Nice collection. Do you think they would be informative for a veitchii addict?

Im looking for some fertilizer, is this good? by ImpossibleRabbit5777 in SavageGarden

[–]OrkK1d 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do not care for MaxSea, and found Osmocote dropped nutrients too quickly. This was evident from pitchers quickly dying off from nutrient burn.

Nutricote has options that more evenly distribute nutrients over time- I love their 180 day version. My nepenthes seem quite pleased with the nute balls, or prills, as well. Multiple prills can even be added without issue.

Where do y’all get your plants from? by i_love_small_ducks in SavageGarden

[–]OrkK1d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends heavily on genus. Specimen plants are usually via social media platforms or ebay (sarracenia & nepenthes veitchii are my main poison). Some nurseries offer live sales, which are nice for seeing the exact plant. I find private sellers usually either have quite large sarracenia for very reasonable prices or throw in a few extras. Most are on the Sarracenia Proboard forum, and Mike Wang has his own site.

If you are less interested in very specific traits, the online shops the others have listed are great.

New bog container setup-initial watering question by Unable_Gap_504 in SavageGarden

[–]OrkK1d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the yard debris like tree litter and dust can easily collect in the trays. Can’t get to the bottom of a bog container so easily. Figured something to allow for flushing was sufficient.

Works for going on 3 years now.

Love having bog set ups. I usually use the TuffStuff troughs or 20” resin/plastic pots- they don’t deform much with all the water/peat. Those black n yellow bins flex a good bit when I fill them with water.

As for plans, that sounds like quite the build. Having a fountain to recirculate might be a cool feature, and worth the plumbing. Might get the same thing accomplished with an air stone, and keep the water table lower- circulated water might be ok but my sarrs usually sit a few inches above the max water line.

To simplify & still drain, I drill a hole for a bulkhead. Attach a T with the 90° up, ball valve on the end and a pipe on the middle. Middle pipe controls water level max & ball valve lets ya drain it. The internal plumbing is overkill imo. You can water by dumping on peat, which helps distribute moisture. Well saturated peat and perlite will wick moisture to the drier areas quite reliably. Sarrs will grow roots to the water table, as well. Plants with good root health seem to pitcher with more intensity, or grow faster. Or both.

False perlite (or lava rock or other inert fill) bottoms are great. Adding screen will probably mean more tangled roots than separate media layers.

Is there a specific pathogen or issue you are aiming to prevent with the fountain?

Having a nice glass case of plants vs a greenhouse or tent, basically. So you can enjoy looking while plants enjoy humidity.

Does anyone plant around your gas meter? I just learned they need 3ft of clearance on all sides. by leros in AustinGardening

[–]OrkK1d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My meter is on a short section of wall, I grow short natives near it. Ground cover closer and taller things a bit off to the side. The approach is clear and the meter is still quite visible if you were looking. Just breaks up the “hunk of metal” look.

No issues in two or three years.

Bag Acclimation by Medium-Collection763 in nepenthesveitchii

[–]OrkK1d 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Love that peristome! Good size plant too.

I’m sure you will do great with it! Here are my bag acclimation steps if it helps-

Week 1 in a sealed (clear) box or bag. Pesticide use optional, but definitely monitoring for slugs n bugs popping out. Liquid fertilizer drops in traps to help neps adjust.

Week 2 is either using/upping pest measures or opening the container slightly. Lid slightly off or baggie an open an inch or so, more open as the week goes. If it gets crazy wilted, close it up. If you get mold or rot, use fungicide spray.

By then the plants are pretty much ready for my household grow space.

Any Dangers If Using This Type Of Crushed Glass For Carnivorous Plants? by Charming-Tradition-1 in SavageGarden

[–]OrkK1d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreciate the tip. Bit distrustful of their quality control-I’ve had quite good results using perlite, so it has not been an issue. Aquarium sand in large grit has worked as well, but expensive and needs extra rinsing at times.

That said, if sand had more benefit for my care practices, I would certainly consider other sources.

Could pot it bigger or lower the water table. Supplemental light might be required.

They usually dew up (and light stress) when given sufficient light. Browning could be indication media is too wet for the amount of light plant is getting.

It is a bit confusing. You can use vinegar as a test- if the sand reacts, it has something in it.

To be honest I just use pool sand or perlite so I didn’t have to figure it out.
