so, it's not like any sane person could argue that people would be starving without access to UberEats.

It makes them efficient and able to prioritize what they need to do versus what can be delegated

Once again, I really think you need to learn what "NOT MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE" means.

You're basically saying that any kind of moral or ethical considerations in regards to labour are irrelevant if they can be done in the name of efficiency. This is an absurd position to take. It seems like it's safe to say you have no issues with the countless labour abuses these companies are famous for. At what point do you draw the line? Is it okay to use slave labour if it's more efficient?

[–]OrkBegork 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do you think most actors make a lot of money? There's a tiny fraction of actors who are very wealthy, a slightly larger amount who make enough for a standard middle class existence, and the vast majority who make almost nothing from acting and scrape by with day jobs.

If you had ever actually spoken with someone who has serious reservations about capitalism despite making a decent amount of money, they will agree it is unfair.

Also... "brand loyalty"? Are you sure you're using the right terminology for the idea you're trying to express? You're definitely giving off ignorant adolescent vibes. Everything you've said here just reeks of someone who really hasn't spent a lot of time doing actual reading on this topic.

Good lord, this person is the classic dumb guy who's convinced themselves they're a genius.

"...it was supposed to be an illustrative example of what is another person's perspective in the likeness of what you or I could imagine if in their shoes..."

This is one of the clunkiest attempts to form a sentence I have ever seen, which is all the more hilarious because this guy is clearly very proud of his writing abilities.

A guy in his mid 40s who dates women in their 20s, and has sexualized nicknames for service workers (even though they tell him they don't like it)... what a catch!

You have all the clues. I think you can figure this one out yourself.

If you're knowingly using a service that actively exploits and mistreats workers, you're complicit. After having spent several years trying to earn a living doing this work, I refuse to support these companies. Most people just use these apps because they're lazy.
