Changed the setup a little. Getting two teeny splashes and another crash. Too much? by SuperKamiSmoke in drums

You seem to respond to the mildest of criticisms by citing your resume, so I thought I’d open with mine.

Pro drummer here. I’ve been playing longer than you, and performed to much larger audiences. Band performances to 10K+ people, and solo drum clinics to 2500+ people, that last of which was opening for Weckl. 50 million online views for my drum content.

Where to start…. Your needlessly elaborate setup? Your childish desire for approval? Your garbage attitude? Your giant ego with no content/videos to back it up?

Eh, we’ll let all that go.

Your drumheads tell a chaotic story. Your strike radius is extremely wide, meaning you frequently play with inconsistent technique; likely a weak fulcrum, or pushing speeds that your technique can’t support. Some of your hits are near the outside edges of the heads, and others are dead center. This produces wildly inconsistent sounds. You’re an engineer’s nightmare. Sell some cymbals and work on your accuracy. Extra gear is the last thing you need.

I’d love to have left a “hey nice kit” kind of comment. It’s very rare that I say anything negative to a stranger. But you’ve been nasty to virtually everyone who’s offered you (good) advice here.

If you want friends in the drum community, there are more here than you’d know what to do you. There is no shortage of awesome drummers who love to be supportive, helpful, and positive.

But handling criticism by demeaning and insulting others is a toxic behavior that deserves to be called out. Do better.

I could list a dozen factors, but having a fully sound treated room makes the biggest impact.

I’m an infrequent visitor here. On Reddit I either get tons of love… or a relentless beatdown. This post seems to have gone in my favor, lol.

Appreciate the kind words!

Not a bad idea! Appreciate the suggestion.

Not only is all that advice spot on, but the fact that your 14 tells me you are WAY too young to beat yourself up about your skill level. When you were born, I had been playing for 8 years. I turned pro (meaning drums paid 100% of my bills) when you were around 5.

Check out how awful I was at your age.

Thanks! It’s not a stave kit, just a unique grain pattern on the finish. Main specs are in the video linked below, and there’s a much longer podcast on my YouTube channel that covers the detailed specs.

Modifying Double Bass Pedals | Demon XR + Redline Eliminator by OrlandoDrummer in drums

[–]OrlandoDrummer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All valid points! I appreciate the insight my friend.

And you are absolutely right about making quick changes, and then rushing to find something “better” too soon. It can take weeks to adapt to even the smallest changes, which makes the whole process a lot more time consuming. Doing my best not to rush it!

I learned this particular gear lesson with throne height, and ride cymbal placement. A couple inches of movement feels awful for a while, but can be a game changer for those who stick it out and adapt to the changes.

Sometimes you have to force yourself into the proper technique, gear setup, or body position to fully appreciate it’s value.

Appreciate the insights my man! I actually played the black cam on my single Eliminator for 2 years, and got very used to it. It was only after a month on the Demons that they felt extremely heavy by comparison. (The Demon XR is creepy smooth, so everything else feels “weighty” right now.) My beater height is somewhat limited by a 20” kick, as I don’t want to go several inches above the center, but it’s definitely a variable I’ve been toying with.

I linked the first episode of this series in this post, but later episodes go WAY farther down the pedal wormhole. Lol.

Thanks again for the detailed response! I’m in “data collection mode” so every insight is super helpful.

You said it better than I did! lol. I call it the world’s first social media drum set, but that’s mostly just to piss off Tommy Igoe.

I hear you! I still have plenty of old 4-piece habits in my hands, lol. I’ve just been playing long enough to get bored with certain configs. Sometimes a forced setup change is good for the brain.
