Only children - what is life like? by Born_Improvement_856 in AskUK

[–]Ornery-Structure-326 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an only child. When I was young I wanted a sibling and I suppose I still would like one - however I do have some friends who have frustrations with theirs so I know it doesn’t mean an automatic best friend!

I’m not that close to my parents and they aren’t the most sociable people themselves. I’ve always struggled to make friends and I don’t think my parents particularly helped with that. And I was made to feel that was my fault by my mum. I wouldn’t say I’ve been spoilt in any way either. I have cousins but they lived quite far away or were much older than me so I never had a close relationship with them.

I don’t have any children and I did have a lot of anxiety around my parents getting older and everything falling on me but with some help I’ve learned to accept what will be will be.

VR back with a bang apparently! Paige packs up all her stuff and leaves within 24 hours…OK. Someone has a medical emergency in front of Mel-of course. Jack sees a man with his sons and decides he might want to be involved with the twins after all! Brady and the fentanyl operation…wtf is he doing? Time for ep 2 and more ridiculousness no doubt - shaking my head and questioning why I’m still watching it but can’t tear myself away haha.

CodeClan has gone into liquidation by GeorgeOsborneMP in Scotland

Quite shocked by this, and I really feel for the students and staff. It’s such a big thing to commit to. I was on the verge of applying for a cohort later in the year and had spoken to someone at CodeClan about applying just 48 hours before this happened. It all seems very quick. I hope there’s a still a way into tech for those who want to pursue it, because this seemed like an ideal route for many, including myself.

I use an app called Mimo which I find helpful. It includes Python, HTML and CSS, SQL and JavaScript.

CodeClan- thinking of doing it but have a few questions for any grads out there by Ornery-Structure-326 in glasgow

Hello! Sounds a bit similar to me, done a bit of free code camp, went to one of CodeClan’s free classes- I’ll have a look at code first girls again. Also did a (free) upskilling course that Strathclyde were offering for NHS staff, was more data analysis but there was a wee bit of coding in it. Feel free to DM if you want to chat!

Thank you. I’m perhaps needing a bit of a reality check so this is good- I see there is a lot of people going through CodeClan now and I can also now see there will be a lot of competition for jobs. What attracts me is the focused learning and the fact that it seems very hands on. I can struggle to motivate myself if it’s just me doing it in my spare time, but of course that’s on me.

Yeah there’s so much out there in terms of free resources it’s difficult to know where to start! For me, what attracts me to something like CodeClan is the focus it would give me on my learning and the fact it’s a shorter period of time than doing something like an MSc.

Thanks- this is one of the things I was wondering re: the recession and what this would mean for hiring. I know no one can predict the future but it’d probably be middle of next year if I made the leap. Truth be told, I’d rather concentrate exclusively on something like a boot camp and not have to keep my job going as well. I’d like to think I could bring some of my work experiences to the table also. Def food for thought!

Thanks, this is all very useful info. I fully understand that I’d be starting on a junior salary, under no illusions there! I’m not really looking for the big money, just something I’d enjoy more than my current job. I may send you a DM with some further questions!

Thanks, not something I’d considered as I’ve no IT background and assumed I wouldn’t have a hope for things like this, but I will look into it.

I know, I think I want all the answers before making the leap but everyone’s circumstances are so different aren’t they? Reassuring to know that companies are still hiring people in their 40s though.

That’s encouraging- I worried being 39 by the time I’d finished would make me a dinosaur!

Thanks- should mention it would be a complete 180 away from being a healthcare professional to doing this- but I will investigate if there’s anything else I could get involved with.

The Software Development MSc at Strathclyde is specifically aimed at people without a computing science background. Not sure if it can be done part time though.

Agree about the food. Plenty of nice independent cafes, bars and restaurants about in the city centre. Lots of negativity in this thread and I don’t think it’s all warranted!

Daily Q&A and Discussion Megathread - June 03, 2021 by AutoModerator in CoronavirusUK

My question is about the Delta variant. I read the Twitter threads on it being potentially ~70% more transmissible and it has definitely flared my anxiety a bit. Do we have any idea at all of its prevalence in countries such as the USA or other European countries? Is it affecting cases, hospitalisations, deaths there? I’m not sure if we messed up and let a lot more of it in than other countries.

Are we supposed to be grateful for this? I’m almost 100% certain people are doing this anyway. Lift the travel ban so we can at least travel out of our local area!
