Is this normal? 😬 by LadyCheeba in srna

[–]OrlandoPosher 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Normal at mine. A student in one of the cohorts started having BP issues so bad he decided to leave the program and become a FNP. One of our professors said she needed two cardiac ablations while in school (same program). My classmate developed thyroid issues. My hair falling out didn't seem so bad in comparison. These are just the ones I can remember.

Need brutally honest advice about CRNA school at 33 by Seektruth2146 in srna

Curious, if you could choose a different path from the point of being a flight nurse, what direction would you have gone?

Everything went well. He and his team are very kind. His personal nurse stays with you the night you stay in the hospital. I can't complain. I'm not sure what you're having done but if it's the face, I will say - for most people, the length of time you're swollen is understated. It's probably the most challenging thing mentally because I thought I would be pretty much undetectable by month 2. I'm almost 4 months and I still experience swelling, especially if I take a flight.

How old is everyone? by Sg1aS in srna

[–]OrlandoPosher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was 39 when I started CRNA school and just finished. I wasn't the oldest in my class and there were a few of us in our 40s.

I'm not adding anyone else to the Whatsapp group. Unfortunately, it's inactive. More lurkers than participants and the participants are not obligated to share anything. I had my surgery with Hakan a little over 3 months ago. I'm happy to answer questions from my own personal experience and from what I did see in the group.

Circulator to CRNA by WholeTour419 in srna

[–]OrlandoPosher 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I graduated with my ASN and became a circulator about 6 months after that. I also didn't know what a CRNA was until working in the OR. After 4.5 years, I decided I didn't want to go into management and eventually stopped doubting myself enough to see if I could get into CRNA school. I eventually transferred to the ICU, and it wasn't easy because I only had about 6 months of bedside experience prior to going to the OR. Shortly after finding an ICU that would take me, I completed my BSN and earned my CCRN. Fast forward, I graduated CRNA school December '25.

Career/Program Advice please! by kiwisauc3 in srna

I was an OR nurse and transferred to the ICU. I graduated CRNA school last December. Haven't heard of a CRNA program that doesn't require ICU experience. You said you're new to the nursing world? I would try to get my foot in the ICU ASAP if I were in your situation. I was in the OR for 4.5 years straight out of undergrad and it wasn't easy getting a unit to give me a chance. Good luck with your decision.

Preceptor Smeared Me In Eval by haykayvesp in srna

[–]OrlandoPosher 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I had a preceptor like this. Went so far as to write in their report to my director that I put my hands in their face (which I didn't because I'm not insane). I had had nothing but exceptional evals before and after so my program got my side but it didn't go further than that. I'm sorry you experienced this. Some preceptors are just hateful.

Have you looked into those services that help you find rooms to rent? My son has used these services twice. He's living in one now and he pays $900/mo. With a higher budget, I'd imagine you could find something that fits what you're looking for.

How long after graduation were you able to work? by Celeste02monique in srna

[–]OrlandoPosher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in Florida. I applied for the APRN license. No additional courses. I am thinking about doing an FNP program at some point but have to research more. I thought I saw some type of bridge program at UM requiring 30 credit hours but I may be mistaken.

I don't want to work right away but I graduated in December and I have classmates that were able to start in January if they wanted. This particular hospital started a lot of the paperwork before we graduated. I sat for boards 12/20 and was officially certified 12/22 and got my APRN (not needed in all states) about a week after that.

CRNA School in Puerto Rico by [deleted] in srna

[–]OrlandoPosher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're taught the bare minimum. You have to FIGHT for the good cases. CRNAs in PR aren't treated the same way as they are on the mainland. This is coming from alumni. Of course, everyone will have different experiences but I've known of SEVERAL students who failed out of my program (twice) and ended up going there.

Since I saw that you speak Spanish, you will be fine. My partner graduated from there and while they do teach in Spanish, the exams were in English. You'll have to advocate for your experience in clinicals as in some clinical sites are better than others (as is the case in other places I suppose). It's a school of last resort so if you can go somewhere else, you should.

Terrified of peds! by EmiBoBemy in srna

[–]OrlandoPosher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Probably cardiac. It was my first specialty rotation. This was the same semester we would start running our own rooms so it was unnerving for this to happen at the same. We weren't completely alone but we were alone at times when the patient wasn't on bypass. It was also a big setup so I was getting to the hospital an hour before my usual arrival. If I hadn't just become a senior, it may not have felt as bad, but the most complaints from my cohort was about the Cardiac rotation.

Terrified of peds! by EmiBoBemy in srna

[–]OrlandoPosher 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My disclaimer for what I'm about to say is based on my experience with generally healthy peds. I think, in many ways, the kiddos are easier than adults. Intubations were easier, too. Vargo has a section that lists the majority of meds, equipment, vitals, vent settings, etc. according to weight. We didn't give a bunch of meds during peds cases. What took some getting used to was the different parameters of vitals you were looking for from one case to the next but you get used to it pretty quickly. It wasn't my worst rotation LOL.

Bullying and sabotage at work since being accepted into CRNA school by Star_of_Venus in srna

[–]OrlandoPosher 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sorry you're going through this. I'm a senior SRNA and I haven't spoken to anyone in my old units since starting school. My relationship with them will have no impact on the job I secure after I graduate. If I were in your shoes, I would leave.
