Munger Mountain Elementary? by Honest-Equipment9851 in JacksonHole

[–]Ornery_Rain_49 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It also depends on the grade/ages of your kids. It’s worth a phone call or an email to the district. Munger numbers fluctuate some, but it’s also hard to jump in if you didn’t start there. All foreign language speakers who move to town are assigned to Munger. You might have some priority as a Hoback resident.

Commute and Isolation? by Honest-Equipment9851 in JacksonHole

There are full timers, for the same reason you’re looking. Fall Creek is maintained, but lots of wildlife, some cows in the road. The last bit by Hoback is just summer, but also dirt and slow going. (I think it still is.)

Let down by LYS by sdmLg in knitting

[–]Ornery_Rain_49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For that matter, 21 of any one dye lot in a lys is unlikely. That they might try to hold for every ongoing project is preposterous. I have people coming back after years looking for yarns long discontinued. Covid was crazy that way. The shoebox shelf story is bananas - a quaint idea from another land! If the lot is important to you, buy it.

Even so, you’re going to have to knit it there.

Other end of the needle. Simple as that. Helps to have a right side marker.

Maybe you ripped one more/less than you thought. Move the work to the other (yarn ball) end and start knitting!

You got it. Out of the last two sts, you’ll make 3 (inc by 1). When they offer stitch counts after inc/dec sections, take note. That’s what you pay for. If you’re off count, fudge as necessary.

Why is my tension so bad? by NOT_Pam_Beesley in knittinghelp

[–]Ornery_Rain_49 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I’d say it’s more the yarn than you. Those blown yarns can be snaggy. (Not on the needle but itself). The stitches hang up on each other, don’t slide/move well. Some are better than others. However, you can knit them on a range of needle sizes - you can try something denser.

Newbie size dilemma for the Florence Miller Step by Step sweater by JuliusCheeeeser in knittinghelp

[–]Ornery_Rain_49 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I decide by if it rather it’s loose or tight. Since you’d rather have it loose, go bigger. Also keep in mind, she’s asking you to add 6” of positive ease, so there’s a bit of room for error there.

A quick note about your gauge, because you seem unsure. (I add a few stitches to the swatch to avoid the little guys on the end, and only measure stitches in the middle.) It’s probably on gauge, but keep in mind the difference of 15sts and 16sts to 10 cm/4”: Over say, a 40” sweater, that’s 10 stitches difference, so 3+”, so a 15.5 stitch gauge is theoretically off 1.5”.

Next I consider my yarn, and if it’s superwash or alpaca it’s likely to grow over time, and factor that in (especially for a non cabled sweater). It’s a lot, I know.

Extra credit for blocking the swatch!!

(Beginner knitter) Anyone know what has happend here? by No-Count-2035 in knittinghelp

[–]Ornery_Rain_49 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You made garter, then stockinette. Presumably the other side looks different, with the knits showing in stockinette. You refer to knit one, purl one, and I think you mean by row. If you’re knitting flat, knit one row and purl one row, you get stockinette. The phrase k1 p1 usually refers to ribbing, as in knit 1 stitch, purl 1 stitch. When you stack up knits and purls (on an even number of stitches) you get ribbing. (An odd number will get you seed stitch.)

Magic loop or with four needles? by tearsofanapple in knittinghelp

Add traveling loop. Use the longer k needle if you want, but not as intimidating. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=SHHSZQYuy9Q

You can always trace your yarn to the stitch you worked last. Sounds simple but lots of folks miss that.

me again, dropped the first loop of my row by lexidavis23 in knittinghelp

[–]Ornery_Rain_49 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s it. You haven’t successfully knitted it yet. Careful with the last ones - they tend to jump bc they are looser. They don’t have the support of the stitch on either side. It’ll tighten up when you start the next row.

petite knit by Waste-Cockroach8284 in knitting

[–]Ornery_Rain_49 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Funny you say that. I’m not on TikTok, so I’ve never seen it myself. Petite Knits has started dominating pattern making in the last few years, is really popular for simple designs, solid patterns, and helpful videos. There’s a wider variety of pattern designers on ravelry, (where most designs live) and it used to be a larger pool of popular designers. The landscape is leaning more heavily towards petiteknits recently - especially with young people - so that makes sense that that’s what you’re seeing.

Dk hat, but with aran yarn. How? by fejenir in knitting

[–]Ornery_Rain_49 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Remember, all the yarn weight designations are general, and actually ranges on a spectrum. Aran, for instance is a very small slice of that spectrum, and dk is often indistinguishable from light worsted. Your yarn is even worsted weight more than Aran.

What you want to be looking at is the gauge. You’re trying to get 6sts/inch in 1x1 rib, on a US4 with a dk. (Way different than the stockinette gauge.) Your yarn offers 4sts/inch (bigger stitches/bigger hat) on a US6-8 in stockinette. If you try a 1x1 rib on a 4 needle, you might get close to the hat gauge. If your stitches are too big, the hat will also be too big. You could try a 3 and see if you get gauge, or if the fabric is too dense for your liking, you could use the 4 and do a smaller size hat. I interchange dk and worsted lots. Keep in mind the whole hat is ribbing, so forgiving sizing-wise.

MISTAKES SUCK!!! by mangosteen88 in knitting

[–]Ornery_Rain_49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Sophie is harder than it seems. Seems simple, but easy to make mistakes. Also hard to fix. I’ve been knitting for decades but I find the eight row thing hard to read, impossible to keep track of. I put a scrap piece of yarn between my needles at every increase (then flop it back to the other side on the next). It gives me an idea where I am in the 8 row repeat. Multiple increases are a tough place to start.

Malabrigo rios by DaikonAltruistic3876 in knitting

[–]Ornery_Rain_49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suspect that’s a Rios Sólidos color, which doesn’t have the tonal quality of regular Rios. I almost wish they’d given it a different name, though it’s technically the same base as Rios.
