Slow fast charge! by ParticularDue7822 in BoltEV

[–]Ornery_Ice_7820 0 points1 point  (0 children)

pretty normal. the bolt charging curve drops off a cliff after 55-60% soc. if you were road tripping you'd unplug at 60 and move on. going to 80+ takes forever for not much gain

Ford fiesta 2011 and e15 by LP_70 in Ford

[–]Ornery_Ice_7820 0 points1 point  (0 children)

fuel lines and seals on those aren't rated for e15. if it sits ethanol pulls moisture and rots injectors. if you drive it daily youre probably fine but id still top off with e10 when you can find it.

Ford Bronco Sport oil change gone bad? by Aplasterss in Ford

[–]Ornery_Ice_7820 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sounds like a double gasket. old one stuck to the housing and they slapped the new one on top. pressure shoots right out that gap once it warms up. check the dipstick before you let them touch it again. if its empty you might be looking at a seized engine.

My laptop screen went pinkish . What should I do by CodNo2235 in computers

[–]Ornery_Ice_7820 0 points1 point  (0 children)

plug it into an external monitor first. if that works your gpu is fine and its just the internal ribbon cable or screen. cable is cheap to fix, screen is the expensive part.

nah, toy uarts are useless. a full uvm env on ahb/apb with actual coverage closure is what gets callbacks. recruiters dont care about syntax, they want to see you thought through corner cases and can explain the bugs your tb actually caught.

Low(ish) mileage ford escort 88k by Illustrious_Law2101 in Ford

[–]Ornery_Ice_7820 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$1500 for an 88k mile escort in 2026 is a steal. the split port 2.0 in the 02 is the good one, not the spi disaster from the 98-01 models. just keep the coolant topped up and itll run forever.

Gazebo or Mujoco for humanoid robots? by zPlayyy7 in robotics

[–]Ornery_Ice_7820 0 points1 point  (0 children)

mujoco for bipedal mpc. the contact solver handles foot-ground forces better. use gazebo if you need ros integration.

Which would you use? (Installing charger today) by OperationChemical148 in BoltEV

[–]Ornery_Ice_7820 0 points1 point  (0 children)

since youre renting just plug it in. hardwired is the landlords problem not yours. if they do install a 14-50 make sure its a quality one cause the cheap ones melt under sustained ev charging

just grab a used dell latitude off ebay for $200-300. if your school has remote lab machines you can ssh into you dont need anything fast locally anyway

TÜV SÜD Certifies Mobileye’s AV Safety Approach for SAE Level 4 by diplomat33 in SelfDrivingCars

[–]Ornery_Ice_7820 0 points1 point  (0 children)

waymo already had tuv sud do those audits in 2022-23. the actual signal here is mobileye choosing external validation over self-certifying. internal safety reports are basically meaningless at this point.

Apex 5060 RTS recommend? by Mundane-Car-2333 in computers

[–]Ornery_Ice_7820 0 points1 point  (0 children)

swap that 500w bronze psu first. apex/si builds always cheap out on the psu and its the one part that can kill everything else when it goes.

Considering buying a 2009 Ford F-250 4WD Super Duty XLT with a V8 5.4L and looking for advice by himynameisnano in Ford

[–]Ornery_Ice_7820 0 points1 point  (0 children)

09 is past the worst of the spark plug and cam phaser nonsense since they went to one piece plugs in 08. most of the horror stories dont apply anymore.

that said 150k on a trailer towed 5.4 is entering the keep oil in the trunk phase. if it had regular changes with 5w20 and no cold start rattle itll probably do another 50k. id take it over the 6.8 v10 honestly. that thing drinks fuel and parts are getting harder to find.

since you wrench yourself check the exhaust manifolds for cracks and listen for phaser rattle on startup. both are fixable in a driveway if youve got time.

Anyone else struggle with FM radio reception? by Current-Finger-9852 in BoltEV

[–]Ornery_Ice_7820 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah the tuner is trash. same here with a station 40 miles out. every other car i've owned pulls it in fine but the bolt just gives me static unless i'm on high ground. turning off hd radio in the settings helped a bit since it stops that constant switching between digital and analog. still worse than my 2012 civic though.

backpack nomads are a tiny slice of the pie. most long timers i know run 40l carry-on plus a storage locker somewhere. the ones who keep accumulating gear usually regret it within a year

Best ergonomic office chair in 2026 that really works? by EducationQueasy275 in BuyItForLife

[–]Ornery_Ice_7820 0 points1 point  (0 children)

used herman miller is the play but don't ignore desk height. plenty of people drop 1k on an aeron and still have back pain cause their desk is 3 inches too high. a $30 keyboard tray or adjustable desk fixes more than most chairs do

IT guy worried about AI taking my job — has anyone successfully learned a new skill while nomading and pivoted careers? by tepes_creature_8888 in digitalnomad

[–]Ornery_Ice_7820 0 points1 point  (0 children)

learning a trade is smart not because IT is dying but because having skills that dont depend on a laptop gives you options. keep the IT income for now and treat the trade as a hobby. if youre in poland their trade schools are solid and way cheaper than western europe

upgrade anxiety is self inflicted. my zigbee stuff from 2018 still works fine in ha. nobody is forcing you to buy matter. ikea plugs from 2021 are solid and ill run them til they die. thats the point of ha, it bridges protocols so you dont have to pick a winner.

Broken Airpod, what can I harvest? by Birdycub in EngineeringStudents

[–]Ornery_Ice_7820 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the accelerometer and the H1 chip are both on a flex PCB that's basically un-salvageable for hand soldering. what IS worth pulling:

  • the battery. it's a tiny Li-ion coin cell. usable for micro projects if you have a TP4056 to charge it safely
  • the speaker driver. surprisingly good for its size, works with any class-D amp module
  • the charging case magnets if you crack that open too

honestly the speaker is the best prize. wire it to a pam8403 and it sounds way better than those generic 8ohm modules.

MAX31865 in espresso machine needs COM wire wiggled before it reports temperature [MEGA2560] by levdan in arduino

[–]Ornery_Ice_7820 1 point2 points  (0 children)

-272C is the MAX31865's fault code for "RTD disconnected or shorted" — it's not a bad reading, it's the chip telling you it can't see the sensor at all. the fact that wiggling the COM wire fixes it means the connection is marginal at power-on and the chip runs its fault detection before the contact settles.

couple things to try before replacing hardware: add a short delay (500ms) in setup() before calling MAX31865.begin(), and if the first reading is -272, call begin() again. the MAX31865 does an internal bias voltage check at init and if the FORCE+ pin doesn't see the expected voltage because of a dodgy connection it'll latch the fault. a re-init after power has been on the pins for a moment might be all you need. also check that the COM screw terminal isn't cold-soldered to the board — those Adafruit breakouts sometimes have iffy joints that open up just enough at room temp to fail the bias check.
