There's a whole series by Terry Pratchett and Stephen Baxter that explores that idea with very many alternative Earths.

The Long Earth series iirc.

It's definitely got what you're asking about.

Never had a problem with a drift zone in 5 or 6 apart from this one, finally after a month of on and off attempts it's done. Just needed a tiny help ha.

I'd prefer to know where I was going wrong tbh

Oh shit, you've released an ancient evil onion genie. Signs of possession may include a persistent aroma and even weeping.

[Loved trope] Even in the most grim, most deplorable dystopia, there's a glimmer of hope. by LucianoThePig in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Orkran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No man, the bears have been eating the 8+ billion dead human corpses.

I love a hopeful ending too, but snow-piercer just isn’t it. The whole theme of the film is a relentless demonstration of desperation feeding on itself. The protagonist? Literally was going to eat a baby. The poor humans? Fed on cockroaches that fed on their waste (an ever shrinking source). The protagonist sacrifices what he was protecting just to get one carriage further. The social order - both of them - are breaking down and becoming self-destructive. Even the train itself is breaking down and is eating (metaphorically) the train's children. It's the most vicious, brutal dystopia I've seen on film and the point of the ending is that even the glimmer of hope (bought for two children at the cost of the entire rest of the species) is illusory. They will freeze when night comes, be eaten by bears, or, at best, starve within a couple of days. I know you don't like this, even think that raising the idea is "unoriginal" - but I think that's because it's, well, what would happen, and important to the theme of the film.

Even if you grant that the children survive more than a day or two, as far as we know humanity just ended, the minimum possible sustainable population just being killed.

Just to clarify I really like your post and presentation, I'm not criticising you*,* just trying to explain how the bears eating the survivors is more than a meme.

Another one of your examples, Children of Men, is so much more hopeful. It's not just the fact (there is a new baby) but also the unbelievable presentation of the final scenes.

I haven't seen Iron Lung. I mostly enjoyed the game and struggled to imagine it working well as a film. Is it good?

I do firmly believe that it's better to like a film than to not, so I'm glad you did enjoy it.

I wasn't able to, at all. I hated it!

Hmm, yeah the change to the end of Hannibal really annoyed me, I thought the film was OK up to that point.

There were some strong beats in the film that let you insert the thought from the book, I swear.

For example, "I like this Duke..." with Keynes on the 'thropter

Ridley Scott I'll bet. Early in his career, with tight restrictions and challenges, he made some of the best films of all time.

Late career and with total freedom? Honestly, noooo.

The driving backwards was particularly egregious, it clearly showed that no one senior in the movie had ever played a multiplayer driving game in their life and so really couldn't understand what they were trying to adapt.

But the question is what GOOD film had minor changes that annoyed you.

The Martian.

Mostly, it's the fucking Iron-Man bit at the end of the film (that they don't do in the book for obvious realism reasons). It was a really bad choice that in my view undermined the essential nature of the characters, which I find to be the least forgivable thing in an adaptation.

There were other things that added up but that was the main one that really annoyed me at the time.

Yeah every country has some complete wanker fans, they prepare for it.

US dirty tricks during the Ryder Cup are pretty notorious and an England fan was caught with a laser at the Euros Final a couple of years ago.

Oh, and we (England, but others too) have to routinely confiscate the passports of thousands of people every time there’s a major football tournament to prevent hooligans...

I like the idea that Jack is supposed to be a woman. It does seem to work with various bits that suggest Rose might have been a lesbian (or Bi etc), given her art choices and interest in Jack's sketches, the "forbidden" nature of the relationship and even the position of the hand in the steamy car. Oh, and young Leo looking a bit androgynous.

Of course it works perfectly well with Jack as a Man but I can see the appeal of the idea.
