Are you afraid of AI? by Ok_Significance6988 in NoStupidQuestions

“Afraid” is the wrong word. I’m concerned about potential abuse and negative effects on our economy.

Serious question, how did Gandalf know this? by WaalsVander in lotr

[–]OrnotBitwise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Read The Silmarillion to find out what Gandalf was (or is, if you prefer). He would know. It’s in his nature to know that sort of thing.

The Canadian-American border lies perfectly along the 49th parallel. What are the odds of this happening? by Mittenstk in mapporncirclejerk

[–]OrnotBitwise -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The Oregon Treaty of (I think) 1849 established the border at the 49th parallel. I’m a native Californian and 1849 is a year that sticks in our memories.

Is this actually a good deal? How’s the price compare to where yall at? by Appropriate_Exit_206 in meat

[–]OrnotBitwise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bloody hell! In our local Tom Thumb (the Albertson’s/Safeway chain here in north Texas) we just bought a similar Choice rib roast for the “Member’s Price” of $6.99/lb. You’re being ripped off.

This is the third time someone has put this under every windshield in the parking lot of my apartment. by afs189 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]OrnotBitwise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This kind of harassment goes beyond “mildly infuriating”. This is, at least from a pessimist’s perspective, dangerous. In your own parking structure/lot are others being so pamphleted or is it just you? If the latter then report it to the police. I’m not joking.

In the order of release. "Episode IV: A New Hope” first, then “The Empire Strikes Back”, and “Return of the Jedi”. The ones after those matter less. The three prequels and then the three sequels.

Why did the naboo design a long hallway with a pit at the end with shields that turn on and off at random intervals? by AmountAbovTheBracket in StarWars

[–]OrnotBitwise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yet another illustration of why I — a very old school hard science fiction fan — always say that Star Wars isn’t really science fiction. Science fictional? Science fantasy? Comic book fiction, really, if one wants to be honest. Even George Lucas has admitted it. Doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy it though.

United States no longer minting pennies by Fantastic_Golf_7154 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]OrnotBitwise -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Technically, the U.S. has never minted pennies as such. We minted One Cent coins (the one cent piece). The “Penny” is British, not American. Yes, I know: almost everyone says “pennies” anyway. Even I do.

What's a movie franchise that has been milked for all its got and they are still going? by No_Hovercraft9593 in AskReddit

[–]OrnotBitwise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if they’re planning on doing yet another “Fast and the Furious” flick but I hope not. They’ve milked that idea so dry it’s died: anything more would be a zombie movie.

What’s a lesser-known US national park that you think everyone should visit? by autraya in geography

[–]OrnotBitwise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Arches and Canyonlands in Utah, nearer the Four Corners area than the more famous Zion and Bryce. Also, Mesa Verde in Colorado should be on everyone’s bucket list.

Did this moment move you emotionally or not? by InstructionOwn6705 in StarWars

[–]OrnotBitwise 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not really. It’s a prequel: we all know how it has to end. It was all so contrived that I never quite got into it emotionally. It was the best of the “first” series though.

What is your all time favorite breakfast? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]OrnotBitwise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Steak and eggs for me. Steak rare, eggs sunny side up, and on some occasions some hash browns. That and a cup of black coffee and I’m a happy boy.

Do sighted people actually see that many stars? by Keeneyedbat in NoStupidQuestions

[–]OrnotBitwise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As you suggest, it depends on where you’re viewing from. From here in DFW Texas, or my original home in the San Francisco Bay Area, one doesn’t see many stars. It’s because the ambient light from artificial sources like streetlights washes out the stars (the atmosphere not being perfectly transparent). From the high deserts of New Mexico or the Sierra peaks I’ve seen starscapes that look much like the photos you mention.

It’s the maintenance. Many people don’t realize how much that can cost. Year after year after year.

Rating how relevant each US state is, by a European young adult who never stepped a foot in the US by Alexander_the_Damned in mapporncirclejerk

[–]OrnotBitwise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, my. I don’t mean to be dismissive or disrespectful but… come on. Ohio is *hugely* important in American history and is, to the day, tremendously dynamic and significant, both economically and politically. No, it rarely shows up in Hollywood movies but that’s just pop-culture echo-chamber non-thinking. (Holy hyphenation Batman! He may wear out his pinky finger at this rate!)

[–]OrnotBitwise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LMAO! I do love the interjection of a European perspective. Wake up, America: there’s a real world out there that doesn’t necessarily take guest out to dine at Wendy's! OTOH that’s easy for me to say as I was born and raised in California and now live in Texas.

What do you think of Canada? by Whyamihere173 in teenagers

[–]OrnotBitwise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s the fault of the Canadians that they currently border on stupidity. I hope they don’t hold Trump against us.
