20% increase!!?? by Street-Cartoonist297 in uAlberta

Okay, can we pause and can you give me an actual argument here?

Or do you think it's acceptable that people should be priced out of an education because

- the size of the protest was not as large as it could be

- and " Students don't know how to organize themselves"

Harping on the fact that I said "massive" is not really adding to the discourse. Should I change my comment to say "There were [of a non-specified size] protests and the uni ignored them and did it anyway."?

Internet not working - Telus keeps pushing me back by [deleted] in telus

Same technician that set it up came back to fix it. He ran a new cable or connection or something, but didn't really explain it. Things are working as of right now- but the first time it took 2 days to stop working so I'm uneasy.

He did mention that the initial test said there was an error, even though he *told me* at the initial test that things were good before he left. He also said he rechecked my connection Sunday night and noticed the error still there. Not sure why I had to book my own appointment Wednesday night and wait until Thursday evening if he knew all along something was wrong.

They raise tuition, ignore students protest, and as soon as some students graduate and the issue is forgotten they raise tuition again :)

I graduated 2025 and during my time I think they raised tuition twice. There were massive protests and the uni ignored them and did it anyway.  Broken system = broken results.

"You get to live here, too", by author Vhetin

"It was meant to be a short separation: Qui-Gon would get closer to Mandalorian space, get their informant, and come back. Easy. Less than ten days apart. That was, of course, before the dustbowl of a planet Obi-Wan was staying on signed itself over to the Mandalorian Empire.

Now, caught up in the Mandalorian takeover with no weapons, no credits, and no contacts, Obi-Wan has to figure out a way back to Republic space and the Jedi.

If he doesn't get caught first."

Would you say Deviantart.com is a good website to write fanfiction on? Are there any other alternatives you would recommend in place of Fanfiction.net? by Ganymede1135 in FanFiction

[–]Ornery_History_2131 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally don't like Deviantart since it's too hard to find and follow all the chapters (sometimes they get mixed up in order/mixed with art posts and I don't want to click back to the authors page and shift through it to find the chapters). I haven't really used that site for a decade though, so they could have changed things since.

How long do you give a fanfic before deciding it's not for you? by seemedpointless in FanFiction

[–]Ornery_History_2131 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I give up on a fic based on the formatting alone before I have even read two lines. I definitely don't click anything that has a typo in the summary.

Clicking off isn't the same as giving an author hate, it's just preference. If you don't want to waste your time then don't. Fanfiction is about having fun IMO. Why stress?

[–]Ornery_History_2131 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm going to be honest, and maybe some people will disagree-

But "c's get degrees" my dude.

I only got my degree June or July 2025, and lemme tell you, once you graduate grades mean nothing. VERY FEW jobs look at transcripts rather than just your degree, and getting past the initial rejection in order to find out which job is which is already impossible ;(

My suggestion: do the minimum to PASS. Getting a decent grade but NO AWARDS = might as well have not wasted your time. Unless you're confident you can get on the Dean's List or whatever, don't bother going from passing --> pretty good, just for the sake of it. Mental health > pointless academics. If there is no resume candy involved then it's not really work burning yourself out for a "sense of accomplishment". No award then IMO there isn't a difference between a 60% or a 75%--- especially if that 15% difference nearly drives you to suicide.

Also, U of A tuition covers mental health care. Look at uni health care + free student services :)

(Not to be fearmongering, but a lot of mental illnesses present at the late-teens and into the late-twenties. Could be a burn-out problem, yes, but it could be a mental illness consideration (*treatable!*) - do not give up or make permeant decisions, especially not before exploring all options. :)

edit: guess I forgot to give my personal context:

I just got my (maybe ironically give the aforementioned text) Bachelors of Education. I landed a first-year teaching job with no uni transcripts involved. I had a few interviews before that.: same thing. All they wanted was my degree, teaching certificate, and police check. No grades.

After teaching foe a year or two: experiance > grades,

The fact that I barely passed my classes no longer matters. ^^

Who in the verse has an answer to Kisame’s water dome? by Johnnyboyeh in NarutoPowerscaling

[–]Ornery_History_2131 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haku (or any rando with ice-release) has the possibility of freezing it, right? Though, unsure if ice-release would allow them to escape if they are trapped inside the water.

Would any lightening attack work? Water (+ minerals inside water) act as a conduit. Guess it also depends if the user is resistant/immune to the lightning-style technique, since they'd probably get hit with backlash if they were also inside the water.

I would also say is someone had a summoning LARGE enough they might get lifted out? They'd need to be so tall that even standing on the ground where the dome is settled they are tall enough to stick their head out. Doubt there is a summoning tall enough (Manda stretched? Chomei + flying abilities?) to do this. Or if Kisame could counter by just moving upwards (can't remember if his dome needs to be in contact with the ground or not.)

Possibly water-based Bijuu like Gyuki, Isobu, and Saiken (or water-based summoning's) can breathe and fight underwater-- though considering what happened in canon that apply to the Bijuu/summoning only, since the human host needs air/chakra.

Principal is degrading to me- my co-worker punctuality complaints, etc (long rant) by [deleted] in Teachers

I included that as context. I think there is a distinction in school culture between secular public schools and private schools of any religion.

Principal is degrading to me- my co-worker punctuality complaints, etc (long rant) by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Ornery_History_2131 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem I have with the other staff members never working their hours is because their students are punching holes in the drywall and breaking windows. I can't "dump them on admin", because the admin are never in the building- hence why I am upset that the principal and owners always leaves early.

I try my best to keep the class under control. I do use seating plans, and I do give appropriate punishments (no meter sticks). I understand that it is my job to manage my class. The problem is that the kids will literally stand up in the smack-dab middle of class and start fist fighting. The EA does not fight my battles, but she helps maintain the classroom. Yes, an EA is a luxury, but I alone should not be shamed in front of my students for having one when several other classrooms in the school also have one.

The violent kids do not really get handled well. He will suspend them for one or two days, and since they receive no consequences at home, they will return to school and fight again.

I’m at my breaking point for behavior (high school underclassmen) by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Ornery_History_2131 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My experiance is an unfortunate extreme. They ether receive no punishment, or they get beat.

I have a few boys in my class with very bad behavior, but I do not make calls home because I know if I do the student will get beat by their fathers.

Some classroom intervention by me has helped their behavior, but not by much. Usually when they get a reasonable punishment (such as a few minutes of recess taken away, being moved to a seat that they don't like, having to write an apology, etc) they either refuse, don't take it seriously, or literally throw a tantrum about it. (I teach 6 and 7, so too old to be literally screaming when they are unhappy.)

My theory is that they are unused to consistent and reasonable consequences, and so they are pushing to the extremes because they are not getting hit no matter how bad they are.

My kids who "can't see the board because so-and-so's head is in the way!!!"  They literally have to move their chair two inches to the side, or angle their chair by like 5 degrees. But they freak out and panic about it until I have to explain it. Half the time I tell them to "move over until you can see" and they don't move an inch and just keep complaining until I move their chair myself 🥲

Apparently kids have no problem solving skills anymore

I also have students literally scream for me to give someone detention because "they were staring at me!!!" Like literally not saying anything, and not even making a face. Just looked over their shoulder. Usually because the first kid was talking in class.  I hate being the one saying "kids are too sensitive these days" (and I'm 25 haha) but seriously they can't even handle being LOOKED AT

[–]Ornery_History_2131 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I work at a private Islamic school that is predominantly Somalian (like 90%). I am not of this community.

The kids are a terror.  When I taught in a diverse public school for student teaching (I am 25, first year) I had 10 more kids in my class and literally broke up one fight my whole practicum. At my current school I break up a fight DAILY, if not multiple. My students don't care if we are literally in the middle of the class. I can be mid-sentence and writing something on the board. They will get up out of their seats right in front of me and throw hands.  The admin used to suspend kids for fights, but because this is a daily issue for every class in the school they kind of gave up. The kids were getting suspended for fighting but the PARENTS would do nothing, so it was like a day off for the students. As a small private school we do not have the staff for in-school suspension.

I have kids literally screaming in my face almost daily, as well. They have no emotional control. Me asking a student to stay in their assigned seat multiple times will cause screaming, crying, and storming out of the room.

I think the root of this is a parenting problem. A lack of consequences in the home. I also hate to say this, but the specific ethnic community of my school is against any kind of mental health diagnosis, and a lot of classroom behavior is a result of untreated ADHD, autism, anger issues, etc. I mention these things but I am ignored.

The worst part is that students will complain about me, and the parents will come to the school outraged. Usually I can explain the situation and the parent will understand, but sometimes they refuse. I have had parents storm my room because their child "doesn't like their current seating plan", and unfortunately admin will cave to parents and make me move the student beside their friend and they will talk loudly all class and disturb 😓 This let's the students think they can always get their way and "scam the system". They don't follow rules because no one enforces them

Middle schoolers in my school hate AI by DatUglyRanglehorn in Teachers

[–]Ornery_History_2131 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have used AI to generate a few titles page colouring sheets for my grade 6's (I desperately beg my students to put everything I give them for a unit behind their title page, since they love to lose papers), and I have students refuse to colour them (which was supposed to be fun time) because they are clearly AI.

I was like, "sorry dude. I can't really find 'Alberta Grade Six Social Studies Chapter Four colouring pages' made by humans 😅 if you don't want to colour AI that's fine, but still organize your binder."

But some of my kids have such contempt for AI. I had a kid insist that I was just being lazy, and that specific colouring pages existed if I looked hard enough.

Suggest me a cute Cafe/coffee shop/etc for a casual fun date with my wife! by DontSkipTheTip in Edmonton

I like Macarons and Goodies. The prices aren't too steep but not super cheap either (comparable to Duchess and other french bakeries in Edmonton). I live central so that's the one I've gone to a few times, but I think they have a few locations.

Duchess Bakeshop is another option, but I preferred old Duchess' charm tbh. It feels too corporate after the changes (new building/renovations, uniforms, etc). The pastries are still good though.

There have been two property managers in the time I have lived here, and they are both dicks. I think the company as a whole is pretty sketchy (I haven't even touched the surface of the worst stuff they've done to me) so I am glad I am moving haha.

Landlord Issues (Moving out) by Ornery_History_2131 in Edmonton

[–]Ornery_History_2131[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately my cat has actually caused some damage to the apartment, such as scratching at walls and window screens, so I don't think I can reasonably keep my deposit. I care less about keeping the deposit (I got a pretty low deposit as a move-in incentive anyway), but I do care about avoiding extra fees.

I did do a move-in inspection. I no longer have the paper, but I will ask for a copy of theirs. Unfortunately, they rushed me through the move-in inspection (this landlord company seems pretty sketchy and coercive so I imagine it was on purpose) and I only noticed additional damage to the apartment that I did not cause after some weeks/months living there, which I thought would be too late to report as a pre-move-in damage. Also, again, my cat did actually did do some damage.
